Conceptual design and performance evaluation of a hybrid concentrating photovoltaic system in preparation for energy
Concentrating sunlight and focussing it on smaller sized solar cells increases the device's power output per unit active area. However, this process tends to increase the solar cell temperature considerably and has the potential to compromise system reliability. Adding a heat exchanger system to regulate this temperature rise, can improve the electrical performance whilst simultaneously providing an additional source of low temperature heat. In this study the performance of a low concentrator photovoltaic system with thermal (LCPV/T) extraction was conceptualised and evaluated in depth. An experimental analysis was performed using a first-generation prototype consisting of 5 units of Cross Compound Parabolic Concentrators (CCPC) connected to a heat extraction unit. A bespoke rotating table was used as experimental apparatus to effectively evaluate the optical performance of the system, as a function of its angular positions to replicate the motion of actual sun. Key design performance parameters for the LCPV/T collector are presented and discussed. This work also provides a useful technique to effectively calculate system performance, as a function of the orientation-dependant electrical characterisation parameters data. Finally, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was also applied to investigate the efficacy of the heat exchanger and hence estimate the overall co-generation benefit of using such optimisation techniques on realistic CPV systems. It was highlighted through these simulations that the water flow rate had the potential to be a critical power-generation optimisation criterion for LCPV-T systems. The maximum power output at normal incidence with concentrators and no water flow was found to be 78.4 mW. The system was found to perform with an average electrical efficiency ranging between 10 and 16% when evaluated at five different geographic locations. Experimental analysis of the data obtained showed an increase in power of 141% (power ratio 2.41) compared to the analogous non-concentrating counterpart. For example, in the case of London which receives an annual solar radiation of 1300 kWh/m2 the system is expected to generate 210 kWh/m2. This may reduce further to include losses due to temperature, reflectance/glazing losses, and electrical losses in cabling and inverter by up to 36% leading to an annual power output of 134 kWh/m2 of module

Enrichment of CpG island shore region hypermethylation in epigenetic breast field cancerization
While changes in DNA methylation are known to occur early in breast carcinogenesis and the landscape of breast tumour DNA methylation is profoundly altered compared with normal tissue, there have been limited efforts to identify DNA methylation field cancerization effects in histologically normal breast tissue adjacent to tumour. Matched tumour, histologically normal tissue of the ipsilateral breast (ipsilateral-normal), and histologically normal tissue of the contralateral breast (contralateral-normal) were obtained from nine women undergoing bilateral mastectomy. Laser capture microdissection was used to select epithelial cells from normal tissue, and neoplastic cells from tumour for genome-scale measures of DNA methylation with the Illumina HumanMethylationEPIC array. We identified substantially more CpG loci that were differentially methylated between contralateral-normal and tumour (63,271 CpG loci q \u3c 0.01), than between ipsilateral-normal and tumour (38,346 CpG loci q \u3c 0.01). We identified differential methylation in ipsilateral-normal relative to contralateral-normal tissue (9,562 CpG loci p \u3c 0.01). In this comparison, hypomethylated loci were significantly enriched for breast cancer-relevant transcription factor binding sites including those for ESR1, FoxA1, and GATA3 and hypermethylated loci were significantly enriched for CpG island shore regions. In addition, progression of shore hypermethylation was observed in tumours compared to matched ipsilateral normal tissue, and these alterations tracked to several well-established tumour suppressor genes. Our results indicate an epigenetic field effect in surrounding histologically normal tissue. This work offers an opportunity to focus investigations of early DNA methylation alterations in breast carcinogenesis and potentially develop epigenetic biomarkers of disease risk

The PCB-based platform is a highly reliable means of controlling CPV cell operational temperature under a range of irradiance conditions. Zero Frequency Current Noise for the Double Tunnel Junction Coulomb Blockade
We compute the zero frequency current noise numerically and in several limits
analytically for the coulomb blockade problem consisting of two tunnel
junctions connected in series. At low temperatures over a wide range of
voltages, capacitances, and resistances it is shown that the noise measures the
variance in the number of electrons in the region between the two tunnel
junctions. The average current, on the other hand, only measures the mean
number of electrons. Thus, the noise provides additional information about
transport in these devices which is not available from measuring the current

3-D Ultrastructure of O. tauri: Electron Cryotomography of an Entire Eukaryotic Cell
The hallmark of eukaryotic cells is their segregation of key biological functions into discrete, membrane-bound organelles. Creating accurate models of their ultrastructural complexity has been difficult in part because of the limited resolution of light microscopy and the artifact-prone nature of conventional electron microscopy. Here we explored the potential of the emerging technology electron cryotomography to produce three-dimensional images of an entire eukaryotic cell in a near-native state. Ostreococcus tauri was chosen as the specimen because as a unicellular picoplankton with just one copy of each organelle, it is the smallest known eukaryote and was therefore likely to yield the highest resolution images. Whole cells were imaged at various stages of the cell cycle, yielding 3-D reconstructions of complete chloroplasts, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticula, Golgi bodies, peroxisomes, microtubules, and putative ribosome distributions in-situ. Surprisingly, the nucleus was seen to open long before mitosis, and while one microtubule (or two in some predivisional cells) was consistently present, no mitotic spindle was ever observed, prompting speculation that a single microtubule might be sufficient to segregate multiple chromosomes
Genetic characterization of primary and metastatic high-grade serous ovarian cancer tumors reveals distinct features associated with survival
High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) is the most lethal histotype of ovarian cancer and the majority of cases present with metastasis and late-stage disease. Over the last few decades, the overall survival for patients has not significantly improved, and there are limited targeted treatment options. We aimed to better characterize the distinctions between primary and metastatic tumors based on short- or long-term survival. We characterized 39 matched primary and metastatic tumors by whole exome and RNA sequencing. Of these, 23 were short-term (ST) survivors (overall survival (OS) \u3c 3.5 years) and 16 were long-term (LT) survivors (OS \u3e 5 years). We compared somatic mutations, copy number alterations, mutational burden, differential gene expression, immune cell infiltration, and gene fusion predictions between the primary and metastatic tumors and between ST and LT survivor cohorts. There were few differences in RNA expression between paired primary and metastatic tumors, but significant differences between the transcriptomes of LT and ST survivors in both their primary and metastatic tumors. These findings will improve the understanding of the genetic variation in HGSC that exist between patients with different prognoses and better inform treatments by identifying new targets for drug development
