    Naturwall: active timber wall for renovation of existent buildings

    The renovation of old buildings is actually the challenge to cope with increased effort in order to reduce climate global change, channeling more investment and awareness in this sense, defining more experimentations and find innovative solutions. The difficulty of carrying out an intervention on the existing buildings necessarily arise from the lack of information on the existing structure and the lack of coordinated processes between the multidisciplinary skills involved, as well as a difficulty to optimize the process that would make it even more competitive on the renovation work instead on the new construction. Naturwall is an innovative energy saving system for existent buildings by using wood in multifunctional components able to mitigate the environmental effort in building management. The project meant to introduce an industrialized design method in the renovation of existing build environment that highlights opportunities gave by "off site" production and parametric design approach, without neglecting the aesthetical values and the possibility to change the architectural image of residential and non residential constructions.     Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2’s activation in transgenic mice fed with dosage of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids using in vivo bioluminescent imaging

    To counteract oxidative stress cells developed several mechanisms, including the transcription factor Nuclear Factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). The aim of the study was to evaluate the activation of Nrf2 in transgenic mice fed saturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids and the anti-inflammatory effect of estrogens on organism. Forty-eight ARE CRE OMO reporter mice were divided into 3 groups, consisting of 16 animals, based on presence/absence of estrogens (ovariectomized or sham female, OVX - SH; male, MA). Each group was further split in 4 subgroups of 4 animals each and fed different diets (7.5% lard, 7.5% tuna oil, 20.0 % lard and 20.0% tuna oil). Two times a week animals were anaesthetized and injected i.p. with 100”L luciferin 15 min before the imaging session. Using the Living Image Software, photon emission was mapped for selected body areas. On day 70, animals were sacrificed after a challenge with Sodium Arsenite. Specific organs were dissected and immediately subjected to ex vivo imaging session. MIXED and GLM procedures of SAS software were used for statistical analysis. Dietary treatments did not affect body weight and feed intake as well as Nrf2 expression in both pre- and post-challenge phases, with the exception of the abdominal region (P=0.031 pre-challenge); in this area, during the pre-challenge phase, OVX showed lower Nrf2 activation (P<0.001). Ex vivo results outlined a significant effect of the challenge on all the considered organs (P<0.001), while OVX subjects had higher Nrf2 expression on urinary bladder and kidney (P<0.05) and high fat diet increased Nrf2 in urinary bladder (P<0.05). The present trial shows how saturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids supplementation in the diet do not exert significant effects on oxidative stress in mice, but confirms the protective role of estrogens under physiological condition

    Metal N,N-dialkylcarbamates as easily available catalytic precursors for the carbon dioxide/propylene oxide coupling under ambient conditions

    A series of previously reported homoleptic and non-homoleptic N,N-dialkylcarbamates of a range of non precious metals and N,N-dialkylcarbamate of Al(III) were investigated as easily available and inexpensive catalysts in the solventless synthesis of propylene carbonate (PC) from propylene oxide (PO) and CO2. By operating at atmospheric CO2 pressure at ambient temperature, excellent results were achieved using Ti(O2CNEt2)4, Al(O2CNR2)3 (R = Et, iPr), Cu(O2CNEt2)2 and Sn(O2CNEt2)4, in combination with NBu4X (X = Br or Cl) as a co-catalyst. The reactions of MCl2(O2CNEt2)2 (M = Ti, Zr) with amorphous silica were straightforward through partial release of both chlorido and carbamato ligands, and readily afforded solid materials which were characterized by ICP-OES and EDS analyses, coupled to SEM. These heterogeneous catalytic systems revealed less efficient than the homogeneous counterparts

    A direct kinematical derivation of the relativistic Sagnac effect for light or matter beams

