The effect of goal-directed therapy on mortality in patients with sepsis - earlier is better: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
__Introduction:__ The Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines recommend goal-directed therapy (GDT) for the early resuscitation of patients with sepsis. However, the findings of the ProCESS (Protocolized Care for Early Septic Shock) trial showed no benefit from GDT for reducing mortality rates in early septic shock. We performed a meta-analysis to integrate these findings with existing literat
A Novel TGFβ Modulator that Uncouples R-Smad/I-Smad-Mediated Negative Feedback from R-Smad/Ligand-Driven Positive Feedback
As some of the most widely utilised intercellular signalling molecules, transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) superfamily members play critical roles in normal development and become disrupted in human disease. Establishing appropriate levels of TGFβ signalling involves positive and negative feedback, which are coupled and driven by the same signal transduction components (R-Smad transcription factor complexes), but whether and how the regulation of the two can be distinguished are unknown. Genome-wide comparison of published ChIP-seq datasets suggests that LIM dom
Effects of long memory in the order submission process on the properties of recurrence intervals of large price fluctuations
Understanding the statistical properties of recurrence intervals of extreme
events is crucial to risk assessment and management of complex systems. The
probability distributions and correlations of recurrence intervals for many
systems have been extensively investigated. However, the impacts of microscopic
rules of a complex system on the macroscopic properties of its recurrence
intervals are less studied. In this Letter, we adopt an order-driven stock
market model to address this issue for stock returns. We find that the
distributions of the scaled recurrence intervals of simulated returns have a
power law scaling with stretched exponential cutoff and the intervals possess
multifractal nature, which are consistent with empirical results. We further
investigate the effects of long memory in the directions (or signs) and
relative prices of the order flow on the characteristic quantities of these
properties. It is found that the long memory in the order directions (Hurst
index ) has a negligible effect on the interval distributions and the
multifractal nature. In contrast, the power-law exponent of the interval
distribution increases linearly with respect to the Hurst index of the
relative prices, and the singularity width of the multifractal nature
fluctuates around a constant value when and then increases with
. No evident effects of and are found on the long memory of
the recurrence intervals. Our results indicate that the nontrivial properties
of the recurrence intervals of returns are mainly caused by traders' behaviors
of persistently placing new orders around the best bid and ask prices.Comment: 6 EPL pages including 6 figure
The MALATANG Survey : The L GAS-L IR Correlation on Sub-kiloparsec Scale in Six Nearby Star-forming Galaxies as Traced by HCN J = 4 → 3 and HCO + J = 4 → 3
This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article published in The Astrophysical Journal. The Version of Record is available online at https://doi.org/10.3847/1538-4357/aac512.We present HCN J = 4→3 and HCO+ J = 4→3 maps of six nearby star-forming galaxies, NGC 253, NGC 1068, IC 342, M82, M83, and NGC 6946, obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the MALATANG survey. All galaxies were mapped in the central 2×2 region at 14 (FWHM) resolution (corresponding to linear scales of ∼0.2-1.0 kpc). The LIR-Ldense relation, where the dense gas is traced by the HCN J = 4→3 and the HCO+ J = 4→3 emission, measured in our sample of spatially resolved galaxies is found to follow the linear correlation established globally in galaxies within the scatter. We find that the luminosity ratio, LIR/Ldense, shows systematic variations with LIR within individual spatially resolved galaxies, whereas the galaxy-integrated ratios vary little. A rising trend is also found between LIR/Ldense ratio and the warm-dust temperature gauged by the 70 μm/100 μm flux ratio. We find that the luminosity ratios of IR/HCN (4-3) and IR/HCO+ (4-3), which can be taken as a proxy for the star formation efficiency (SFE) in the dense molecular gas (SFE dense), appear to be nearly independent of the dense gas fraction ( f dense) for our sample of galaxies. The SFE of the total molecular gas (SFEmol) is found to increase substantially with f dense when combining our data with those on local (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies and high-z quasars. The mean LHCN(4-3) LHCO+(4-3) line ratio measured for the six targeted galaxies is 0.9±0.6. No significant correlation is found for the L'HCN(4-3) L'HCO+(4-3) ratio with the star formation rate as traced by L IR, nor with the warm-dust temperature, for the different populations of galaxies.Peer reviewe
Achieving middleware execution efficiency: hardware-assisted garbage collection operations
A novel class of microRNA-recognition elements that function only within open reading frames.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are well known to target 3' untranslated regions (3' UTRs) in mRNAs, thereby silencing gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. Multiple reports have also indicated the ability of miRNAs to target protein-coding sequences (CDS); however, miRNAs have been generally believed to function through similar mechanisms regardless of the locations of their sites of action. Here, we report a class of miRNA-recognition elements (MREs) that function exclusively in CDS regions. Through functional and mechanistic characterization of these 'unusual' MREs, we demonstrate that CDS-targeted miRNAs require extensive base-pairing at the 3' side rather than the 5' seed; cause gene silencing in an Argonaute-dependent but GW182-independent manner; and repress translation by inducing transient ribosome stalling instead of mRNA destabilization. These findings reveal distinct mechanisms and functional consequences of miRNAs that target CDS versus the 3' UTR and suggest that CDS-targeted miRNAs may use a translational quality-control-related mechanism to regulate translation in mammalian cells
Observation of a near-threshold enhancement in th p pbar mass spectrum from radiative J/psi-->gamma p pbar decays
We observe a narrow enhancement near 2mp in the invariant mass spectrum of
ppbar pairs from radiative J/psi-->gamma ppbar decays. The enhancement can be
fit with either an S- or P-wave Breit Wigner fuction. In the case of the S-wave
fit, the peak mass is below the 2mp threshold and the full width is less than
30 MeV. These mass and width values are not consistent with the properties of
any known meson resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
