    CAIXA: a Catalogue of AGN In the XMM-Newton Archive I. Spectral analysis

    We present CAIXA, a Catalogue of AGN In the XMM-Newton Archive. It consists of all the radio-quiet X-ray unobscured (NH<2×1022\mathrm{N_H}<2\times10^{22} cm2^{-2}) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) observed by XMM-Newton in targeted observations, whose data are public as of March 2007. With its 156 sources, this is the largest catalogue of high signal-to-noise X-ray spectra of AGN. All the EPIC pn spectra of the sources in CAIXA were extracted homogeneously and a baseline model was applied in order to derive their basic X-ray properties. These data are complemented by multiwavelength data found in the literature: Black Hole masses, Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) of Hβ\beta, radio and optical fluxes. Here we describe our homogeneous spectral analysis of the X-ray data in CAIXA and present all the results on the parameters adopted in our best-fit models.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    A Large, Uniform Sample of X-ray Emitting AGN: Selection Approach and an Initial Catalog from the ROSAT All-Sky and Sloan Digital Sky Surveys

    Many open questions in X-ray astronomy are limited by the relatively small number of objects in uniform optically-identified samples, especially when rare subclasses are considered, or subsets isolated to search for evolution or correlations between wavebands. We describe initial results of a program aimed to ultimately yield 10^4 X-ray source identifications--a sample about an order of magnitude larger than earlier efforts. The technique employs X-ray data from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), and optical imaging and spectroscopic followup from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Optical objects in the SDSS catalogs are automatically cross-correlated with RASS X-ray source positions; then priorities for follow-on SDSS optical spectra of candidate counterparts are automatically assigned using an algorithm based on the known fx/fopt ratios for various classes of X-ray emitters. SDSS parameters for optical morphology, magnitude, colors, plus FIRST radio data, serve as proxies for object class. Initial application of this approach to 1400 deg^2 of sky provides a catalog of 1200 spectroscopically confirmed quasars/AGN that are probable RASS identifications. Most of the IDs are new, and only a few percent of the AGN are likely to be random superpositions. The magnitude and redshift ranges of the counterparts extend over 15<m<21 and 0.03<z<3.6. Although most IDs are quasars and Sy 1s, a variety of other AGN subclasses are also sampled. Substantial numbers of rare AGN are found, including more than 130 narrow-line Seyfert 1s and 45 BL Lac candidates. These results already provide a sizeable set of new IDs, show utility of the sample in multi-waveband studies, and demonstrate the capability of the RASS/SDSS approach to efficiently proceed towards the largest homogeneously selected/observed sample of X-ray emitting AGN.     The soft X-ray properties of AGN from the CJF sample; A correlation analysis between soft X-ray and VLBI properties

    Context: We present the soft X-ray properties obtained in the ROSAT All-Sky survey and from pointed PSPC observations for the AGN in the complete flux-density limited Caltech-Jodrell Bank flat spectrum sample (hereafter CJF). CJF is a VLBI survey (VLBA observations at 5 GHz) of 293 AGN with detailed information on jet component motion. Aims: We investigate and discuss the soft X-ray properties of this AGN sample and examine the correlations between X-ray and VLBI properties, test beaming scenarios, and search for the discriminating properties between the sub-samples detected and not detected by ROSAT. Methods: Comparing the observed and the predicted X-ray fluxes by assuming an Inverse Compton (IC) origin for the observed X-rays, we compute the beaming or Doppler factor and contrast the Doppler factors with other beaming indicators derived from the VLBI observations, such as the value of the expansion velocity, and the observed and intrinsic brightness temperature. In addition, we investigate the large-scale radio structure of the AGN and the difference between the pc- and kpc-scale structure (misalignment) with regard to the X-ray observations.Results: We find a nearly linear relation between X-ray and radio luminosities, and a similar but less stringent behaviour for the relation between optical and X-ray luminosities. The quasars detected by ROSAT have a different βapp\beta_{\rm app}-redshift relationship compared to the non-detected ones. ROSAT-detected sources tend to reveal extended large-scale radio structures more often. Conclusions: We conclude that beaming alone cannot explain the observed dichotomy of ROSAT detection or non-detection and assume that the large-scale jet structure plays a decisive role

    A Functional Genomics Approach Identifies Candidate Effectors from the Aphid Species Myzus persicae (Green Peach Aphid)

