H2 from biofuels and carriers: A concerted homo-heterogeneous kinetic model of ethanol partial oxidation and steam reforming on Rh/Al2O3
Investigating bioethanol as a renewable energy source is crucial in the context of H2-based economy. Ethanol partial oxidation and steam reforming on Rh/Al2O3 represent promising processes that have already proved to be highly tangled reacting systems. In this work, a significant step forward has been done towards the development of an engineering tool that can capture all the relevant features of the process; a combined homo-heterogeneous kinetic scheme was developed and validated against experimental data, informative of the catalytic and thermal activation of the C2-alcohol. In particular, a 36-species reduced homogeneous scheme was developed, able to cap -ture observed trends with a limited computational load. On the other side, a macro-kinetic heterogeneous scheme with six molecular reactions (ethanol oxidative dehydrogenation, total oxidation, decomposition, dehydrogenation, steam reforming and acetaldehyde post -reforming) was tuned to accurately describe ethanol/O2 and ethanol/H2O reacting systems.& COPY; 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. On modified simple reacting spheres kinetic model for chemically reactive gases
Versão dos autores para esta publicação.We consider the modiffed simple reacting spheres (MSRS) kinetic model that, in addition to the conservation of energy and momentum, also preserves the angular momentum in the collisional processes. In contrast to the line-of-center models or chemical reactive models considered in [1], in the MSRS (SRS) kinetic models, the microscopic reversibility (detailed balance) can be easily shown to be satisfied, and thus all mathematical aspects of the model can be fully justi ed. In the MSRS model, the molecules behave as if they were single mass points with two internal states. Collisions may alter the internal states of the molecules, and this occurs when the kinetic energy associated with the reactive motion exceeds the activation energy. Reactive and non-reactive collision events are considered to be hard spheres-like. We consider a four component mixture A, B, A*, B*, in which the chemical reactions are of the type A + B = A* + B*, with A* and B* being distinct species from A and B. We provide fundamental physical and mathematical properties of the MSRS model, concerning the consistency of the model, the entropy inequality for the reactive system, the characterization of the equilibrium solutions, the macroscopic setting of the model and the spatially homogeneous evolution. Moreover, we show that the MSRS kinetic model reduces to the previously considered SRS model (e.g., [2], [3]) if the reduced masses of the reacting pairs are the same before and after collisions, and state in the Appendix the more important properties of the SRS system.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologi
Multiple terahertz beams based on a Fourier grating and a quantum cascade laser
Large heterodyne receiver arrays (~100 pixel) allow astronomical instrumentations mapping more area within limited space mission lifetime. One challenge is to generate multiple local oscillator (LO) beams. Here, We succeeded in generating 81 beams at 3.86 THz by combining a reflective, metallic Fourier grating with an unidirectional antenna coupled 3rd-order distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade laser (QCL). We have measured the diffracted 81 beams by scanning a single pyroelectric detector at a plane, which is in the far field for the diffraction beams. The measured output beam pattern agrees well with a simulated result from COMSOL Multiphysics with respect to the angular distribution and power distribution among the 81 beams. We also derived the diffraction efficiency to be 94\pm 3\%, which is very close to what was simulated for a manufactured Fourier grating (97%). For an array of equal superconducting hot electron bolometer mixers, 64 out of 81 beams can pump the HEB mixers with similar power, resulting in receiver sensitivities within 10%. Such a combination of a Fourier grating and a QCL can create an LO with 100 beams or more, enabling a new generation of large heterodyne arrays for astronomical instrumentation. RadioLab project: knowledge of radon gas in Italy
AbstractRadioLab is an Italian project, addressed to school-age people, and designed for the dissemination of scientific culture on the theme of environmental radioactivity, with particular regards to the importance of knowledge of radon gas exposure. The project is a nationwide initiative promoted by the National Institute of Nuclear Physics- INFN. First tool used by the project, and of immediate impact to assess the public awareness on radon, is the administration of the survey “do you know the radon gas?”. In the survey, together with the knowledge of radon and of its sources, information on personal, cultural and territorial details regarding the interviewees are also taken. Reasonably, the survey invests not only young people, but also their relatives, school workers and, gradually, the public. The survey is administrated during exhibitions or outreach events devoted to schools, but also open to the public. The survey is in dual form: printed and online. The online mode clearly leads RadioLab project even outside the school environment. Based on the results of the survey, several statistical analyses have been performed and many conclusions are drawn about the knowledge of the population on the radon risk. The RadioLab benefit and the requirement to carry on the project goals, spreading awareness of environmental radioactivity from radon, emerge. The dataset involves all twenty Italian regions and consists of 28,612 entries covering the 5-year period 2018–2022

The Simons Observatory: Science goals and forecasts
The Simons Observatory (SO) is a new cosmic microwave background experiment
being built on Cerro Toco in Chile, due to begin observations in the early
2020s. We describe the scientific goals of the experiment, motivate the design,
and forecast its performance. SO will measure the temperature and polarization
anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background in six frequency bands: 27, 39,
93, 145, 225 and 280 GHz. The initial configuration of SO will have three
small-aperture 0.5-m telescopes (SATs) and one large-aperture 6-m telescope
(LAT), with a total of 60,000 cryogenic bolometers. Our key science goals are
to characterize the primordial perturbations, measure the number of
relativistic species and the mass of neutrinos, test for deviations from a
cosmological constant, improve our understanding of galaxy evolution, and
constrain the duration of reionization. The SATs will target the largest
angular scales observable from Chile, mapping ~10% of the sky to a white noise
level of 2 K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, to measure the
primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio, , at a target level of .
The LAT will map ~40% of the sky at arcminute angular resolution to an expected
white noise level of 6 K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands,
overlapping with the majority of the LSST sky region and partially with DESI.
With up to an order of magnitude lower polarization noise than maps from the
Planck satellite, the high-resolution sky maps will constrain cosmological
parameters derived from the damping tail, gravitational lensing of the
microwave background, the primordial bispectrum, and the thermal and kinematic
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, and will aid in delensing the large-angle
polarization signal to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio. The survey will also
provide a legacy catalog of 16,000 galaxy clusters and more than 20,000
extragalactic sources
