    Electronic structure of the substitutional vacancy in graphene: Density-functional and Green's function studies

    We study the electronic structure of graphene with a single substitutional vacancy using a combination of the density-functional, tight-binding, and impurity Green's function approaches. Density functional studies are performed with the all-electron spin-polarized linear augmented plane wave (LAPW) method. The three sp2σsp^2 \sigma dangling bonds adjacent to the vacancy introduce localized states (Vσ\sigma) in the mid-gap region, which split due to the crystal field and a Jahn-Teller distortion, while the pzπp_z \pi states introduce a sharp resonance state (Vπ\pi) in the band structure. For a planar structure, symmetry strictly forbids hybridization between the σ\sigma and the π\pi states, so that these bands are clearly identifiable in the calculated band structure. As for the magnetic moment of the vacancy, the Hund's-rule coupling aligns the spins of the four localized Vσ1\sigma_1 \uparrow \downarrow, Vσ2\sigma_2 \uparrow , and the Vπ\pi \uparrow electrons resulting in a S=1 state, with a magnetic moment of 2μB2 \mu_B, which is reduced by about 0.3μB0.3 \mu_B due to the anti-ferromagnetic spin-polarization of the π\pi band itinerant states in the vicinity of the vacancy. This results in the net magnetic moment of 1.7μB1.7 \mu_B. Using the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, we reproduce the well-known 1/r\sim 1/r decay of the localized Vπ\pi wave function with distance and in addition find an interference term coming from the two Dirac points, previously unnoticed in the literature. The long-range nature of the Vπ\pi wave function is a unique feature of the graphene vacancy and we suggest that this may be one of the reasons for the widely varying relaxed structures and magnetic moments reported from the supercell band calculations in the literature.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures.     Evolutionary-game-based dynamical tuning for multi-objective model predictive control

    Model predictive control (MPC) is one of the most used optimization-based control strategies for large-scale systems, since this strategy allows to consider a large number of states and multi-objective cost functions in a straightforward way. One of the main issues in the design of multi-objective MPC controllers, which is the tuning of the weights associated to each objective in the cost function, is treated in this work. All the possible combinations of weights within the cost function affect the optimal result in a given Pareto front. Furthermore, when the system has time-varying parameters, e.g., periodic disturbances, the appropriate weight tuning might also vary over time. Moreover, taking into account the computational burden and the selected sampling time in the MPC controller design, the computation time to find a suitable tuning is limited. In this regard, the development of strategies to perform a dynamical tuning in function of the system conditions potentially improves the closed-loop performance. In order to adapt in a dynamical way the weights in the MPC multi-objective cost function, an evolutionary-game approach is proposed. This approach allows to vary the prioritization weights in the proper direction taking as a reference a desired region within the Pareto front. The proper direction for the prioritization is computed by only using the current system values, i.e., the current optimal control action and the measurement of the current states, which establish the system cost function over a certain point in the Pareto front. Finally, some simulations of a multi-objective MPC for a real multi-variable case study show a comparison between the system performance obtained with static and dynamical tuning.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    A self-controlled case series to assess the effectiveness of beta blockers for heart failure in reducing hospitalisations in the elderly

    Background: To determine the suitability of using the self-controlled case series design to assess improvements in health outcomes using the effectiveness of beta blockers for heart failure in reducing hospitalisations as the example. Methods: The Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs administrative claims database was used to undertake a self-controlled case-series in elderly patients aged 65 years or over to compare the risk of a heart failure hospitalisation during periods of being exposed and unexposed to a beta blocker. Two studies, the first using a one year period and the second using a four year period were undertaken to determine if the estimates varied due to changes in severity of heart failure over time. Results: In the one year period, 3,450 patients and in the four year period, 12, 682 patients had at least one hospitalisation for heart failure. The one year period showed a non-significant decrease in hospitalisations for heart failure 4-8 months after starting beta-blockers, (RR, 0.76; 95% CI (0.57-1.02)) and a significant decrease in the 8-12 months post-initiation of a beta blocker for heart failure (RR, 0.62; 95% CI (0.39, 0.99)). For the four year study there was an increased risk of hospitalisation less than eight months post-initiation and significant but smaller decrease in the 8-12 month window (RR, 0.90; 95% CI (0.82, 0.98)). Conclusions: The results of the one year observation period are similar to those observed in randomised clinical trials indicating that the self-controlled case-series method can be successfully applied to assess health outcomes. However, the result appears sensitive to the study periods used and further research to understand the appropriate applications of this method in pharmacoepidemiology is still required.     Multi-species sequence comparison reveals dynamic evolution of the elastin gene that has involved purifying selection and lineage-specific insertions/deletions

