Single-Photon Observables and Preparation Uncertainty Relations
We propose a procedure for defining all single-photon observables in terms of
Positive-Operator Valued Measures (POVMs), in particular spin and position. We
identify the suppression of -helicity photon states as a projection from an
extended Hilbert space onto the photon Hilbert space. We show that all
single-photon observables are in general described by POVMs, obtained by
applying this projection to opportune Projection-Valued Measures (PVMs),
defined on the extended Hilbert space. The POVMs associated to momentum and
helicity reduce to PVMs, unlike those associated to position and spin, this
fact reflecting the intrinsic unsharpness of these observables. We finally
extensively study the preparation uncertainty relations for position and
momentum and the probability distribution of spin, exploring single photon

GRBs with optical afterglow and known redshift: a statistical study
We present a correlation between two intrinsic parameters of GRB optical
afterglows. These are the isotropic luminosity at the maximum of the light
curve (Lpeak) and the time-integrated isotropic energy (Eiso) radiated after
the observed maximum. We test the correlation between the logarithms of (Eiso)
and (Lpeak) and finally we value the effect of the different samples of GRBs in

Transient increases in intracellular calcium and reactive oxygen species levels in TCam-2 cells exposed to microgravity
The effects of microgravity on functions of the human body are well described, including alterations in the male and female reproductive systems. In the present study, TCam-2 cells, which are considered a good model of mitotically active male germ cells, were used to investigate intracellular signalling and cell metabolism during exposure to simulated microgravity, a condition that affects cell shape and cytoskeletal architecture. After a 24 hour exposure to simulated microgravity, TCam-2 cells showed 1) a decreased proliferation rate and a delay in cell cycle progression, 2) increased anaerobic metabolism accompanied by increased levels of intracellular Ca(2+), reactive oxygen species and superoxide anion and modifications in mitochondrial morphology. Interestingly, all these events were transient and were no longer evident after 48 hours of exposure. The presence of antioxidants prevented not only the effects described above but also the modifications in cytoskeletal architecture and the activation of the autophagy process induced by simulated microgravity. In conclusion, in the TCam-2 cell model, simulated microgravity activated the oxidative machinery, triggering transient macroscopic cell events, such as a reduction in the proliferation rate, changes in cytoskeleton-driven shape and autophagy activation
Metal abundances in extremely distant Galactic old open clusters. II. Berkeley 22 and Berkeley 66
We report on high resolution spectroscopy of four giant stars in the Galactic
old open clusters Berkeley~22 and Berkeley~66 obtained with HIRES at the Keck
telescope. We find that and for
Berkeley~22 and Berkeley~66, respectively. Based on these data, we first revise
the fundamental parameters of the clusters, and then discuss them in the
context of the Galactic disk radial abundance gradient. We found that both
clusters nicely obey the most updated estimate of the slope of the gradient

High resolution infrared spectra of bulge globular clusters: Liller~1 and NGC 6553
Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained echelle spectra
covering the range 1.5-1.8um for 2 of the brightest giants in Liller 1 and NGC
6553, old metal rich globular clusters in the Galactic bulge. We use spectrum
synthesis for the abundance analysis, and find [Fe/H]=-0.3 +/- 0.2 and
[O/H]=+0.3 +/- 0.2 dex. The composition of the clusters is similar to that of
field stars in the bulge and is consistent with a sceanrio in which the
clusters formed early, with rapid enrichment. We have dificulty achieveing a
good fit to the spectrum of NGC 6553 using either the low or the high values
recently reported in the literature, unless unusually large, or no
alpha-element enhancements are adopted, respectively.Comment: To appear in the Astronomical Journal, March 200
The Nature of the Halo Population of NGC 5128 Resolved with NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope
We present the first infrared color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for the halo of a
giant elliptical galaxy. The CMD for the stars in the halo of NGC 5128
(Centaurus A) was constructed from HST NICMOS observations of the WFPC2 CHIP-3
field of Soria et al. (1996) to a 50% completeness magnitude limit of
[F160W]=23.8. This field is located at a distance of 08'50" (~9 kpc) south of
the center of the galaxy. The luminosity function (LF) shows a marked
discontinuity at [F160W]=20.0. This is 1-2 mag above the tip of the red giant
branch (TRGB) expected for an old population (~12 Gyr) at the distance modulus
of NGC 5128. We propose that the majority of stars above the TRGB have
intermediate ages (~2 Gyr), in agreement with the WFPC2 observations of Soria
et al. (1996). Five stars with magnitudes brighter than the LF discontinuity
are most probably due to Galactic contamination. The weighted average of the
mean giant branch color above our 50% completeness limit is
[F110W]-[F160W]=1.22+-0.08 with a dispersion of 0.19 mag. From our
artificial-star experiments we determine that the observed spread in color is
real, suggesting a real spread in metallicity. We estimate the lower and upper
bounds of the stellar metallicity range by comparisons with observations of
Galactic star clusters and theoretical isochrones. Assuming an old population,
we find that, in the halo field of NGC 5128 we surveyed, stars have
metallicities ranging from roughly 1% of solar at the blue end of the color
spread to roughly solar at the red end, with a mean of [Fe/H]=-0.76 and a

Bridging the gap through Rényi divergences
The work performed on or extracted from a nonautonomous quantum system described by means of a two-point projective-measurement approach is a stochastic variable. We show that the cumulant generating function of work can be recast in the form of quantum Rényi-α divergences, and by exploiting the convexity of this cumulant generating function, derive a single-parameter family of bounds for the first moment of work. Higher order moments of work can also be obtained from this result. In this way, we establish a link between quantum work statistics in stochastic approaches and resource theories for quantum thermodynamics, a theory in which Rényi-α divergences take a central role. To explore this connection further, we consider an extended framework involving a control switch and an auxiliary battery, which is instrumental to reconstructing the work statistics of the system. We compare and discuss our bounds on the work distribution to findings on deterministic work studied in resource-theoretic settings
An Abundance Analysis for Five Red Horizontal Branch Stars in the Extremely Metal Rich Globular Cluster NGC 6553
We provide a high dispersion line-by-line abundance analysis of five red HB
stars in the extremely metal rich galactic globular cluster NGC 6553. These red
HB stars are significantly hotter than the very cool stars near the tip of the
giant branch in such a metal rich globular cluster and hence their spectra are
much more amenable to an abundance analysis than would be the case for red
giants.
We find that the mean [Fe/H] for NGC 6553 is -0.16 dex, comparable to the
mean abundance in the galactic bulge found by McWilliam & Rich (1994) and
considerably higher than that obtained from an analysis of two red giants in
this cluster by Barbuy etal (1999). The relative abundance for the best
determined alpha process element (Ca) indicates an excess of alpha process
elements of about a factor of two. The metallicity of NGC 6553 reaches the
