Nonextremal Black Hole Microstates and U-duality

A six-parameter family of five-dimensional black hole solutions is constructed which are labeled by their mass, two asymptotic scalar fields and three charges. It is shown that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is exactly matched, arbitrarily far from extremality, by a simple but mysterious duality-invariant extension of previously derived formulae for the number of D-brane states in string theory.Comment: 19 page

The Instability of Charged Black Strings and p-Branes

We investigate the evolution of small perturbations around charged black strings and branes which are solutions of low energy string theory. We give the details of the analysis for the uncharged case which was summarized in a previous paper. We extend the analysis to the small charge case and give also an analysis for the generic case, following the behavior of unstable modes as the charge is modified. <i>Chirotherium barthii </i>Kaup 1835 from the Triassic of the Isle of Arran, Scotland

The mould of a track from SE Arran, and several in situ trackways and individual tracks, as well as a partial trackway on a loose block of Triassic sandstone, from western Arran, represent the first verifiable fossil tracks of Chirotherium from the Triassic of Scotland and support a Scythian (Lower Triassic) age for the base of the Auchenhew Beds. The grouping of the I–IV toes with toe V behind and lateral to the group is characteristic of Chirotherium-like tracks. A comparison with European and American Triassic trackways suggests that the tracks belong to the species Chirotherium barthii Kaup, 1835, first described from Hildburghausen, Germany

Charged Dilaton Black Holes with Unusual Asymptotics

We present a new class of black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity in $n \ge 4$ dimensions. These solutions have regular horizons and a singularity only at the origin. Their asymptotic behavior is neither asymptotically flat nor (anti-) de Sitter. Similar solutions exist for certain Liouville-type potentials for the dilaton.Comment: 24 pages, harvmac.tex, no figure

The chip-tool interface in metal cutting

The main aim of the work described in this dissertation has been to develop a description of the interface between the chip and the rake face of a cutting tool. This interface is of great importance in many manufacturing operations. The experiments are conducted in a vacuum planing machine, which provides precise control of the atmospheric conditions during cutting. The chip/tool interface is studied directly, using a transparent (sapphire) cutting tool to machine various ductile metals, such as lead and aluminium, in air and in vacuum. On the basis of these observations a new classification is made of the zones of contact at the interface in continuous cutting. This description is extended to steel tools and harder workpieces such as copper. The influence of oxygen on the rake face interaction is investigated. Previous workers have noted apparently anomalous behaviour; it is suggested that recent discoveries about the adhesion between metals and oxides help to explain these anomalies. The transparent tool is used to study the access of cutting lubricants to the chip/tool interface and the role of lubricants is examined in the light of the new description of the interface. Continuous cutting with built-up edge formation, experienced with materials such as Duralumin and steel, and discontinuous cutting, experienced with materials such as magnesium and free-machining brass, are studied by means of these new techniques. Some suggestions are made concerning the material properties responsible for these types of cutting behaviour. The conditions of contact at the rake face of the tool are also studied. A study is made of the influence of crystallografhic orientation of the workpiece on the cutting process. Pure single crystals of aluminium, copper and magnesium are machined in various orientations.
