The Role of Familism in Raising Bilingual Children

    Get PDF
This qualitative study investigates the role that familism plays in how Latinx caregivers raise bilingual children. 31 semi-structured interviews with Latinx parents ( explored parenting strategies used to promote bilingualism in children. Interview transcripts (i.e., written records) were thematically coded and analyzed, revealing several themes regarding caregivers’ values and practices in navigating bilingual parenting. Caregivers expressed values such as an obligation to instill bilingualism in their children to uphold tradition and a need to maintain relationships within their extended family network. Interviews revealed caregivers’ practices of teaching bilingualism as well. Caregivers conveyed a dependence on extended family members to expose their children to Spanish, while also using their personal language experiences within their family context to influence how they promote bilingualism in their children. These findings demonstrate the significant influence of familism on caregivers’ values of bilingualism and the practices they employ to teach their children to be bilingual

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in associated WH production in the eΌτ and ΌΌτ final states

The Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson is mainly produced from gluon-gluon and vector boson fusion at LHC. The associated production with vector bosons, although with a lower cross section, can be also considered a sensitive channel because a significant background rejection can be achieved using the presence of highly energetic charged leptons coming from the decays of W/Z. In the lightmass region, the SM Higgs boson decay into τ -lepton pairs has the second highest branching ratio, after the decay into bÂŻ b. For these reasons, a search for WH process is performed, in which the W boson decays into muon or electron, and the Higgs boson into a τ -pair, in which one τ decays into leptons and the other hadronically (τh). The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector during 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1 at a center-of-mass energy of 7TeV at LHC. The results are consistent with the expected SM background, so upper limits are set at 95% CL for the SM Higgs boson production cross section. The method used to estimate the background from data, is based on the fake-rate technique (CMS Physics Analysis Summary, CMS PAS HIG-12-006 (2012))

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into tau pairs produced in association with a W or Z boson

A search of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson, W or Z, is performed at LHC, using data collected with the CMS detector during 2011 and 2012, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 24.5 fb−1. The associated production represents an interesting channel for the low-mass Higgs boson search, thanks to the presence of highly energetic leptons coming from W and Z decays which suppress the most relevant SM backgrounds. The Higgs decay search is performed in the di-τ decay mode, in which each τ can decay into an electron, a muon or hadronically (τh) and a neutrino. The WH channel has three leptons in the final state, with W decaying into electron or muon and a neutrino; instead the ZH channel is performed in a four leptons final state, where the Z decays into a pair of electrons or muons. The data analysed are compatible with the SM expected background, and no significant excess is observed

Formulas in connection with parameters related to convexity of paths on three vertices: caterpillars and unit interval graphs

    Get PDF
We present formulas to compute the P3 -interval number, the P3 -hull number and the percolation time for a caterpillar, in terms of certain sequences associated with it. In addition, we find a connection between the percolation time of a unit interval graph and a parameter involving the diameter of a unit interval graph related to it. Finally, we present a hereditary graph class, defined by forbidden induced subgraphs, such that its percolation time is equal to one.Fil: GonzĂĄlez, LucĂa M.. Micropulse Transscleral Cyclophotocoagulation: A Hypothesis for the Ideal Parameters

MicroPulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (IRIDEX Corp., Mountain View, CA) is a novel technique that uses repetitive micropulses of active diode laser (On cycles) interspersed with resting intervals (Off cycles). It has been proposed that the OFF cycles allow thermal dissipation and, therefore, reduce collateral damage. The literature suggests that Micropulse has a better safety profile compared to traditional continuous-wave cyclophotocoagulation. However, because it is a relatively new technique, there are no clear guidelines stating the ideal laser parameters that would allow the best balance between high and sustained effectiveness with minimal side effects. This research reviewed the literature to approximate ideal parameters for single-session treatment. To simplify the comparison between studies, this study used Joules (J) as a way to standardize the energy levels employed. The reviewed clinical publications allowed reduction of these parameters to a range between 112 and 150 J of total energy, which allows a moderate IOP lowering effect of around 30% with few/no complications. An additional narrowing of the parameters was achieved after analyzing recently published experimental data. These data suggest a different mechanism of action for the Micropulse, similar to that of the pilocarpine. This effect was maximum at 150 J. Since clinical studies show few or no complications, even at those energy levels, it could be hypothesized that the ideal parameters can be located at a point closer to 150 J. This data also leads to the concept of dosimetry; the capacity to dose mTSCPC treatment based on desired IOP lowering effect and risk exposure. Further prospective studies are needed to test the proposed evidence-based hypothesis

Logical Rules and a Preliminary Prototype for Translating Mortality Coding Rules from ICD-10 to ICD-11

    Get PDF
Iris is a system for coding multiple causes of death in ICD-10 and for the selection of the underlying cause of death, based on a knowledge base composed by a large number of rules. With the adoption of ICD-11, those rules need translation to ICD-11. A pre-project has been carried out to evaluate feasibility of transition to ICD-11, which included the analysis of the logical meta-rules needed for rule translation and development of a prototype support system for the expert that will translate the coding rules

    Territorialisation process of residential tourism

The last decade has seen a sudden process of change of the territorial dynamics generated by activities that are closely related to significant flows of investments, where most of them are the result of a territorialisation process of residential tourism. This article reviews some of the spatial processes under the influence of previous territorial incidents in a context of conflict between divergent interests of the social structure and the natural environment, under various cultural, social and psychological resistances.
