Il viaggio, lo sguardo, la scrittura

    No full text

Magris had a deep relationship with his hometown Trieste, while feeling the need to distance himself from it through his travels. Travelling is a metaphor for life; it is a weave between the will for conservation and innovation, as well as research. These issues emerge in significant narrative pages such as Non luogo a procedere (2015), which is a lucid and disenchanted consideration of the history of the city, moved by a strong ethical charge, and Tempo curvo a Krems (2019), which is a profound synthesis of the many aspects of Magris’ fictional and critical work

Tuning the Drug Release from Antibacterial Polycaprolactone/Rifampicin-Based Core-Shell Electrospun Membranes: A Proof of Concept

The employment of coaxial fibers for guided tissue regeneration can be extremely advantageous since they allow the functionalization with bioactive compounds to be preserved and released with a long-term efficacy. Antibacterial coaxial membranes based on poly-epsilon-caprolactone (PCL) and rifampicin (Rif) were synthesized here, by analyzing the effects of loading the drug within the core or on the shell layer with respect to non-coaxial matrices. The membranes were, therefore, characterized for their surface properties in addition to analyzing drug release, antibacterial efficacy, and biocompatibility. The results showed that the lower drug surface density in coaxial fibers hinders the interaction with serum proteins, resulting in a hydrophobic behavior compared to non-coaxial mats. The air-plasma treatment increased their hydrophilicity, although it induced rifampicin degradation. Moreover, the substantially lower release of coaxial fibers influenced the antibacterial efficacy, tested against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Indeed, the coaxial matrices were inhibitory and bactericidal only against S. aureus, while the higher release from non-coaxial mats rendered them active even against E. coli. The biocompatibility of the released rifampicin was assessed too on murine fibroblasts, revealing no cytotoxic effects. Hence, the presented coaxial system should be further optimized to tune the drug release according to the antibacterial effectiveness

The invisible businessman: Nuclear physics, patenting practices, and trading activities in the 1930s

In the 1930s the production of patents for the protection of intellectual rights became central to the research activities of Enrico Fermi and his group, consistently with a research policy emerging within the Italian Fascist Regime. Behind their work was an international network consisting of businessmen, industrialists, and multinationals who helped them patent their method for the production of artificial radioactive elements and to promote its industrial exploitation. The lack of research funding combined with a more aggressive foreign policy of the regime made it impossible for the group to continue these activities in Rome, and in 1938 the promulgation of racial laws forced them to migrate abroad

Combined Approach of Mechanochemistry and Electron Crystallography for the Discovery of 1D and 2D Coordination Polymers

Mechanochemical synthesis is an attractive preparative method that combines a green approach with versatility, efficiency, and rapidity of reaction. However, it often yields microcrystalline materials, and their small crystal size is a major hindrance to structure elucidation with conventional single-crystal or powder X-ray diffraction methods. This work presents the novel approach of combining mechanochemistry with electron diffraction techniques to elucidate the crystal structure of metal−organic compounds of zinc(II) and copper(II) with 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid and 4,4′-bipyridine

Rifampicin-loaded electrospun polycaprolactone membranes: Characterization of stability, antibacterial effects and urotheliocytes proliferation

Pathological conditions such as infections, cancer, inflammation, or iatrogenic lesions, can hinder the cor-rect functionality of the ureter and its structural integrity. Several strategies for the regeneration of the ureter and the restoration of its functionality are available but the best strategy has not been reached yet. Among the proposed strategies, a promising one is the development of tubular scaffolds, in particular exploiting electrospinning technique. In this work, antibacterial electrospun polycaprolactone/rifampicin (PCL/Rif) membranes were prepared and characterized. The membranes are characterized by randomly oriented nanofibers with a homogeneous diameter, as determined by scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical characterization, performed with uniaxial tensile tests, showed a suitable stability over time and a proper deformability. The rifampicin release, investigated by UV spectrophotometry, showed a burst release in the first part of the experiment and a sustained release over time. The membranes are biocompatible and able to support the adhesion and proliferation of urotheliocytes. Moreover, PCL/Rif membranes showed an antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and other bacterial strains belonging to the "ESKAPE" group. Considering the possibility to use the electrospinning for the production of tubu-lar scaffolds, the described membranes represent a promising starting point for the preparation of uret-eral scaffolds with antibacterial properties.(c) 2022 The Authors.