    The Sagnac time delay and the corresponding Sagnac phase shift, for relativistic matter and electromagnetic beams counter-propagating in a rotating interferometer, are deduced on the ground of relativistic kinematics. This purely kinematical approach allows to explain the ''universality'' of the effect, namely the fact that the Sagnac time difference does not depend on the physical nature of the interfering beams.     Horizontal transmission of the symbiotic bacterium Asaia sp. in the leafhopper Scaphoideus titanus Ball (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bacteria of the genus <it>Asaia</it> have been recently recognized as secondary symbionts of different sugar-feeding insects, including the leafhopper <it>Scaphoideus titanus</it>, vector of Flavescence dorĂ©e phytoplasmas. <it>Asaia</it> has been shown to be localized in <it>S. titanus</it> gut, salivary glands and gonoducts and to be maternally transmitted to the progeny by an egg smearing mechanism. It is currently not known whether <it>Asaia</it> in <it>S. titanus</it> is transmitted by additional routes. We performed a study to evaluate if <it>Asaia</it> infection is capable of horizontal transmission <it>via</it> co-feeding and venereal routes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A Gfp-tagged strain of <it>Asaia</it> was provided to <it>S. titanus</it> individuals to trace the transmission pathways of the symbiotic bacterium. Co-feeding trials showed a regular transfer of bacterial cells from donors to recipients, with a peak of frequency after 72 hours of exposure, and with concentrations of the administrated strain growing over time. Venereal transmission experiments were first carried out using infected males paired with uninfected females. In this case, female individuals acquired Gfp-labelled <it>Asaia</it>, with highest infection rates 72-96 hours after mating and with increasing abundance of the tagged symbiont over time. When crosses between infected females and uninfected males were conducted, the occurrence of “female to male” transmission was observed, even though the transfer occurred unevenly.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The data presented demonstrate that the acetic acid bacterial symbiont <it>Asaia</it> is horizontally transmitted among <it>S</it>. <it>titanus</it> individuals both by co-feeding and venereal transmission, providing one of the few direct demonstrations of such a symbiotic transfer in Hemiptera. This study contributes to the understanding of the bacterial ecology in the insect host, and indicates that <it>Asaia</it> evolved multiple pathways for the colonization of <it>S</it>. <it>titanus</it> body.</p

    Design, fabrication and characterization of piezoelectric cantilever MEMS for underwater application

    This work shows a preliminary microfabrication route for a novel directional hydrophone based on a cross-shaped design of piezoelectric cantilevers. A thin layer of aluminum nitride (AlN) using Molybdenum (Mo) thin film as electrodes will be exploited as piezoelectric functional layer for the microfabrication of a cantilever-based ultrasonic micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) hydrophone. A parameterized simulation based on length of these cantilevers between 100 and 1000 ÎŒm allowed to set the first resonant mode between 20 kHz and 200 kHz, the desired underwater ultrasonic acoustic range. The microsystem was designed with cantilevers facing each other in a cross configuration in order to have novel MEMS hydrophone with an omnidirectional response. In order to investigate the first resonance frequency mode and displacement measurements, a Laser Doppler Vibrometer was used and good agreement between simulations and experimental results was achieved. Responsivity and directionality measurements of the piezoelectric MEMS cantilevers were performed in water. Maximum sensitivity up to −153 dB with omnidirectional directivity pattern was achieved by fabricated MEMS sensor

    Combining NLP Approaches for Rule Extraction from Legal Documents

    International audienceLegal texts express conditions in natural language describing what is permitted, forbidden or mandatory in the context they regulate. Despite the numerous approaches tackling the problem of moving from a natural language legal text to the respective set of machine-readable conditions, results are still unsatisfiable and it remains a major open challenge. In this paper, we propose a preliminary approach which combines different Natural Language Processing techniques towards the extraction of rules from legal documents. More precisely, we combine the linguistic information provided by WordNet together with a syntax-based extraction of rules from legal texts, and a logic-based extraction of dependencies between chunks of such texts. Such a combined approach leads to a powerful solution towards the extraction of machine-readable rules from legal documents.
