Molecular adsorption in graphene with divacancy defects

We have investigated theoretically the adsorption of molecules onto graphene with divacancy defects. Using ab-initio density functional calculations, we have found that O2, CO, N2, B2 and H2O molecules all interact strongly with a divacancy in a graphene layer. Along with a complex geometry of the molecule-graphene bonding, metallic behavior of the graphene layer in presence of CO and N2 molecules have been found with a large density of states in the vicinity of the Fermi level suggesting an increase in the conductivity. The adsorption of N2 is particularly interesting since the N atoms dissociate in the vicinity of the defects, and take the place where the missing C atoms of the divacancy used to sit. In this way, the defected graphene structure is healed geometrically, and at the same time doped with electron states.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Les harraga algériens

    Get PDF
(Premier paragraphe

Synthesis and properties of bis-porphyrin molecular tweezers: effects of spacer flexibility on binding and supramolecular chirogenesis

    No full text
Ditopic binding of various dinitrogen compounds to three bisporphyrin molecular tweezers with spacers of varying conformational rigidity, incorporating the planar enediyne (1), the helical stiff stilbene (2), or the semi-rigid glycoluril motif fused to the porphyrins (3), are compared. Binding constants Ka = 104–106 M?1 reveal subtle differences between these tweezers, that are discussed in terms of porphyrin dislocation modes. Exciton coupled circular dichroism (ECCD) of complexes with chiral dinitrogen guests provides experimental evidence for the conformational properties of the tweezers. The results are further supported and rationalized by conformational analysis

Captured by Evil: The Idea of Corruption in Law

    Get PDF
Corruption is one of the most powerful words in the English language. When it comes to the treatment of corruption by law, however, corruption is a troubled concept. With increasing recognition of the costs of corruption for economic development, democratic governance, international aid programs, and other world goals, attempts to articulate what this destructive force is have led to an avalanche of theoretical writing. In the last fifteen years, corruption has been variously defined as the violation of law, a public servant\u27s breach of public duty, an agent\u27s betrayal of a principal\u27s interests, the pursuit of secrecy, the denial of equality in political influence, and other ways. In the end, however, all of these efforts fall short. Corruption is more than law-breaking: it is more than breaching public duties. To say that A is a thief or that A has breached his duty is not to say that A is corrupt. The latter is far more powerful, far more emotional, far more essential than the others. It is more than secrecy, or the denial of equal opportunity. It is a searing indictment, somehow, not only of A\u27s act but of A\u27s character. It is a statement not only of what A has done, but of what A has become. Corruption is, I argue, a far more powerful idea than these existing legal understandings have articulated: it is the idea of capture by evil, the possession of the individual by evil, in law. Just as we once believed in corruption of the blood in American law, which decreed that offspring of those who had committed crimes were believed to be irrevocably tainted by their parents\u27 depravity, so we still retain - through the idea of corruption - the belief that individual evil extends beyond acts of wrongdoing, or the denial of equal opportunity, or breach of the public trust. It is this idea of corruption, I argue - the idea of capture by evil - that, although unarticulated, drives our understandings of corruption in law. It drives our understanding of corrupt judges, who, once corrupt, we believe will act so in every case. It drives our understanding of campaign finance reform, where we fear deep corruption of the process from the occurrence of corrupt acts. It drives our understanding of corruption as a systemic effect and systemic influence, which presents institutional dangers that are greater than other crimes, and that requires purgation rather than simple law enforcement. This Article explores this deeper understanding of corruption, its impacts in areas such as judicial corruption and campaign finance reform, and its implications for the principle of the rule of law

Analytical and preparative separation and isolation of functionalized fullerenes by conventional HPLC stationary phases : method development and column screening

    No full text
Isolation and purification of functionalized fullerenes from often complex reaction mixtures is challenging due to the hydrophobic nature and low solubility in regular organic solvents. We have developed an HPLC method that efficiently, employing regular reversed phase stationary phases, separates not only C-60 from C-70 in a model mixture, but also C-60 monoadducts from polyadducts and unreacted C-60 from fulleropyrrolidine and hydroarylation example reaction mixtures. Six HPLC columns with regular reversed phase stationary phases were evaluated using varying proportions of acetonitrile in toluene as eluent; with C18 and C12 stationary phases with high surface area (450-400 m(2) g(-1)) being the most efficient regarding separation efficiency and analysis time for all mixtures. The analytical method is effectively transferrable to a preparative scale to isolate the monoaddition products from complex fullerene reaction mixtures

Graphene oxide microstructure control of electrosprayed thin films

The graphene oxide (GO) microstructure, in terms of flake distribution, folding, and crumpling, in thin films affects properties such as electrical conductivity and optical transparency after GO reduction. A thin film can be tailored to the user's application if the microstructure resulting from different deposition methods can be controlled. In this work, we compare the microstructures of GO coatings created through electrospray deposition (ESD) with random deposition processes. The comparisons include both MATLAB simulations and a dip coating process. The microstructure of ESD GO thin films can be altered by changing the distance between the nozzle and the substrate. We developed a semi-automatic image analysis script that analyzes scanning electron microscopy images to find effects of GO stacking or agglomeration, without the risk of human bias. A low nozzle to substrate distance creates structures of flat GO flakes, but solvent flooding the samples causes drying patterns. A high nozzle to substrate distance causes folding and crumpling of the GO flakes due to solvent evaporation, resulting in agglomerated GO on the substrate. For our ESD setup, a nozzle to substrate distance of 2-4 mm produced GO coatings with the lowest combined influence of drying effects and GO flake folding or crumpling
