As ever, it is a pleasure to work with IMSA\u27s alumni, hear their reflections about how IMSA helped them become who they are today, share their joy as they marry and start their families, and recognize their academic, professional and service contributions

The Effect of Team Sports On Mental Health In Adolescents

    Get PDF
There is research that shows the impact of physical activity and sport on the health of individuals participating. However, there is an area of research that is lacking regards to the impact of team sports on mental health, specifically amongst youth. Therefore, the purpose of this synthesis was to review the literature on the effects of team sports on mental health in youth and adolescents. Research has shown that there is a positive correlation between participation in a team sport and overall mental health in youth. Despite the amount of evidence, there still needs to be additional research conducted

Searching for the secrets in the heart of the atom, or in the genetic code that makes each of us unique, IMSA\u27s African-American and Hispanic alumni are extending the frontiers of science. They are achieving and contributing in many fields, engineering Illinois products, researching disease, teaching Illinois students, and improving Illinois technology. The vignettes give an extended look at several alumni, and the snapshots give a glimpse of more. Here our underrepresented alumni tell how IMSA prepared them for academic and personal life, and gave them opportunities to develop tools for success. Series Editor Cathy Veal, Vice President for Advancement, had the concept and excellent counsel to bring this project to fruition. Her knowledge and insight were invaluable. Jean Bigger of the Furnas Information Resource Center created title, concept and montage, and with Angela Richardson, provided day-to-day consulting. Thank you for information to Britta McKenna, Juan Bustamante and Kathleen Long of the Office of Advancement; Keith Mcintosh of Student Life; Principal Eric McLaren; Dr. Steve Cordogan, Jill Mosshamer and Jay Thomas of the Office of Research and Evaluation; Dr. LuAnn Smith, Babs Cleary, and Joe Prieto of College and Academic Counseling; and Dr. Peggy Connolly of the Mentorship Office. Thanks most of all to the alumni who made the work a pleasure. This work was compiled from the results of the IMSA Alumni Survey by the Alumni Office, records in the IMSA Archives, personal communications, phone and email interviews. I am proud and happy to help showcase this sampling of the achievements of our African-American and Hispanic alumni, and look forward to their future contributions

Relationship Between Perceived Contribution, Professional Respect, and Employee Engagement

    Get PDF
Disengaged employees are a threat to a company\u27s survival in a highly competitive world. Despite employee engagement benefits, the mediation of interactions between leaders and followers and the specific drivers of engagement remain poorly understood. This correlational study was grounded on leader member exchange (LMX) theory and examined the relationship between 2 dimensions of LMX (perceived contribution and professional respect) and employee engagement. In this study, 68 manufacturing employees from the southern region of the United States responded to 2 surveys to measure the LMX dimensions and the level of employee engagement. Using multiple regression analysis, the existence of a positive correlation, p \u3c .001 and R2= .277, was demonstrated, which explained 28% of the variation in engagement. This research may serve as a roadmap for studying additional variables and providing workable tools for developing strategies to improve engagement in the workplace. The results of this study might contribute to positive social change by helping managers develop strategies to engage employees and reduce turnover, by improving the sense of stability for employees and their families, and by helping companies become more competitive and generate new jobs

The IMSA Archives, housed in the Leto M. Furnas Information Resource Center, serves to collect and preserve materials relating to the history and ethos of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The Archives includes both special and general collections with materials about IMSA’s establishment, led by Dr. Leon Lederman and Governor James Thompson. There are materials about the Academy\u27s opening in the fall of 1986 and its development since, as well as about its ideas and programs and how they evolved. We have sample curricula, presidential speeches, samples of student work, as well as material about and from partnership programs for educators and schools. We have both student and institutional publications and we have a great deal of iconographic material ranging from posters to snapshots. All of the materials illuminate the lives of IMSA’s students, alumni/ae, faculty and staff on campus and out in the wide, wide world

The land takes is a major environmental challenge, specifically for biodiversity and the degradation and fragmentation of ecosystems. The most used tools to control it are the design of public policies and spatial planning. Although land take has serious effects in Latin America, little is known about the control mechanisms of land take in this region. This paper evaluates the land take control mechanisms implemented by the spatial planning plans of Buenos Aires (Argentina), Bogota (Colombia) and Lima (Peru). The evaluation was carried out through a content analysis based on three variables, the frequency of the terms related to land take control, the consistency of their inclusion in the plans, and the consistency found between the strategic documents and the regulatory documents. The findings reveal that the land take does not emerge as important concerns compared to the objectives of the plans. The main strategies to control land take in the three cities were the programs for a more compact city, land zoning and the imposition of economic charges on new urban projects. It was found that Bogotá is the city that has the most complementary programs for the control of land take, while Buenos Aires is the city that shows the least complementary strategies. It was established that the main trade offs of land take are the demographic increase and the economic dynamics of each city, but none of the cities analyzed have programs to prevent these causes.
