    Industrializzazione e progresso: la lezione della Rivoluzione d’ottobre

    Industrialization is the only way to achieve the development of the productive forces required for the opening of a more advanced historical phase, but industrialization is also the historical constitutive model of western capitalism. Marx and Engels never had nostalgia about past times, and least of all about a hypothetical peaceful state of nature, but always looked forward starting from their own times. Following this line of thinking, we will refer to Hegel’s Philosophy of Right for some observations on the nature of labor and its progressive mechanization; and will refer to Marx and Engels (Communist Manifesto; Capital; Grundrisse) for a discussion on industrialization and progress, in order to understand the huge challenge the October Revolution faced but also our contemporary philosophical and political horizon. Keywords: Industrialization; October Revolution; Technology; Marx; Hegel

    Environmental assessment of individual and collective manure management systems

    In intensive livestock area with large nutrient surplus collective management systems can be a suitable solution. However, the collective system should carefully evaluated for environmental sustainability to avoid cross effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental effects of the introduction of a collective treatment plant for energy production and nitrogen removal. For this purpose an assessment methodology, for individual farms and collective treatments plants, has been defined to estimate the emissions of the main pollutants to the air (CO2, CH4, N2O, NH3) and to the soil (N). The method devised has been assessed in a case study (a treatment plant collecting manure from 12 farms). The main effect of the introduction of the collective management system from the environmental point of view is a reduction of greenhouse gases emissions of 61% due to methane emission reduction and renewable energy production. Furthermore, it reduces the amount of nitrogen to be applied to land from 430 kg ha-1 to about 220 kg ha-1, decreases the emission of ammonia in the air by about 17% due to lower amount of nitrogen that is managed by farms in the storage and spreading operations

    Nb superconductive thin film coating on flat Cu disks for high gradient applications

    In this work we present the characterization of Nb superconductive films deposed on copper substrates with two different techniques: the PVD magnetron sputtering and the Pulsed Laser Ablation. In the first method Nb films ∼ 3µm thick were deposited with an average roughness of 160 nm. The superconductivity properties of these films were also determined with a 4-probe resistivity measurement. Data show a superconducting transition at 9.6K as expected from Nb films. With the second technique thick Nb films were deposited on copper substrates using the Pulsed Laser Ablation. In this case the Rutherford Backscattering was used to determine the thickness and the chemical state of these films that show different degrees of oxidation

    Economic and Technical Feasibility of Metering and Sub-metering Systems for Heat Accounting

    The Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU (EED) requires that final users in multi-apartment buildings supplied by common central heating source should be provided by 31 December 2016 with accounting systems, as long as technical feasibility and reasonable costs in relation to the potential energy savings can be demonstrated. Such systems would reflect users actual thermal energy consumption. The typical configuration of Italian multi-apartment buildings implies quite expensive installation costs and sometimes even prevents the installation for technical reasons. Coherently with EED, in such cases alternative cost-efficient methods for heat accounting should be adopted, such as indirect methods. This study assesses the economic and technical feasibility of the most common heat accounting systems. In this paper, after a brief analysis of the different approaches adopted in EU member states, the authors present a cost/benefit analysis that considers the main capital and running costs of individual heat accounting systems with respect to the potential energy savings achievable.     MicroRNAs differentially expressed in actinic keratosis and healthy skin scrapings

    : Actinic keratosis (AK) is a carcinoma in situ precursor of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), the second most common cancer affecting the Caucasian population. AK is frequently present in the sun-exposed skin of the elderly population, UV radiation being the main cause of this cancer, and other risk factors contributing to AK incidence. The dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) observed in different cancers leads to an improper expression of miRNA targets involved in several cellular pathways. The TaqMan Array Human MicroRNA Card assay for miRNA expression profiling was performed in pooled AK compared to healthy skin scraping samples from the same patients. Forty-three miRNAs were modulated in the AK samples. The expression of miR-19b (p < 0.05), -31, -34a (p < 0.001), -126, -146a (p < 0.01), -193b, and -222 (p < 0.05) was validated by RT-qPCR. The MirPath tool was used for MiRNA target prediction and enriched pathways. The top DIANA-mirPath pathways regulated by the targets of the 43 miRNAs are TGF-beta signaling, Proteoglycans in cancer, Pathways in cancer, and Adherens junction (7.30 × 10-10 < p < 1.84 × 10-8). Selected genes regulating the KEGG pathways, i.e., TP53, MDM2, CDKN1A, CDK6, and CCND1, were analyzed. MiRNAs modulated in AK regulate different pathways involved in tumorigenesis, indicating miRNA regulation as a critical step in keratinocyte cancer

