    Identification of γ-rays sources with the AMS-02 electromagnetic calorimeter

    The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer AMS-02 is a particle physics experiment designed to operate for a long time in space. It was installed on the International Space Station ISS in May 2011 and its purpose is to obtain accurate and high-statistics measurements of cosmic rays spectra and composition up to TeV energies, searching for primordial Anti-Matter and probing the nature of Dark Matter. AMS-02 is mainly conceived as a charged-particle detector, but the unique features of its electromagnetic calorimeter also allow the identification of γ-rays. ECAL has an excellent energy resolution and a high granularity that makes possible the reconstruction of the direction of the incoming particle with an unprecedent angular resolution for a calorimeter.     Evaluation of Contrast Sensitivity, Chromatic Vision, and Reading Ability in Patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma

    Purpose. To compare contrast sensitivity, acquired color vision deficiency, and reading ability in patients with glaucoma at different stages of the disease and to establish correlations between visual field parameters and visual function scores. Methods. This prospective cross-sectional study included 121 glaucoma patients. Subjects with a diagnosis of chronic open angle glaucoma were recruited and classified according to Hodapp-Parrish-Anderson criteria. Patients with severe visual field defects were excluded because they were older, which could bias the interpretation of visual function tests. Contrast sensitivity was measured using the Pelli-Robson Chart and the CSV1000E test. Chromatic vision was evaluated using the Farnsworth-panel D15 and the L''Anthony D15 tests of Vision Color Recorder software. Reading ability was measured using Radner-Vissum test. Results. Contrast sensitivity (with photopic and mesopic luminance with glare) differed significantly between patients with early and moderate visual field defects (p < 0.05). Reading ability scores and results of the chromatic vision tests did not differ significantly between the two groups. Significant and moderate Spearman correlations between visual field indexes and contrast sensitivity tests were detected. Conclusions. Contrast sensitivity was significantly worse in patients with moderate glaucoma compared to those with early-stage glaucoma. Evaluation of visual function in clinical practice provides important information to address a glaucoma patient''s vision complaints

    Laparoscopic Ovariectomy in Standing Mule Mares

    Mules are hybrids bred from the mating of a jack donkey and a horse mare, known for their strength and resistance and still used to work in agriculture. Although they have been for long considered sterile, evidence of estrus cycle has been demonstrated together with abnormal behavior related to ovarian activity. In this study, a bilateral standing laparoscopic ovariectomy technique using the LigaSure technology was applied in 10 mare mules for treating unwanted behavioral patterns. The technique was effectively performed on these animals avoiding the risk of general anesthesia, and the use of the LigaSure technology allowed good hemostasis and reduced surgical time.     Bichromatic laser emission from dipyrromethene dyes incorporated into solid polymeric media

    9 pages, 9 figures.Bichromatic laser emission from dipyrromethene-based solid-state dye lasers is reported. The dependence of this dual emission on different factors and its origin and causes are discussed in the light of different models proposed in the literature. Our experimental results indicate that the long-wavelength emission can be explained in terms of reabsorption/reemission effects and inhomogeneous broadening of the S0-S1 transition. The short-wavelength emission corresponds to the usual S0-S1 transition and dominates at low dye concentration.This work was supported by Project Nos.     Photophysical and laser emission studies of 8-polyphenylene-substituted BODIPY dyes in liquid solution and in solid polymeric matrices

