In search of higher competitiveness, organizations are in search of innovative business models in order to foster economic benefits. In Slovenia, several clusters are being formed, including the Slovenian Transport Logistics Cluster (STLC) as one of the most important cluster. Currently, STLC is in the stage of dynamic growth, demanding business model formation and adequate informatization. The main goal of the paper is to present the informatization of STLC, bridging the gap between Supply Chain Management (SCM) and E-Logistics. The informatization of STLC is presented through several phases. The first phase is business modeling of existing business processes of organizations (AS-IS model). The results of the first phase give us an in-depth view of STLC that is used for future business model setup. Next, TO-BE processes are created, which are to be implemented and supported through informatization. The result of the informatization project is shown as homogenic and transparent business activity between cluster members. The purposes of STLC informatization are business model creation, standardization of business processes, cost cutting, improved business performance, operational times decrease, asset management, and shipment tracing, which are the basics of economic competitiveness

THE STRATEGIC IS PLANNING PRACTICES IN SLOVENIA

The paper presents the results a survey on the strategic IS planning practices of Slovenia\u27s large organizations. The survey was based on a questionnaire previously developed in Singapore, and the results from both countries, one a developed country and the other in transition, are compared. It highlights the participation, critical success factors, initiators and the main benefits of strategic IS planning. The results, when compared to similar studies, show a very low number of companies that use strategic IS planning. It is also interesting to note that top management plays the role of a leading initiator in Slovenian organizations whereas the role of IS management is surprisingly modest. The main benefits of the strategic IS planning from the Slovenian business perspective are improved internal co-ordination, efficient and effective management of IS resources and improved productivity

E-INVOICING AND E-GOVERNMENT – IMPACT ON BUSINESS PROCESSES

Electronic invoicing (eINV) presents a possibility to use information communication technology for both the automating and redesigning business processes. Therefore, several initiatives at European level have been raised in order to facilitate the eINV environment. From the 1st of January 2015, eINV has become compulsory for the Slovenian public sector and companies with a registered office in Slovenia providing public services. However, since not every “e-initiative” is successful, the paper examines the effect of using eINV on business process performance. The paper therefore analyses whether eINV is streamlining administrative procedures, enhancing security and cutting costs. Moreover, it also analyses whether business processes were merely automated or also redesigned. Even though at the moment the regulation only concerns public sector, it may also present a large incentive to eINV in the private sector and therefore it is important to outline both its advantages and its pitfalls

Does IT have a real business value?

    Get PDF
The business value of information technology (IT) has been debated for a number of years. While some authors attributed large productivity improvements, substantial value added contribution and impact on business performance, others report that IT has not had any bottom-line impact. Nevertheless productivity, value added and business profitability are related, they are ultimately separate questions. Using the results of the survey on enterprise computing in 92 Slovene large organizations several relevant hypotheses are tested. The results show that IT investments reflect in increased productivity and value added. However, the link between IT investments and business performance has not been confirmed

Artificial Intelligence Methods for Modelling Tremor Mechanisms

Tremors are one of the most common movement disorders primarily associated with various neurological diseases. Since there are more than 20 different types of tremors, differentiation between them is important from the treatment point of view. In the thesis, we focus on differentiation between three of the most common tremors: Parkinsonian, essential and mixed type of tremor. Our first goal was to build a diagnostic model for distinguishing between Parkinsonian, essential and mixed type of tremors, based on clinical examination data, family history and digital spirography. The process of building a model was carried out using argument-based machine learning which enabled us to build a decision model through the process of knowledge elicitation from the domain expert (in our case from a neurologist). The obtained model consists of thirteen rules that are medically sensible. The process of knowledge elicitation itself contributed to the higher classification accuracy of the final model in comparison with the initial one. In the final diagnostic model, attributes derived from the spirography were included in more than half of the rules. This motivated us to build a model based solely on the digital spirography data. For the needs of constructing an understandable model, we first built several attributes which represented domain medical knowledge. We have built more than 500 different attributes which were used in a logistic regression to construct the final diagnostic model. The model is able to distinguish subjects with tremors from those without tremors with 90% classification accuracy. During the process of attribute construction, we wanted to know what our attributes were detecting. Thus, we have developed a method for attribute visualisation on series. The method not only helped us with attribute construction, but it is also useful for visual interpretation of the diagnostic model's decisions. The visualisation method and consequently the decision model were evaluated with the help of three independent neurology experts. The results show that both the diagnostic model and the visualisation are meaningful and cover medical knowledge of the domain. The final diagnostic model is built into the freely available ParkinsonCheck mobile application
