    Influence of the particle shape on the equilibrium morphologies of supracolloidal magnetic filaments

    We investigate the equilibrium morphologies of linear and ring-shaped magnetic filaments made from crosslinked ferromagnetic spherical or ellipsoidal colloidal particles. Using Langevin dynamics simulations, we calculate the radius of gyration and total magnetic moment of a single filament at zero field and different temperatures, analyzing the influence of the particles shape, the strength of their magnetic moment and the filament length. Our results show that, among such parameters, the shape of the particles has the strongest qualitative impact on the equilibrium behavior of the filaments

    SYMPA, a dedicated instrument for Jovian Seismology. II. Real performance and first results

    Context. Due to its great mass and its rapid formation, Jupiter has played a crucial role in shaping the Solar System. The knowledge of its internal structure would strongly constrain the solar system formation mechanism. Seismology is the most efficient way to probe directly the internal structure of giant planets. Aims. SYMPA is the first instrument dedicated to the observations of free oscillations of Jupiter. Principles and theoretical performance have been presented in paper I. This second paper describes the data processing method, the real instrumental performance and presents the first results of a Jovian observation run, lead in 2005 at Teide Observatory. Methods. SYMPA is a Fourier transform spectrometer which works at fixed optical path difference. It produces Doppler shift maps of the observed object. Velocity amplitude of Jupiter's oscillations is expected below 60 cm/s. Results Despite light technical defects, the instrument demonstrated to work correctly, being limited only by photon noise, after a careful analysis. A noise level of about 12 cm/s has been reached on a 10-night observation run, with 21 % duty cycle, which is 5 time better than previous similar observations. However, no signal from Jupiter is clearly highlighted.Comment: 13 pages, 26 figure

    Novel antibodies against RCD-8 as a tool to study processing bodies

    Aim. To develop the model system for processing bodies (PBs) state monitoring and accomplish it in the future as a possible read-out of mTOR activity in mammalian cells. Methods. In course of this study we raised polyclonal antibodies against one of the PBs scaffold proteins – RCD-8 and employed cell imaging technique. Results. It has been shown that the obtained antibodies recognize the intracellular structures, namely PBs. The detected protein co-localized with known marker of PBs – DCP1a, and partly with marker of SGs – CPEB. Conclusions. Based on changes of PBs number and size in cells after exposure to known inductors or inhibitors of PB formation we prove the specificity of generated antibodies and possibility of their application for studies on the processing bodies dynamics controlled by mTOR-dependent signalin

    Small innovative business development experience

    The article deals with the study of the experience and impact of establishing micro, small and medium-sized businesses, including innovative enterprises, in developed countries of Europe, the USA, and Russia, their development dynamics, as well as tools ensuring government regulation of their effective functioning. In Russia, the right to establish small innovative enterprises was granted by Federal Law No. 217-FZ dated August 2, 2009. The article provides quantitative statistics of the accounting of small innovative enterprises operating in the scientific and educational sector of Russia’s economy and the economic indicators of their activities, obtained based on monitoring results. The article also analyzes the US legislation in the innovation field. The research allowed us to come to the following key conclusions: Micro, small, and medium-sized businesses play an important role in the European and American economies, being the most important source of innovation and new jobs. In Russia, further development of a mechanism for commercialization of intellectual results requires improvement in terms of harmonization with international rules. The foreign legislative experience with respect to micro, small and medium-sized businesses is of particular interest for the improvement of the regulatory framework that would ensure the effective operation of small innovative enterprises in Russia.peer-reviewe

    Planet Consumption and Stellar Metallicity Enhancements

    The evolution of a giant planet within the stellar envelope of a main-sequence star is investigated as a possible mechanism for enhancing the stellar metallicities of the parent stars of extrasolar planetary systems. Three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of a planet subject to impacting stellar matter indicate that the envelope of a Jupiter-like giant planet can be completely stripped in the outer stellar convection zone of a solar-mass star. In contrast, Jupiter-like and less massive Saturn-like giant planets are able to survive through the base of the convection zone of a 1.22 solar-mass star. Although strongly dependent on details of planetary interior models, partial or total dissolution of giant planets can result in significant enhancements in the metallicity of host stars with masses between about 1.0 and 1.3 solar masses. The implications of these results with regard to planetary orbital migration are briefly discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, accepted for ApJ Letter