    In our search for efficient and photostable laser dyes, four new dyes with the basic structure of the commercial BODIPY laser dye PM567, with either an 8-diphenylene or an 8-p-triphenylene group, both substituted at the terminal polyphenylene position with an acetoxymethyl (dyes P2Ar1Ac and P3Ar1Ac, respectively) or a methacryloyloxymethyl group (dyes P2Ar1MA and P3Ar1MA, respectively), have been synthesized. The photophysical and lasing properties of the dyes have been studied both dissolved in liquid solvents (acetoxymethyl dyes) and incorporated into solid polymeric matrices, in the latter case as solutions (acetoxymethyl dyes) or as copolymers with methyl methacrylate (methacryloyloxymethyl dyes). In liquid solution, the photophysics of P2Ar1Ac and P3Ar1Ac is scarcely affected by the number (two or three) of p-phenylene units. Quantum mechanical calculations reveal that the p-phenylene units in these dyes are twisted ca. 37◦ each other, an that the first 8-p-phenylene group stands nearly perpendicular to the aromatic BODIPY plane, resulting in electronic decoupling of the two chromophores. P2Ar1Ac exhibits a somewhat lower photodegradation quantum yield under UV and visible irradiation, if compared with P3Ar1Ac or with PM567, likely because of its also lower rate constant for the reaction with in situ-generated singlet molecular oxygen. Both acetoxymethyl dyes emit laser radiation in solution in all the solvents tried, under transversal pumping at 532 nm. In ethyl acetate, with a dye concentration of 0.80 × 10−3 M, laser efficiencies as high as 80% have been observed. When the 8-polyphenylene dyes were incorporated into solid poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrices, as solutions or as copolymers, the fluorescence emission increased with respect to that of the parent PM567 dye dissolved in the same matrix, and lasing efficiencies in the range 18–31% were obtained, with good photostability. The dye P2Ar1Ac dissolved in PMMA was found to exhibit the best overall laser behavior, with a good balance between efficiency and photostability.This work was supported by Project MAT2004-04643-C03-01 of the Spanish CICYT.     SVCEval-RA: an evaluation framework for adaptive scalable video streaming

    [EN] Multimedia content adaption strategies are becoming increasingly important for effective video streaming over the actual heterogeneous networks. Thus, evaluation frameworks for adaptive video play an important role in the designing and deploying process of adaptive multimedia streaming systems. This paper describes a novel simulation framework for rate-adaptive video transmission using the Scalable Video Coding standard (H.264/SVC). Our approach uses feedback information about the available bandwidth to allow the video source to select the most suitable combination of SVC layers for the transmission of a video sequence. The proposed solution has been integrated into the network simulator NS-2 in order to support realistic network simulations. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed solution we perform a simulation study where a video sequence was transmitted over a three network scenarios. The experimental results show that the Adaptive SVC scheme implemented in our framework provides an efficient alternative that helps to avoid an increase in the network congestion in resource-constrained networks.     RhoE Deficiency Produces Postnatal Lethality, Profound Motor Deficits and Neurodevelopmental Delay in Mice

    Rnd proteins are a subfamily of Rho GTPases involved in the control of actin cytoskeleton dynamics and other cell functions such as motility, proliferation and survival. Unlike other members of the Rho family, Rnd proteins lack GTPase activity and therefore remain constitutively active. We have recently described that RhoE/Rnd3 is expressed in the Central Nervous System and that it has a role in promoting neurite formation. Despite their possible relevance during development, the role of Rnd proteins in vivo is not known. To get insight into the in vivo function of RhoE we have generated mice lacking RhoE expression by an exon trapping cassette. RhoE null mice (RhoE gt/gt) are smaller at birth, display growth retardation and early postnatal death since only half of RhoE gt/gt mice survive beyond postnatal day (PD) 15 and 100% are dead by PD 29. RhoE gt/gt mice show an abnormal body position with profound motor impairment and impaired performance in most neurobehavioral tests. Null mutant mice are hypoactive, show an immature locomotor pattern and display a significant delay in the appearance of the hindlimb mature responses. Moreover, they perform worse than the control littermates in the wire suspension, vertical climbing and clinging, righting reflex and negative geotaxis tests. Also, RhoE ablation results in a delay of neuromuscular maturation and in a reduction in the number of spinal motor neurons. Finally, RhoE gt/gt mice lack the common peroneal nerve and, consequently, show a complete atrophy of the target muscles. This is the first model to study the in vivo functions of a member of the Rnd subfamily of proteins, revealing the important role of Rnd3/RhoE in the normal development and suggesting the possible involvement of this protein in neurological disorders
