    Power in the Multinational Corporation in Industry Equilibrium

    Recent theories of the multinational corporation introduce the property rights model of the firm and examine whether to integrate our outsource firm activities locally or to a foreign country. This paper focus instead on the internal organization of the multinational corporation by examining the power allocation between headquarters and subsidiaries. We provide a framework to analyse the interaction between the decision to serve the local market by exporting or FDI, market acces and the optimal mode of organization of the multinational corporation. We find that subsidiary managers are given most autonomy in their decision how to run the firm at intermediate levels of local competition. We then provide comparative statics for changes in fixed FDI entry costs and trade costs, information technology, the number of local competitors, and in the size of the local market

    The difference in the time dependent CP asymmetries between the modes B−−>psiKSB --> psi K_S and B−−>phiKSB --> phi K_S is a clean signal for physics beyond the Standard Model. This interpretation could fail if there is a large enhancement of the matrix element of the b−−>uubarsb --> u ubar s operator between the BdB_d initial state and the phiKSphi K_S final state.     Newly qualified physical education teachers’ experiences of developing subject knowledge prior to, during and after a Postgraduate Certificate in Education course

    Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) inspections of secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) physical education courses in England between 1996 and 1998 (OFSTED, 1999) were critical of student teachers' subject knowledge. The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of subject knowledge and influences on the development of that subject knowledge in a sample of three newly qualified teachers (NQTs) who had completed a PGCE physical education course in England. The research comprised semi-structured interviews and analysis of documentation. Among these three NQTs there were some similarities, but more differences in terms of the development of subject knowledge as well as different influences on the development of subject knowledge. These results suggest that teacher educators may need to be flexible in how they approach and support the development of student teachers' subject knowledge. Results also suggest that teacher educators should work more closely with colleagues teaching sports-related undergraduate degree courses to support the development of subject knowledge for those students who wish to progress to a PGCE physical education course

    The Emergence of Entrepreneurship in Cuba: What Can We Learn

    Entrepreneurs around the world would agree that being an entrepreneur provides a gateway to flexibility and freedom and it requires an enormous amount of responsibility and commitment. When Raul Castro announced that Cubans could officially run their own business, it created a means for Cuba’s citizens to have choices. This article provides an overview of Cuba’s emerging entrepreneurs and how their endeavors are stimulating the formation of a middle class. Driven by economic liberalization, the Cuban entrepreneur and Cuban consumer are able to aspire for goods and services that were not attainable between 1959 and 2008. This study provides an overview about the motivating and personal characteristics of Cuba’s entrepreneurs. The importance of this group on the formation of Cuba’s middle class is addressed. Our findings indicate what can be done to provide continued support to this group so that the middle class of Cuba continues to grow

    N-body decomposition of bipartite networks

    In this paper, we present a method to project co-authorship networks, that accounts in detail for the geometrical structure of scientists collaborations. By restricting the scope to 3-body interactions, we focus on the number of triangles in the system, and show the importance of multi-scientists (more than 2) collaborations in the social network. This motivates the introduction of generalized networks, where basic connections are not binary, but involve arbitrary number of components.     Constraining the CKM Parameters using CP Violation in semi-leptonic B Decays

    We discuss the usefulness of the CP violating semi-leptonic asymmetry a_{SL} not only as a signal of new physics, but also as a tool in constraining the CKM parameters. We show that this technique could yield useful results in the first years of running at the B factories. We present the analysis graphically in terms of M_{12}, the dispersive part of the B-Bbar mixing amplitude. This is complementary to the usual unitarity triangle representation and often allows a cleaner interpretation of the data.Comment: 15 pages REVTEX, 7 figure

    Exchange biasing of single-domain Ni nanoparticles spontaneously grown in an antiferromagnetic MnO matrix

    Exchange biased composites of ferromagnetic single-domain Ni nanoparticles embedded within large grains of MnO have been prepared by reduction of Nix_xMn1−x_{1-x}O4_4 phases in flowing hydrogen. The Ni precipitates are 15-30 nm in extent, and the majority are completely encased within the MnO matrix. The manner in which the Ni nanoparticles are spontaneously formed imparts a high ferromagnetic- antiferromagnetic interface/volume ratio, which results in substantial exchange bias effects. Exchange bias fields of up to 100 Oe are observed, in cases where the starting Ni content xx in the precursor Nix_xMn1−x_{1-x}O4_4 phase is small. For particles of approximately the same size, the exchange bias leads to significant hardening of the magnetization, with the coercive field scaling nearly linearly with the exchange bias field.Comment: 6 pages PDFLaTeX with 9 figure

    Fractal dimensions of the Q-state Potts model for the complete and external hulls

    Fortuin-Kastelyn clusters in the critical QQ-state Potts model are conformally invariant fractals. We obtain simulation results for the fractal dimension of the complete and external (accessible) hulls for Q=1, 2, 3, and 4, on clusters that wrap around a cylindrical system. We find excellent agreement between these results and theoretical predictions. We also obtain the probability distributions of the hull lengths and maximal heights of the clusters in this geometry and provide a conjecture for their form.Comment: 9 pages 4 figure

    Resonances in 1D disordered systems: localization of energy and resonant transmission

    Localized states in one-dimensional open disordered systems and their connection to the internal structure of random samples have been studied. It is shown that the localization of energy and anomalously high transmission associated with these states are due to the existence inside the sample of a transparent (for a given resonant frequency) segment with the minimal size of order of the localization length. A mapping of the stochastic scattering problem in hand onto a deterministic quantum problem is developed. It is shown that there is no one-to-one correspondence between the localization and high transparency: only small part of localized modes provides the transmission coefficient close to one. The maximal transmission is provided by the modes that are localized in the center, while the highest energy concentration takes place in cavities shifted towards the input. An algorithm is proposed to estimate the position of an effective resonant cavity and its pumping rate by measuring the resonant transmission coefficient. The validity of the analytical results have been checked by extensive numerical simulations and wavelet analysis
