Large Representation Recurrences in Large N Random Unitary Matrix Models
In a random unitary matrix model at large N, we study the properties of the
expectation value of the character of the unitary matrix in the rank k
symmetric tensor representation. We address the problem of whether the standard
semiclassical technique for solving the model in the large N limit can be
applied when the representation is very large, with k of order N. We find that
the eigenvalues do indeed localize on an extremum of the effective potential;
however, for finite but sufficiently large k/N, it is not possible to replace
the discrete eigenvalue density with a continuous one. Nonetheless, the
expectation value of the character has a well-defined large N limit, and when
the discreteness of the eigenvalues is properly accounted for, it shows an
intriguing approximate periodicity as a function of k/N.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure
The Rich Structure of Gauss-Bonnet Holographic Superconductors
We study fully backreacting, Gauss-Bonnet (GB) holographic superconductors in
5 bulk spacetime dimensions. We explore the system's dependence on the scalar
mass for both positive and negative GB coupling, . We find that when
the mass approaches the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound and
the effect of backreaction is to increase the
critical temperature, , of the system: the opposite of its effect in the
rest of parameter space. We also find that reducing below zero
increases and that the effect of backreaction is diminished. We study the
zero temperature limit, proving that this system does not permit regular
solutions for a non-trivial, tachyonic scalar field and constrain possible
solutions for fields with positive masses. We investigate singular, zero
temperature solutions in the Einstein limit but find them to be incompatible
with the concept of GB gravity being a perturbative expansion of Einstein
gravity. We study the conductivity of the system, finding that the inclusion of
backreaction hinders the development of poles in the conductivity that are
associated with quasi-normal modes approaching the real axis from elsewhere in

The order of the quantum chromodynamics transition predicted by the standard model of particle physics
We determine the nature of the QCD transition using lattice calculations for
physical quark masses. Susceptibilities are extrapolated to vanishing lattice
spacing for three physical volumes, the smallest and largest of which differ by
a factor of five. This ensures that a true transition should result in a
dramatic increase of the susceptibilities.No such behaviour is observed: our
finite-size scaling analysis shows that the finite-temperature QCD transition
in the hot early Universe was not a real phase transition, but an analytic
crossover (involving a rapid change, as opposed to a jump, as the temperature
varied). As such, it will be difficult to find experimental evidence of this

Three geographically separate domestications of Asian rice
Domesticated rice (Oryza sativa L.) accompanied the dawn of Asian civilization(1) and has become one of world's staple crops. From archaeological and genetic evidence various contradictory scenarios for the origin of different varieties of cultivated rice have been proposed, the most recent based on a single domestication(2,3). By examining the footprints of selection in the genomes of different cultivated rice types, we show that there were three independent domestications in different parts of Asia. We identify wild populations in southern China and the Yangtze valley as the source of the japonica gene pool, and populations in Indochina and the Brahmaputra valley as the source of the indica gene pool. We reveal a hitherto unrecognized origin for the aus variety in central India or Bangladesh. We also conclude that aromatic rice is a result of a hybridization between japonica and aus, and that the tropical and temperate versions of japonica are later adaptations of one crop. Our conclusions are in accord with archaeological evidence that suggests widespread origins of rice cultivation(1,4). We therefore anticipate that our results will stimulate a more productive collaboration between genetic and archaeological studies of rice domestication, and guide utilization of genetic resources in breeding programmes aimed at crop improvement.European Research Council [339941]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Ultraviolet asymptotics of scalar and pseudoscalar correlators in hot Yang-Mills theory
Inspired by recent lattice measurements, we determine the short-distance (a
> omega >> pi T) asymptotics
of scalar (trace anomaly) and pseudoscalar (topological charge density)
correlators at 2-loop order in hot Yang-Mills theory. The results are expressed
in the form of an Operator Product Expansion. We confirm and refine the
determination of a number of Wilson coefficients; however some discrepancies
with recent literature are detected as well, and employing the correct values
might help, on the qualitative level, to understand some of the features
observed in the lattice measurements. On the other hand, the Wilson
coefficients show slow convergence and it appears uncertain whether this
approach can lead to quantitative comparisons with lattice data. Nevertheless,
as we outline, our general results might serve as theoretical starting points
for a number of perhaps phenomenologically more successful lines of

