A classification of 2D fermionic and bosonic topological orders
The string-net approach by Levin and Wen, and the local unitary
transformation approach by Chen, Gu, and Wen, provide ways to classify
topological orders with gappable edge in 2D bosonic systems. The two approaches
reveal that the mathematical framework for 2+1D bosonic topological order with
gappable edge is closely related to unitary fusion category theory. In this
paper, we generalize these systematic descriptions of topological orders to 2D
fermion systems. We find a classification of 2+1D fermionic topological orders
with gappable edge in terms of the following set of data , that satisfy a set of non-linear
algebraic equations. The exactly soluble Hamiltonians can be constructed from
the above data on any lattices to realize the corresponding topological orders.

Detection of human telomerase reverse transcriptase mRNA in cells obtained by lavage of the pleura is not associated with worse outcome in patients with stage I/II non–small cell lung cancer: Results from Cancer and Leukemia Group B 159902
ObjectivePrevious studies suggest that cytologic analysis of cells obtained by lavage of the pleural surfaces at the time of resection of non–small cell lung cancer can identify patients at risk for recurrence. Because telomerase gene expression has been associated with worse outcome in non–small cell lung cancer, we hypothesized that identification of cells obtained from pleural lavage that express telomerase would identify patients at risk for recurrent disease.MethodsPatients with presumed non–small cell lung cancer underwent thoracotomy with curative intent. Cells obtained by lavage of the pleural surfaces were analyzed for telomerase catalytic subunit human telomerase reverse transcriptase mRNA expression using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.ResultsA total of 194 patients with stage I/II non–small cell lung cancer had adequate samples, and median follow-up was 60 months (17-91 months). By using Cox models, no statistical differences were found between human telomerase reverse transcriptase–negative and positive patients in disease-free survival (hazard ratio, 1.28; 95% confidence interval, 0.85-1.94; log-rank test, P = .2349) or overall survival (hazard ratio, 1.13; 95% confidence interval, 0.72-1.79; log-rank test, P = .5912)ConclusionsDetection of human telomerase reverse transcriptase in cells obtained from pleural lavage of patients with stage I/II non–small cell lung cancer does not identify patients at risk for recurrent disease
Temperature-dependent efficiency droop of blue InGaN micro-light emitting diodes
Temperature-dependent trends in radiative and Auger recombination coefficients have been determined at different injection carrier concentrations using InGaN micro-light emitting diodes 40 ÎĽm in diameter. The differential lifetime was obtained first from the measured modulation bandwidth and was then employed to calculate the carrier concentration in the quantum well active region. When the temperature increases, the carrier concentration increases, but both the radiative and Auger recombination coefficients decrease. In addition, the temperature dependence of radiative and Auger recombination coefficients is weaker at a higher injection carrier concentration, which is strongly related to phase space filling

Pattern selection in the absolutely unstable regime as a nonlinear eigenvalue problem: Taylor vortices in axial flow
A unique pattern selection in the absolutely unstable regime of a driven,
nonlinear, open-flow system is analyzed: The spatiotemporal structures of
rotationally symmetric vortices that propagate downstream in the annulus of the
rotating Taylor-Couette system due to an externally imposed axial through-flow
are investigated for two different axial boundary conditions at the in- and
outlet. Unlike the stationary patterns in systems without through-flow the
spatiotemporal structures of propagating vortices are independent of parameter
history, initial conditions, and system's length. They do, however, depend on
the axial boundary conditions, the driving rate of the inner cylinder and the
through-flow rate. Our analysis of the amplitude equation shows that the
pattern selection can be described by a nonlinear eigenvalue problem with the
frequency being the eigenvalue. Approaching the border between absolute and
convective instability the eigenvalue problem becomes effectively linear and
the selection mechanism approaches that one of linear front propagation.