    BACKGROUND: The elastin gene (ELN) is implicated as a factor in both supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS) and Williams Beuren Syndrome (WBS), two diseases involving pronounced complications in mental or physical development. Although the complete spectrum of functional roles of the processed gene product remains to be established, these roles are inferred to be analogous in human and mouse. This view is supported by genomic sequence comparison, in which there are no large-scale differences in the ~1.8 Mb sequence block encompassing the common region deleted in WBS, with the exception of an overall reversed physical orientation between human and mouse. RESULTS: Conserved synteny around ELN does not translate to a high level of conservation in the gene itself. In fact, ELN orthologs in mammals show more sequence divergence than expected for a gene with a critical role in development. The pattern of divergence is non-conventional due to an unusually high ratio of gaps to substitutions. Specifically, multi-sequence alignments of eight mammalian sequences reveal numerous non-aligning regions caused by species-specific insertions and deletions, in spite of the fact that the vast majority of aligning sites appear to be conserved and undergoing purifying selection. CONCLUSIONS: The pattern of lineage-specific, in-frame insertions/deletions in the coding exons of ELN orthologous genes is unusual and has led to unique features of the gene in each lineage. These differences may indicate that the gene has a slightly different functional mechanism in mammalian lineages, or that the corresponding regions are functionally inert. Identified regions that undergo purifying selection reflect a functional importance associated with evolutionary pressure to retain those features

    Optimization of the protein concentration process from residual peanut oil-cake

    The objective of this study was to find the best process conditions for preparing protein concentrate from residual peanut oil-cake (POC). The study was carried out on POC from industrial peanut oil extraction. Different protein extraction and precipitation conditions were used: water/ flour ratio (10:1, 20:1 and 30:1), pH (8, 9 and 10), NaCl concentration (0 and 0.5 M), extraction time (30, 60 and 120 min), temperature (25, 40 and 60 °C), extraction stages (1, 2 and 3), and precipitation pH (4, 4.5 and 5). The extraction and precipitation conditions which showed the highest protein yield were 10:1 water/flour ratio, extraction at pH 9, no NaCl, 2 extraction stages of 30 min at 40 °C and precipitation at pH 4.5. Under these conditions, the peanut protein concentrate (PC) contained 86.22% protein, while the initial POC had 38.04% . POC is an alternative source of protein that can be used for human consumption or animal nutrition. Therefore, it adds value to an industry residue.<br><br>El objetivo de este trabajo fue encontrar las mejores condiciones para obtener un concentrado de proteínas a partir de la torta residual de maní (POC). El estudio se llevó a cabo en POC provenientes de la extracción industrial de aceite de maní. Se utilizaron distintas condiciones para la extracción y precipitación de proteínas: relación agua / harina (10:1, 20:1 y 30:1), pH de extracción (8, 9 y 10), concentración de NaCl (0 y 0,5 M), tiempo de extracción (30, 60 y 120 min), temperatura (25, 40 y 60 °C), número de etapas de extracción (1, 2 y 3), y el pH de precipitación (4, 4,5 y 5). Las condiciones de extracción y de precipitación que mostraron mayor rendimiento de proteína fueron: relación de 10:1 en agua / harina, pH de extracción de 9, en ausencia de NaCl, 2 etapas de extracción de 30 min cada una a 40 °C y el pH de precipitación de 4,5. En estas condiciones, el concentrado de proteína de maní (PC) fue de 86,22%, mientras que el porcentaje de proteínas de la POC inicial fue de 38,04%. Las POC son una fuente alternativa de proteínas que pueden ser utilizadas para el consumo humano o la alimentación animal. De esta manera, se le puede dar un valor agregado extra a un residuo de la industria del aceite del maní

    Interaction between maternal caffeine intake during pregnancy and CYP1A2 C164A polymorphism affects infant birth size in the Hokkaido study

    BACKGROUND: Caffeine, 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine, is widely consumed by women of reproductive age. Although caffeine has been proposed to inhibit fetal growth, previous studies on the effects of caffeine on infant birth size have yielded inconsistent findings. This inconsistency may result from failure to account for individual differences in caffeine metabolism related to polymorphisms in the gene for CYP1A2, the major caffeine-metabolizing enzyme. METHODS: Five hundred fourteen Japanese women participated in a prospective cohort study in Sapporo, Japan, from 2002 to 2005, and 476 mother-child pairs were included for final analysis. RESULTS: Caffeine intake was not significantly associated with mean infant birth size. When caffeine intake and CYP1A2 C164A genotype were considered together, women with the AA genotype and caffeine intake of >= 300 mg per day had a mean reduction in infant birth head circumference of 0.8 cm relative to the reference group after adjusting for confounding factors. In a subgroup analysis, only nonsmokers with the AA genotype and caffeine intake of >= 300 mg per day had infants with decreased birth weight (mean reduction, 277 g) and birth head circumference (mean reduction, 1.0 cm). CONCLUSION: Nonsmokers who rapidly metabolize caffeine may be at increased risk for having infants with decreased birth size when consuming >= 300 mg of caffeine per day.This is the author's accepted version of their manuscript of the following article: Sasaki, et al.
