    Accretion and Preservation of D-rich Organic Particles in Carbonaceous Chondrites: Evidence for Important Transport in the Early Solar System Nebula

    We have acquired NanoSIMS images of the matrices of CI, CM, and CR carbonaceous chondrites to study, in situ, the organic matter trapped during the formation of their parent bodies. D/H ratio images reveal the occurrence of D-rich hot spots, constituting isolated organic particles. Not all the organic particles are D-rich hot spots, indicating that at least two kinds of organic particles have been accreted in the parent bodies. Ratio profiles through D-rich hot spots indicate that no significant self-diffusion of deuterium occurs between the D-rich organic matter and the depleted hydrous minerals that are surrounding them. This is not the result of a physical shielding by any constituent of the chondrites. Ab initio calculations indicate that it cannot be explained by isotopic equilibrium. Then it appears that the organic matter that is extremely enriched in D does not exchange with the hydrous minerals, or this exchange is so slow that it is not significant over the 4.5 billion year history on the parent body. If we consider that the D-rich hot spots are the result of an exposure to intense irradiation, then it appears that carbonaceous chondrites accreted organic particles that have been brought to different regions of the solar nebula. This is likely the result of important radial and vertical transport in the early solar system

    Outsourcing CO2 within China

    Recent studies have shown that the high standard of living enjoyed by people in the richest countries often comes at the expense of CO2 emissions produced with technologies of low efficiency in less affluent, developing countries. Less apparent is that this relationship between developed and developing can exist within a single country’s borders, with rich regions consuming and exporting high-value goods and services that depend upon production of low-cost and emission-intensive goods and services from poorer regions in the same country. As the world’s largest emitter of CO2, China is a prominent and important example, struggling to balance rapid economic growth and environmental sustainability across provinces that are in very different stages of development. In this study, we track CO2 emissions embodied in products traded among Chinese provinces and internationally. We find that 57% of China’s emissions are related to goods that are consumed outside of the province where they are produced. For instance, up to 80% of the emissions related to goods consumed in the highly developed coastal provinces are imported from less developed provinces in central and western China where many low–value-added but high–carbon-intensive goods are produced. Without policy attention to this sort of interprovincial carbon leakage, the less developed provinces will struggle to meet their emissions intensity targets, whereas the more developed provinces might achieve their own targets by further outsourcing. Consumption-based accounting of emissions can thus inform effective and equitable climate policy within China

    Which Strategy Maximizes the Innovation Output of Firms in China: Using a Control or an Entrepreneurial Sphere?

    Innovation is a key stimulus for firms’ survival and growth. However, many of Chinese firms fail to make it due to the lack of adequate financial resources. Previous studies have been deeply investigated the relationships between financial resources and firms’ innovation performance. This paper extends such stream of the literature by focusing on a vital question for entrepreneurs: how to maximize innovation output under resource constraints. Based on an extensive dataset collected at Zhongguancun Science Park (ZSP), Beijing, China, over the period 2011-2014, this paper discusses whether entrepreneurs should pursue extra public funding (control sphere). Besides, this paper also provides empirical evidence for entrepreneurs to make proper choices about resource allocation (entrepreneurial sphere). This paper hypothesizes that enterprises allocating resources by using the entrepreneurial sphere, rather than the control sphere, can advance innovation output. To test our hypothesis, this paper adopts a dynamic panel model estimated by a bootstrap-based bias correction procedure. We find that, in advancing innovative performance, the entrepreneurial sphere is more effective than control. Indeed, at the overall level, the crowding out effect merely offsets the additionality effect when enterprises pursue extra public funding. Therefore, the control sphere does not play an essential role in advancing innovation performance. Thus, extra efforts in that direction will turn out to be in vain. Consequently, as a policy implication we claim that entrepreneurs should spend more time and energy on productive activities rather than lobbying and rent-seeking. In addition, managers should allocate resources properly for internal knowledge creation, external knowledge absorption and S&T activities

    Neutron-rich Chromium Isotope Anomalies in Supernova Nanoparticles

    Neutron-rich isotopes with masses near that of iron are produced in Type Ia and II supernovae (SNeIa and SNeII). Traces of such nucleosynthesis are found in primitive meteorites in the form of variations in the isotopic abundance of ^(54)Cr, the most neutron-rich stable isotope of chromium. The hosts of these isotopic anomalies must be presolar grains that condensed in the outflows of SNe, offering the opportunity to study the nucleosynthesis of iron-peak nuclei in ways that complement spectroscopic observations and can inform models of stellar evolution. However, despite almost two decades of extensive search, the carrier of ^(54)Cr anomalies is still unknown, presumably because it is fine grained and is chemically labile. Here, we identify in the primitive meteorite Orgueil the carrier of ^(54)Cr anomalies as nanoparticles (3.6 Ă— solar). Such large enrichments in ^(54)Cr can only be produced in SNe. The mineralogy of the grains supports condensation in the O/Ne-O/C zones of an SNII, although a Type Ia origin cannot be excluded. We suggest that planetary materials incorporated different amounts of these nanoparticles, possibly due to late injection by a nearby SN that also delivered ^(26)Al and ^(60)Fe to the solar system. This idea explains why the relative abundance of ^(54)Cr and other neutron-rich isotopes vary between planets and meteorites. We anticipate that future isotopic studies of the grains identified here will shed new light on the birth of the solar system and the conditions in SNe

    Thermal-magnetic noise measurement of spin-torque effects on ferromagnetic resonance in MgO-based magnetic tunnel junctions

    Thermal-magnetic noise at ferromagnetic resonance (T-FMR) can be used to measure magnetic perpendicular anisotropy of nanoscale magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). For this purpose, T-FMR measurements were conducted with an external magnetic field up to 14 kOe applied perpendicular to the film surface of MgO-based MTJs under a dc bias. The observed frequency-field relationship suggests that a 20 A CoFeB free layer has an effective demagnetization field much smaller than the intrinsic bulk value of CoFeB, with 4PiMeff = (6.1 +/- 0.3) kOe. This value is consistent with the saturation field obtained from magnetometry measurements on extended films of the same CoFeB thickness. In-plane T-FMR on the other hand shows less consistent results for the effective demagnetization field, presumably due to excitations of more complex modes. These experiments suggest that the perpendicular T-FMR is preferred for quantitative magnetic characterization of nanoscale MTJs.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by AP