Identification of leukocyte surface P2X7 as a biomarker associated with Alzheimer\u27s disease
Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) has shown altered immune responses in the periphery. We studied P2X7 (a proinflammatory receptor and a scavenger receptor) and two integrins, CD11b and CD11c, on the surface of circulating leukocytes and analysed their associations with Aβ-PET, brain atrophy, neuropsychological assessments, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. Total 287 age-matched, sex-balanced participants were recruited in a discovery cohort and two validation cohorts through the AIBL study and studied using tri-colour flow cytometry. Our results demonstrated reduced expressions of P2X7, CD11b, and CD11c on leukocytes, particularly monocytes, in Aβ +ve cases compared with Aβ -ve controls. P2X7 and integrin downregulation was observed at pre-clinical stage of AD and stayed low throughout disease course. We further constructed a polygenic risk score (PRS) model based on 12 P2RX7 risk alleles to assess the genetic impact on P2X7 function in AIBL and ADNI cohorts. No significant association was identified between the P2RX7 gene and AD, indicating that P2X7 downregulation in AD is likely caused by environmental changes rather than genetic factors. In conclusion, the downregulation of P2X7 and integrins at pre-clinical stage of AD indicates altered pro-inflammatory responses, phagocytic functions, and migrating capabilities of circulating monocytes in early AD pathogenesis. Our study not only improves our understanding of peripheral immune involvement in early stage of AD but also provides more insights into novel biomarker development, diagnosis, and prognosis of AD
A phase Ib/IIa clinical trial of dantrolene sodium in patients with Wolfram syndrome
BACKGROUNDWolfram syndrome is a rare ER disorder characterized by insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, optic nerve atrophy, and progressive neurodegeneration. Although there is no treatment for Wolfram syndrome, preclinical studies in cell and rodent models suggest that therapeutic strategies targeting ER calcium homeostasis, including dantrolene sodium, may be beneficial.METHODSBased on results from preclinical studies on dantrolene sodium and ongoing longitudinal studies, we assembled what we believe is the first-ever clinical trial in pediatric and adult Wolfram syndrome patients with an open-label phase Ib/IIa trial design. The primary objective was to assess the safety and tolerability of dantrolene sodium in adult and pediatric Wolfram syndrome patients. Secondary objectives were to evaluate the efficacy of dantrolene sodium on residual pancreatic β cell functions, visual acuity, quality-of-life measures related to vision, and neurological functions.RESULTSDantrolene sodium was well tolerated by Wolfram syndrome patients. Overall, β cell functions were not significantly improved, but there was a significant correlation between baseline β cell functions and change in β cell responsiveness (R2, P = 0.004) after 6-month dantrolene therapy. Visual acuity and neurological functions were not improved by 6-month dantrolene sodium. WNT signaling regulates self-renewal and differentiation of prostate cancer cells with stem cell characteristics
Prostate cancer cells with stem cell characteristics were identified in human prostate cancer cell lines by their ability to form from single cells self-renewing prostaspheres in non-adherent cultures. Prostaspheres exhibited heterogeneous expression of proliferation, differentiation and stem cell-associated makers CD44, ABCG2 and CD133. Treatment with WNT inhibitors reduced both prostasphere size and self-renewal. In contrast, addition of Wnt3a caused increased prostasphere size and self-renewal, which was associated with a significant increase in nuclear Î’-catenin, keratin 18, CD133 and CD44 expression. As a high proportion of LNCaP and C4-2B cancer cells express androgen receptor we determined the effect of the androgen receptor antagonist bicalutamide. Androgen receptor inhibition reduced prostasphere size and expression of PSA, but did not inhibit prostasphere formation. These effects are consistent with the androgen-independent self-renewal of cells with stem cell characteristics and the androgen-dependent proliferation of transit amplifying cells. As the canonical WNT signaling effector Î’-catenin can also associate with the androgen receptor, we propose a model for tumour propagation involving a balance between WNT and androgen receptor activity. That would affect the self-renewal of a cancer cell with stem cell characteristics and drive transit amplifying cell proliferation and differentiation. In conclusion, we provide evidence that WNT activity regulates the self-renewal of prostate cancer cells with stem cell characteristics independently of androgen receptor activity. Inhibition of WNT signaling therefore has the potential to reduce the self-renewal of prostate cancer cells with stem cell characteristics and improve the therapeutic outcome.Peer reviewe
Potential conservation of circadian clock proteins in the phylum Nematoda as revealed by bioinformatic searches
Although several circadian rhythms have been described in C. elegans, its molecular clock remains elusive. In this work we employed a novel bioinformatic approach, applying probabilistic methodologies, to search for circadian clock proteins of several of the best studied circadian model organisms of different taxa (Mus musculus, Drosophila melanogaster, Neurospora crassa, Arabidopsis thaliana and Synechoccocus elongatus) in the proteomes of C. elegans and other members of the phylum Nematoda. With this approach we found that the Nematoda contain proteins most related to the core and accessory proteins of the insect and mammalian clocks, which provide new insights into the nematode clock and the evolution of the circadian system.Fil: Romanowski, AndrĂ©s.