    Separating arbitrary free-space beams with an integrated photonic processor

    : Free-space optics naturally offers multiple-channel communications and sensing exploitable in many applications. The different optical beams will, however, generally be overlapping at the receiver, and, especially with atmospheric turbulence or other scattering or aberrations, the arriving beam shapes may not even be known in advance. We show that such beams can be still separated in the optical domain, and simultaneously detected with negligible cross-talk, even if they share the same wavelength and polarization, and even with unknown arriving beam shapes. The kernel of the adaptive multibeam receiver presented in this work is a programmable integrated photonic processor that is coupled to free-space beams through a two-dimensional array of optical antennas. We demonstrate separation of beam pairs arriving from different directions, with overlapping spatial modes in the same direction, and even with mixing between the beams deliberately added in the path. With the circuit's optical bandwidth of more than 40 nm, this approach offers an enabling technology for the evolution of FSO from single-beam to multibeam space-division multiplexed systems in a perturbed environment, which has been a game-changing transition in fiber-optic systems

    Ecodialysis: first strategies to limit damages and reduce costs

    In the medical field, the attention to the environmental impact of industrial processes and products is still limited. In recent years there has been an increased sensitivity towards the environment; meanwhile, the economic burden of hazardous waste disposal is becoming evident. Dialysis is a "big producer" of waste and it has been estimated that disposal costs can be up to 10-40% of the cost of disposables. So there are several reasons of interest on "ecodialysis": the high amount of waste defined as "potentially hazardous", which requires a very expensive management and the recyclability potential of the non-contaminated waste, that has not yet been fully explored in dialysis. This primary study has been performed in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino. Its aim has been to define a schedule of activities by a few brainstorming sessions. This schedule is to be readily performed or it should be developed in detail to optimize, by reducing and recycling, the waste production during the dialysis session. The discussion identified seven basic points for the eco-sustainability of haemodialysis to: [1] reduce packaging; [2] facilitate separation of materials, and [3] their discharge; [4] differentiate materials; [5] clearly highlight the potentially hazardous materials; [6] improve the recyclability of plastic products; [7] propose a path of recovery and reuse. Although a full optimization requires a close cooperation with the manufacturers and is achievable only in the long term, the reduction of one pound of potentially contaminated materials could presently lead, on a national scale, to a saving of several million euros, which can be better employed in investments to improve our treatments

    State-of-the-Art Review on Diabetes Care in Italy.

    Background: Diabetes is a significant health problem in Italy as in other western countries. Objective: To review available epidemiological data and the legislative framework for diabetes care in Italy. Methods: Review of Italian Health Ministry's official documents and analysis of epidemiological data published by Italian Scientific Societies. Findings: Diabetes affects more than 5% of the Italian population. The expenditures for the care of people with diabetes are about €10 billion ($US 11 billion) a year and are increasing over time. Italian law regulates the clinical care of people with diabetes and creates a clinical framework involving medical organizations, prevention programs, personnel training, and legal protection. The National Health Program is structured in essential levels of assistance that can be defined differently in the various regions. In 2013, the "National Diabetes Plan," defining priority areas for intervention, was approved and represents the main regulatory tool for the management of diabetes within the Italian National Health Service. In Italy, the status of diabetes care is being monitored using the data from 2 permanent observatories: the ARNO Observatory Diabetes and the Associazione Medici Diabetologi Annals. Conclusions: A comprehensive approach to diabetes is offered to all citizens, consonant with the constitutionally guaranteed right to health. However, this important effort translates into a relevant financial burden for the National Health Service

    Aurantoside J: a New Tetramic Acid Glycoside from Theonella swinhoei. Insights into the Antifungal Potential of Aurantosides

    The chemical investigation of an Indonesian specimen of Theonella swinhoei afforded four aurantosides, one of which, aurantoside J (5), is a new compound. The structure of this metabolite, exhibiting the unprecedented N-α-glycosidic linkage between the pentose and the tetramate units, has been determined through detailed spectroscopic analysis. The four obtained aurantosides have been tested against five fungal strains (four Candida and one Fusarium) responsible of invasive infections in immuno-compromised patients. The non-cytotoxic aurantoside I (4) was the single compound to show an excellent potency against all the tested strains, thus providing valuable insights about the antifungal potential of this class of compounds and the structure-activity relationships
