Sodium: a charge-transfer insulator at high pressures

    Get PDF
By means of first-principles methods we analyze the optical response of transparent dense sodium as a function of applied pressure. We discover an unusual kind of charge-transfer exciton that proceeds from the interstitial distribution of valence electrons repelled away from the ionic cores by the Coulomb interaction and the Pauli repulsion. The predicted absorption spectrum shows a strong anisotropy with light polarization that just at pressures above the metal-insulator transition manifests as sodium being optically transparent in one direction but reflective in the other. This result provides a key information about the crystal structure of transparent sodium, a new unconventional inorganic electride.Comment: revtex4, 5+8 page

Histoire de la littérature grecque chrétienne. Introduction.

Sharing Cultural Heritage: the Clavius on the Web Project

In the last few years the amount of manuscripts digitized and made available on the Web has been constantly increasing. However, there is still a considarable lack of results concerning both the explicitation of their content and the tools developed to make it available. The objective of the Clavius on the Web project is to develop a Web platform exposing a selection of Christophorus Clavius letters along with three different levels of analysis: linguistic, lexical and semantic. The multilayered annotation of the corpus involves a XML-TEI encoding followed by a tokenization step where each token is univocally identified through a CTS urn notation and then associated to a part-of-speech and a lemma. The text is lexically and semantically annotated on the basis of a lexicon and a domain ontology, the former structuring the most relevant terms occurring in the text and the latter representing the domain entities of interest (e.g. people, places, etc.). Moreover, each entity is connected to linked and non linked resources, including DBpedia and VIAF. Finally, the results of the three layers of analysis are gathered and shown through interactive visualization and storytelling techniques. A demo version of the integrated architecture was developed

Modal analysis and condition monitoring for an electric motor through MEMS accelerometers

Piezoelectric accelerometers are commonly employed for diagnosing machine faults, due to their accuracy. In the last few years, however, MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) accelerometers have attracted strong interest thanks to their low cost. In this work, a synchronous electric motor with an integrated MEMS sensor is studied and results are compared from both MEMS and piezoelectric sensors. A modal analysis is performed, using data from all available sensors. Comparing the frequency response functions and the natural frequencies shows the limitations of the MEMS sensor. One can then correct the MEMS measurements, by using global statistical parameters calculated on the data or by defining a “filter” function between the signals, thus improving the signal-to-noise ratio. It is found that MEMS sensors may replace piezoelectric ones for diagnostic applications. This way, an inexpensive measurement system (which needs to be calibrated only once, before installation, against higher-accuracy sensors) can be used for vibration monitoring of electric motors

A European Researchers’ Night project on mechanical vibrations for high school students

    Get PDF
The present works were conceived to be exhibited during the 2022 European Researchers’ Night (ERN 2022), at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The idea is to illustrate the key concepts of mechanical vibration through the use of 3D models and virtual simulation analysis. The paper is directed to high school students planning to enroll in a mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree, in order to approach or consolidate some fundamental concepts of mechanical vibration. Topics not easy to explain, such as the natural frequencies of a body, could be presented more effectively using physical models. Mathematical formalism will be kept to a minimum, as it is beyond the scope of this paper
