Spin paramagnetism in d-wave superconductors
The Ginzburg-Landau equations are derived from the microscopic theory for
clean layered superconductors with pairing symmetry, including
the Pauli paramagnetism effect. The upper critical field parallel to
the axis is calculated. A comparison with the experimental data for YBCO
suggests that, relative to the orbital effect, the Pauli paramagnetism
contribution to is significant. The reversible magnetization in
high magnetic fields is also calculated, showing strong temperature dependence
of the slope , as a consequence of the spin paramagnetism. A simple
expression for the high temperature spin susceptibility is derived, in a good
agreement with the Knight shift measurements on YBCO.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; minor changes are included; reference 35 is

Coherent vortex structures and 3D enstrophy cascade
Existence of 2D enstrophy cascade in a suitable mathematical setting, and
under suitable conditions compatible with 2D turbulence phenomenology, is known
both in the Fourier and in the physical scales. The goal of this paper is to
show that the same geometric condition preventing the formation of
singularities - 1/2-H\"older coherence of the vorticity direction - coupled
with a suitable condition on a modified Kraichnan scale, and under a certain
modulation assumption on evolution of the vorticity, leads to existence of 3D
enstrophy cascade in physical scales of the flow.Comment: 15 pp; final version -- to appear in CM
Mechanical and magnetic properties of composite materials with polymer matrix
Many of modern technologies require materials with unusual combinations of properties that cannot be met by the conventional metal alloys, ceramics, and polymeric materials. Material property combinations and ranges have been extended by the development of composite materials. Development of Nd-Fe-B/polymer composite magnetic materials has significantly increased interest in research and development of bonded magnets, since particles of Nd-Fe-B alloys are proved to be very suitable for their production. This study investigates the mechanical and magnetic properties of compression molded Nd-Fe-B magnets with different content of magnetic powder in epoxy matrix. Mechanical properties were investigated at ambient temperature according to ASTM standard D 3039-00. The obtained results show that tensile strength and elongation decrease with an increase of Nd-Fe-B particles content in epoxy matrix. The modulus of elasticity increases, which means that in exploitation material with higher magnetic powder content, subjected to the same level of stress, undergoes 2 to 3.5 times smaller deformation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the morphology of sample surfaces and fracture surfaces caused by the tensile strength tests. The results of SQUID magnetic measurements show an increase of magnetic properties of the investigated composites with increasing content of Nd-Fe-B particles
Revised experimental upper limit on the electric dipole moment of the neutron
We present for the first time a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the experimental results that set the current world sensitivity limit on the magnitude of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron. We have extended and enhanced our earlier analysis to include recent developments in the understanding of the effects of gravity in depolarizing ultracold neutrons; an improved calculation of the spectrum of the neutrons; and conservative estimates of other possible systematic errors, which are also shown to be consistent with more recent measurements undertaken with the apparatus. We obtain a net result of dn=−0.21±1.82×10−26 e cm, which may be interpreted as a slightly revised upper limit on the magnitude of the EDM of 3.0×10−26 e cm (90% C.L.) or 3.6×10−26 e cm (95% C.L.)
Gravitational depolarization of ultracold neutrons: comparison with data
We compare the expected effects of so-called gravitationally enhanced depolarization of ultracold neutrons to measurements carried out in a spin-precession chamber exposed to a variety of vertical magnetic-field gradients. In particular, we have investigated the dependence upon these field gradients of spin-depolarization rates and also of shifts in the measured neutron Larmor precession frequency. We find excellent qualitative agreement, with gravitationally enhanced depolarization accounting for several previously unexplained features in the data
Spontaneous Spin Polarized Currents in Superconductor-Ferromagnetic Metal Heterostructures
We study a simple microscopic model for thin, ferromagnetic, metallic layers
on semi-infinite bulk superconductor. We find that for certain values of the
exchange spliting, on the ferromagnetic side, the ground states of such
structures feature spontaneously induced spin polarized currents. Using a
mean-field theory, which is selfconsistent with respect to the pairing
amplitude , spin polarization and the spontaneous current
, we show that not only there are Andreev bound states in the
ferromagnet but when their energies are near zero they support
spontaneous currents parallel to the ferromagnetic-superconducting interface.
Moreover, we demonstrate that the spin-polarization of these currents depends
sensitively on the band filling.Comment: 4 pages, 5 Postscript figures (included
Measurement of the permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron
We present the result of an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute using Ramsey's method of separated oscillating magnetic fields with ultracold neutrons (UCN). Our measurement stands in the long history of EDM experiments probing physics violating time reversal invariance. The salient features of this experiment
were the use of a Hg-199 co-magnetometer and an array of optically pumped cesium vapor magnetometers to cancel and correct for magnetic field changes. The statistical analysis was performed on blinded datasets by two separate groups while the estimation of systematic effects profited from an
unprecedented knowledge of the magnetic field. The measured value of the neutron EDM is d_{\rm n} = (0.0\pm1.1_{\rm stat}\pm0.2_{\rmsys})\times10^{-26}e\,{\rm cm}
Collinear helium under periodic driving: stabilization of the asymmetric stretch orbit
The collinear eZe configuration of helium, with the electrons on opposite
sides of the nucleus, is studied in the presence of an external electromagnetic
(laser or microwave) field. We show that the classically unstable "asymmetric
stretch" orbit, on which doubly excited intrashell states of helium with
maximum interelectronic angle are anchored, can be stabilized by means of a
resonant driving where the frequency of the electromagnetic field equals the
frequency of Kepler-like oscillations along the orbit. A static magnetic field,
oriented parallel to the oscillating electric field of the driving, can be used
to enforce the stability of the configuration with respect to deviations from
collinearity. Quantum Floquet calculations within a collinear model of the
driven two-electron atom reveal the existence of nondispersive wave packets
localized on the stabilized asymmetric stretch orbit, for double excitations
corresponding to principal quantum numbers of the order of N > 10.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure
Characterization of the global network of optical magnetometers to search for exotic physics (GNOME)
The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers to search for Exotic physics (GNOME) is a network of geographically separated, time-synchronized, optically pumped atomic magnetometers that is being used to search for correlated transient signals heralding exotic physics. The GNOME is sensitive to nuclear- and electron-spin couplings to exotic fields from astrophysical sources such as compact dark-matter objects (for example, axion stars and domain walls). Properties of the GNOME sensors such as sensitivity, bandwidth, and noise characteristics are studied in the present work, and features of the network’s operation (e.g., data acquisition, format, storage, and diagnostics) are described. Characterization of the GNOME is a key prerequisite to searches for and identification of exotic physics signatures
Observation of gravitationally induced vertical striation of polarized ultracold neutrons by spin-echo spectroscopy
We describe a spin-echo method for ultracold neutrons (UCNs) confined in a precession chamber and exposed to a |B 0 |=1 μT magnetic field. We have demonstrated that the analysis of UCN spin-echo resonance signals in combination with knowledge of the ambient magnetic field provides an excellent method by which to reconstruct the energy spectrum of a confined ensemble of neutrons. The method takes advantage of the relative dephasing of spins arising from a gravitationally induced striation of stored UCNs of different energies, and also permits an improved determination of the vertical magnetic-field gradient with an exceptional accuracy of 1.1 pT/cm . This novel combination of a well-known nuclear resonance method and gravitationally induced vertical striation is unique in the realm of nuclear and particle physics and should prove to be invaluable for the assessment of systematic effects in precision experiments such as searches for an electric dipole moment of the neutron or the measurement of the neutron lifetime