    Aphids are amongst the most devastating sap-feeding insects of plants. Like most plant parasites, aphids require intimate associations with their host plants to gain access to nutrients. Aphid feeding induces responses such as clogging of phloem sieve elements and callose formation, which are suppressed by unknown molecules, probably proteins, in aphid saliva. Therefore, it is likely that aphids, like plant pathogens, deliver proteins (effectors) inside their hosts to modulate host cell processes, suppress plant defenses, and promote infestation. We exploited publicly available aphid salivary gland expressed sequence tags (ESTs) to apply a functional genomics approach for identification of candidate effectors from Myzus persicae (green peach aphid), based on common features of plant pathogen effectors. A total of 48 effector candidates were identified, cloned, and subjected to transient overexpression in Nicotiana benthamiana to assay for elicitation of a phenotype, suppression of the Pathogen-Associated Molecular Pattern (PAMP)–mediated oxidative burst, and effects on aphid reproductive performance. We identified one candidate effector, Mp10, which specifically induced chlorosis and local cell death in N. benthamiana and conferred avirulence to recombinant Potato virus X (PVX) expressing Mp10, PVX-Mp10, in N. tabacum, indicating that this protein may trigger plant defenses. The ubiquitin-ligase associated protein SGT1 was required for the Mp10-mediated chlorosis response in N. benthamiana. Mp10 also suppressed the oxidative burst induced by flg22, but not by chitin. Aphid fecundity assays revealed that in planta overexpression of Mp10 and Mp42 reduced aphid fecundity, whereas another effector candidate, MpC002, enhanced aphid fecundity. Thus, these results suggest that, although Mp10 suppresses flg22-triggered immunity, it triggers a defense response, resulting in an overall decrease in aphid performance in the fecundity assays. Overall, we identified aphid salivary proteins that share features with plant pathogen effectors and therefore may function as aphid effectors by perturbing host cellular processes

    Listeria monocytogenes Internalin B Activates Junctional Endocytosis to Accelerate Intestinal Invasion

    Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) uses InlA to invade the tips of the intestinal villi, a location at which cell extrusion generates a transient defect in epithelial polarity that exposes the receptor for InlA, E-cadherin, on the cell surface. As the dying cell is removed from the epithelium, the surrounding cells reorganize to form a multicellular junction (MCJ) that Lm exploits to find its basolateral receptor and invade. By examining individual infected villi using 3D-confocal imaging, we uncovered a novel role for the second major invasin, InlB, during invasion of the intestine. We infected mice intragastrically with isogenic strains of Lm that express or lack InlB and that have a modified InlA capable of binding murine E-cadherin and found that Lm lacking InlB invade the same number of villi but have decreased numbers of bacteria within each infected villus tip. We studied the mechanism of InlB action at the MCJs of polarized MDCK monolayers and find that InlB does not act as an adhesin, but instead accelerates bacterial internalization after attachment. InlB locally activates its receptor, c-Met, and increases endocytosis of junctional components, including E-cadherin. We show that MCJs are naturally more endocytic than other sites of the apical membrane, that endocytosis and Lm invasion of MCJs depends on functional dynamin, and that c-Met activation by soluble InlB or hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) increases MCJ endocytosis. Also, in vivo, InlB applied through the intestinal lumen increases endocytosis at the villus tips. Our findings demonstrate a two-step mechanism of synergy between Lm's invasins: InlA provides the specificity of Lm adhesion to MCJs at the villus tips and InlB locally activates c-Met to accelerate junctional endocytosis and bacterial invasion of the intestine

    An empirical assessment of the SERVQUAL scale

    The definition and measurement of service quality as a 5-dimensional construct, as in SERVQUAL, appears to suffer from a number of methodological shortcomings. A review of the potential problems and the findings from an empirical study are presented in this article. The findings suggest that the dimensionality of service quality may depend on the type of services under study. The use of mixed-item wording and the current operationalization of service quality on the basis of gap scores appear in the process of using SERVQUAL, the results of this study suggest to exercise caution. Suggestions are provided with implications for theory development and measurement in the service marketing area. © 1992

    Firm-level political behavior in theglobal marketplace

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the political behaviors which firms use to deal with the political imperatives associated with international markets. The overarching hypothesis was that as political imperatives baring foreign market access increase so too will firm-level political behaviors designed to reduce these imperatives. Using a mail questionnaire data collection format, 171 completed survey instruments were obtained from executive-level decision markers at major U.S. corporations. The results show that: (1) firms engage in political activities designed to reduce the effects of political imperatives in foreign markets, and (2) the emphasis placed on these activities differs significantly depending upon the political imperative in question. Firms facing high levels of foreign transfer restrictions emphasize foreign lobbying, political industry alliances, political inducements, and political action committees. Firms facing high levels of domestic transfer restrictions do not significantly emphasize political inducements, but add domestic lobbying, public relations, and friendships with U.S. government officials to the activities associated with foreign transfer restrictions.
