a type of speech in which ties of union are created by a mere exchange
of words.... They fulfil a social function and that is their
principal aim, but they are neither the result of intellectual reflection,
nor do they necessarily arouse reflection in the listener. Once again we may say that language does not function here as means of
transmission of thought.
This paper presents a possible approach to the analysis and use of the Spanish discourse marker bueno in everyday conversation. The analysis is part (and at the same time a result) of a project in which the functions of bueno are compared to those of well in English conversations. In this project English and Spanish discourse markers are being compared in order to find similarities and differences between their function and use in conversation. In this paper we do not try to reach definitive conclusions since the corpus needs to be extended and it is necessary to elaborate a framework in order to classify every occurrence of the different markers in a systematic [email protected]
Digital Storytelling and Multimodal Literacy in Education
This article argues in favour of using digital storytelling to encourage a critical socio-educational focus in education and include multimodal explicit teaching in the curriculum. The analysis of fifty digital stories indicates that the students developed a certain awareness of the issue chosen for their story (e.g. violence, racism, war) since the final product transmits a critical perspective on the topic itself. Further work, however, needs to be invested in the development of the digital story content itself and on the issue of multimodal learning, with especial emphasis on the interface between multimodal elements and more traditional modes of transmitting ideas.
Magnifying the ordinary: genre mixture and humour in the TV series 'Chuck'
Chuck is an American television series about a "normal" guy who works at the Buy More. His life changes dramatically when he becomes the most important person for the USA intelligence. This gives rise to a conflict between civilian and spy life. The analysis involves a multimodal account (cf. Lorenzo-Dus 2009) of the aesthetics (Cardwell 2005) of the second season that illustrates how the series establishes a parallelism between Chuck's life as a spy and that of his colleagues at the Buy More. By combining elements from different genres (Altman 1988) it portrays a rather "different from what may be the expected-representation" (Kress and van Leeuwen 2001:10) of the routine at the workplace (Armstrong 2005), thus depicting a rare humorous magnification of the ordinary life of a group of ordinary citizens with an ordinary job (cf. Beeden and Bruin 2011

Victim-Naming in the Murder Mystery Series Twin Peaks: A Corpus-Stylistic Study
Corpus linguistics is advancing rapidly in the study of a wide variety of genres but is still in its infancy in the study of TV series, a genre consumed daily by millions of viewers. Murder mystery series are one of the most popular and proliferous, but no studies, to date, have used corpus-stylistics methodologies in the analysis of the pivotal character of the victim in the whole narrative. This paper applies said methodology in the hope of shedding some light on the quantitative and qualitative relationship between the participation roles of the characters, and the frequency and distribution of victim-naming choices in the dialogue of the first two seasons of the acclaimed TV series Twin Peaks. The analysis proves that textual reference to the victim is a central genre-cohesive device which may serve as a waymark to guide the audience throughout the many subplots of the series
The objective of this article is twofold: firstly, to provide a critical review of an assortment of articles and web pages that report on the use of literary audio books, their contribution towards language learning, the way in which they promote children’s creativity and imagination and their role in contemporary children’s literature. Secondly, to bring in two innovative educational projects related to solidarity and civic and intercultural competences, which use audio books as a tool for language learning. The conclusions indicate that using audio books in primary education may have a positive impact on the learners, and help students improve their language competence and their literary skills.peerReviewe
This article provides a critical review of some of the most relevant studies on digital storytelling and proposes a genre typology that allows an initial classification of digital storytelling into two main types: educational and social. Digital storytelling is a multimodal emergent genre characterised by its versatility and flexibility which has resulted in a series of subgenres. However, the main premise here is that differentiating between social and educational– although one does not exclude the other– and bearing in mind that most digital stories may lie at the intersection of both, is the most useful way to start labeling the massive production of digital stories available nowadays on the Internet. The articles included in this number are mostly educational (Ramírez-Verdugo & Sotomayor Grande, and Reyes, Pich & García, Londoño-Monroy) but they all include some traces of the social type. Thus, Bou-Franch is an example of how students interpret certain events that had social impact and that are part of history while Westman’s article involves the creation of communities of practice among those who share the same interests. Finally, Herreros-Navarro, although educational in essence, describes a social act in which students intentionally choose a way to present their own identity to society using digital storytelling.
The tabloid talk show as Quasi-conversational type of face-to-face interaction
Abstract Media discourse, and in particular programmes such as talkshows, are certainly practices that have extended, enriched, and often taken to the limits, conversation as a speech event. The number of possibilities arising from conversational practice have certainly found a new dimension in the context of the mass media, and on TV in particular (cf. Vand
