    Ultra-Low-Power Configurable Analog Signal Processor for Wireless Sensors

    The demand for on-chip low-power Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) analog signal processing has significantly increased in recent years. Digital signal processors continue to shrink in size as transistors half in size every two years. However, digital signal processors (DSP\u27s) notoriously use more power than analog signal processors (APS\u27s). This thesis presents a configurable analog signal processor (CASP) used for wireless sensors. This CASP contains a multitude of processing blocks include the following: low pass filter (LPF), high pass filter (HPF) integrator, differentiator, operational transconductance amplifier (OTA), rectifier with absolute value functionality, and multiplier. Each block uses current-mode processing and operates in the sub-threshold region of operation. Current-mode processing allows for noise reduction, lower power consumption, and better dynamic range. Each block contains configurable current sources and capacitor banks for maximum adaptability. The blocks were designed, simulated, and fabricated in Cadence using IBM\u27s 130nm CMOS process. The processing blocks were combined into a four by three array and connected using specially designed interconnect fabric. A test structure including the LPF, HPF, and multiplier was also constructed for characterization purposes. The main goals for this project are frequency compression and creating a non-linear energy operator for neural spike detection. The test results for the low-pass filter, integrator, and frequency divider reflected the simulated values. The other blocks didn\u27t perform as well as in simulation. The interconnect fabric ties all the blocks together and achieved maximum configurability with negligible attenuation. Every minute, 24 people around the world are forced to flee their homes. That’s 34,000 people a day who leave everything behind in the hope of finding safety and a better tomorrow. The impact of war, political, racial and religious conflict, and environmental crises of famine and climate change, have caused great suffering and there is a great opportunity to do better. The issues these populations and the countries who receive them face are diverse and complex. They include public health, housing/built environment, cultural integration, public safety, employment/economic and more. How can innovation address these challenges? How do we create the social systems and products to support a healthy, safe and integrated program for refugees? How do we address the physical, emotional, and social needs of refugees to restore hope and opportunity? The solutions may be as far ranging as the challenges, exploring the acute needs during a crisis, as well as the chronic needs of the permanently displaced; looking at immigration and adjustments to new cultures. We encourage participants to draw upon all disciplines, from health professions to architecture, engineering to design, ethics, communication and every way of thinking we have, to find better ways to innovate on physical solutions, processes, policies, systems, and more.     HSLDA concerned with more than just homeschool

    My capstone is just one piece of a greater investigation into homeschooling in America. For my piece, my colleague Keith Medelis reported on the Home School Legal Defense Association, a premiere homeschooling advocacy group that provides legal advice to its members and lobbies against any regulations they find restrictive to the homeschooling process. Our goal was to see exactly what their mission is because beyond homeschooling, the HSLDA advocates for small government, religious (mainly Christian) freedoms and protecting its members from child protective services. A review of 84 court cases revealed that the HSLDA has occasionally engaged in legal battles that have nothing to do with homeschooling. In one case they represented an Army soldier who was court martialed for refusing to wear a U.N. helmet and patch while on duty. In another case they provided counsel for a woman who refused to give her new-born baby to doctors despite the child possibly suffering from life-threatening ailments. This is a text- and image-based piece for which we reviewed nearly 100 court cases, researched multiple news articles and spoke with HSLDA representatives, legal and education experts and government officials.     An Ontological Solution to the Mind-Body Problem

    I argue for an idealist ontology consistent with empirical observations, which seeks to explain the facts of nature more parsimoniously than physicalism and bottom-up panpsychism. This ontology also attempts to offer more explanatory power than both physicalism and bottom-up panpsychism, in that it does not fall prey to either the ‘hard problem of consciousness’ or the ‘subject combination problem’, respectively. It can be summarized as follows: spatially unbound consciousness is posited to be nature’s sole ontological primitive. We, as well as all other living organisms, are dissociated alters of this unbound consciousness. The universe we see around us is the extrinsic appearance of phenomenality surrounding—but dissociated from—our alter. The living organisms we share the world with are the extrinsic appearances of other dissociated alters. As such, the challenge to artificially create individualized consciousness becomes synonymous with the challenge to artificially induce abiogenesis

The authors will investigate the nuts and bolts of an academic library initiating a film series, some of the pitfalls and opportunities such a series entails, and how those pitfalls can be managed and opportunities capitalized upon, as well as touching on some theoretical issues related to these matters, such as collaboration between libraries and faculty, the academic library as place, and engagement vs. outreach

    Validity, Reliability, and Usability of a Smartphone App to Measure Bicycling Location

    This study evaluates concurrent validity, test-retest reliability, and usability of the Strava smartphone app for measuring bicycling locations in urban and rural field tests. Strava location data were inside an 11-meter buffer on average 64% of the time compared to Qstarz' 52%, over 100 evaluations (n participants=73). Most participants agreed or strongly agreed that the Strava app was useful (83%) and that they would prefer to use a smartphone app to track their bicycling (42%). Results indicate that the Strava app is reliable and valid for measuring bicycling locations in these field tests

    Prevalence and number of Salmonella in retail pork sausages

    The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Salmonella in Irish pork sausage at retail level. Samples, comprising branded prepacked sausages, loose sausages from supermarket meat counters and butcher shops, were collected from selected retail sites in four cities from October to December 2001 and from June to August 2002. A 3-tube Most Probable Number (MPN) method was used to enumerate Salmonella in a selected number of samples, which were positive by enrichment. Salmonella serotypes were detected in 4.4% and 1.7% of samples at each of the respective sampling periods; a level similar to those reported in other U.S. and U.K. studies. Limited results available on enumeration suggest that contamination rates were low. This study revealed that Salmonella are present in a proportion of Irish sausages and further risk analysis work is necessary in order to quantify the risk posed to public health.