Composite Fermion Metals from Dyon Black Holes and S-Duality
We propose that string theory in the background of dyon black holes in
four-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime is holographic dual to conformally
invariant composite Dirac fermion metal. By utilizing S-duality map, we show
that thermodynamic and transport properties of the black hole match with those
of composite fermion metal, exhibiting Fermi liquid-like. Built upon
Dirac-Schwinger-Zwanziger quantization condition, we argue that turning on
magnetic charges to electric black hole along the orbit of Gamma(2) subgroup of
SL(2,Z) is equivalent to attaching even unit of statistical flux quanta to
constituent fermions. Being at metallic point, the statistical magnetic flux is
interlocked to the background magnetic field. We find supporting evidences for
proposed holographic duality from study of internal energy of black hole and
probe bulk fermion motion in black hole background. They show good agreement
with ground-state energy of composite fermion metal in Thomas-Fermi
approximation and cyclotron motion of a constituent or composite fermion

Which doctors and with what problems contact a specialist service for doctors? A cross sectional investigation
Background:
In the United Kingdom, specialist treatment and intervention services for doctors are underdeveloped. The MedNet programme, created in 1997 and funded by the London Deanery, aims to fill this gap by providing a self-referral, face-to-face, psychotherapeutic assessment service for doctors in London and South-East England. MedNet was designed to be a low-threshold service, targeting doctors without formal psychiatric problems. The aim of this study was to delineate the characteristics of doctors utilising the service, to describe their psychological morbidity, and to determine if early intervention is achieved.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study including all consecutive self-referred doctors (n = 121, 50% male) presenting in 2002â2004 was conducted. Measures included standardised and bespoke questionnaires both self-report and clinician completed. The multi-dimensional evaluation included: demographics, CORE (CORE-OM, CORE-Workplace and CORE-A) an instrument designed to evaluate the psychological difficulties of patients referred to outpatient services, Brief Symptom Inventory to quantify caseness and formal psychiatric illness, and Maslach Burnout Inventory.
Results:
The most prevalent presenting problems included depression, anxiety, interpersonal, self-esteem and work-related issues. However, only 9% of the cohort were identified as severely distressed psychiatrically using this measure. In approximately 50% of the sample, problems first presented in the preceding year. About 25% were on sick leave at the time of consultation, while 50% took little or no leave in the prior 12 months. A total of 42% were considered to be at some risk of suicide, with more than 25% considered to have a moderate to severe risk. There were no significant gender differences in type of morbidity, severity or days off sick.
Conclusion:
Doctors displayed high levels of distress as reflected in the significant proportion of those who were at some risk of suicide; however, low rates of severe psychiatric illness were detected. These findings suggest that MedNet clients represent both ends of the spectrum of severity, enabling early clinical engagement for a significant proportion of cases that is of importance both in terms of personal health and protecting patient care, and providing a timely intervention for those who are at risk, a group for whom rapid intervention services are in need and an area that requires further investigation in the UK
Evaluation of the efficacy of Alpron disinfectant for dental unit water lines
AIMS: To assess the efficacy of a disinfectant, Alpron, for controlling microbial contamination within dental unit water lines. METHODS: The microbiological quality of water emerging from the triple syringe, high speed handpiece, cup filler and surgery hand wash basin from six dental units was assessed for microbiological total viable counts at 22 degrees C and 37 degrees C before and after treatment with Alpron solutions. RESULTS: The study found that the use of Alpron disinfectant solutions could reduce microbial counts in dental unit water lines to similar levels for drinking water. This effect was maintained in all units for up to six weeks following one course of treatment. In four out of six units the low microbial counts were maintained for 13 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Disinfectants may have a short term role to play in controlling microbial contamination of dental unit water lines to drinking water quality. However, in the longer term attention must be paid to redesigning dental units to discourage the build up of microbial biofilms
Thermodynamics of Large N Gauge Theories with Chemical Potentials in a 1/D Expansion
In order to understand thermodynamical properties of N D-branes with chemical
potentials associated with R-symmetry charges, we study a one dimensional large
N gauge theory (bosonic BFSS type model) as a first step. This model is
obtained through a dimensional reduction of a 1+D dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills
theory and we use a 1/D expansion to investigate the phase structure. We find
three phases in the \mu-T plane. We also show that all the adjoint scalars
condense at large D and obtain a mass dynamically. This dynamical mass protects
our model from the usual perturbative instability of massless scalars in a
non-zero chemical potential. We find that the system is at least meta-stable
for arbitrary large values of the chemical potentials in D \to \infty limit. We
also explore the existence of similar condensation in higher dimensional gauge
theories in a high temperature limit. In 2 and 3 dimensions, the condensation
always happens as in one dimensional case. On the other hand, if the dimension
is higher than 4, there is a critical chemical potential and the condensation
