On the iterated Crank-Nicolson for hyperbolic and parabolic equations in numerical relativity
The iterated Crank-Nicolson is a predictor-corrector algorithm commonly used
in numerical relativity for the solution of both hyperbolic and parabolic
partial differential equations. We here extend the recent work on the stability
of this scheme for hyperbolic equations by investigating the properties when
the average between the predicted and corrected values is made with unequal
weights and when the scheme is applied to a parabolic equation. We also propose
a variant of the scheme in which the coefficients in the averages are swapped
between two corrections leading to systematically larger amplification factors
and to a smaller numerical dispersion.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes
Test beam measurements at the test beam facilities of DESY have been
conducted to characterise the performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes
originally developed within the EUDET project. The beam telescopes are equipped
with six sensor planes using MIMOSA26 monolithic active pixel devices. A
programmable Trigger Logic Unit provides trigger logic and time stamp
information on particle passage. Both data acquisition framework and offline
reconstruction software packages are available. User devices are easily
integrable into the data acquisition framework via predefined interfaces.
The biased residual distribution is studied as a function of the beam energy,
plane spacing and sensor threshold. Its standard deviation at the two centre
pixel planes using all six planes for tracking in a 6\,GeV
electron/positron-beam is measured to be
(2.88\,\pm\,0.08)\,\upmu\meter.Iterative track fits using the formalism of
General Broken Lines are performed to estimate the intrinsic resolution of the
individual pixel planes. The mean intrinsic resolution over the six sensors
used is found to be (3.24\,\pm\,0.09)\,\upmu\meter.With a 5\,GeV
electron/positron beam, the track resolution halfway between the two inner
pixel planes using an equidistant plane spacing of 20\,mm is estimated to
(1.83\,\pm\,0.03)\,\upmu\meter assuming the measured intrinsic resolution.
Towards lower beam energies the track resolution deteriorates due to increasing
multiple scattering. Threshold studies show an optimal working point of the
MIMOSA26 sensors at a sensor threshold of between five and six times their RMS
noise. Measurements at different plane spacings are used to calibrate the
amount of multiple scattering in the material traversed and allow for
corrections to the predicted angular scattering for electron beams
Experimental Quantum Cryptography with Qutrits
We produce two identical keys using, for the first time, entangled trinary
quantum systems (qutrits) for quantum key distribution. The advantage of
qutrits over the normally used binary quantum systems is an increased coding
density and a higher security margin. The qutrits are encoded into the orbital
angular momentum of photons, namely Laguerre-Gaussian modes with azimuthal
index l +1, 0 and -1, respectively. The orbital angular momentum is controlled
with phase holograms. In an Ekert-type protocol the violation of a
three-dimensional Bell inequality verifies the security of the generated keys.
A key is obtained with a qutrit error rate of approximately 10 %.Comment: New version includes additional references and a few minor changes to

A Period and a Prediction for the Of?p Spectrum Alternator HD 191612
The observational picture of the enigmatic O-type spectrum variable HD191612
has been sharpened substantially. A symmetrical, low-amplitude light curve with
a period near 540 d has recently been reported from Hipparcos photometry. This
period satisfies all of the spectroscopy since at least 1982, including
extensive new observations during 2003 and 2004, and it has predicted the next
transition during September--October 2004. Measurements of the H alpha
equivalent width reveal a sharp emission peak in the phase diagram, in contrast
to the apparently sinusoidal light curve. The He II absorption-line strength is
essentially constant, while He I varies strongly, possibly filled in by
emission in the O6 state, thus producing the apparent spectral-type variations.
The O8 state appears to be the "normal" one. Two intermediate O7 observations
have been obtained, which fall at the expected phases, but these are the only
modern observations of the transitions so far. The period is too long for
rotation or pulsation; although there is no direct evidence as yet for a
companion, a model in which tidally induced oscillations drive an enhanced wind
near periastron of an eccentric orbit appears promising. Further observations
during the now predictable transitions may provide a critical test. Ultraviolet
and X-ray observations during both states will likely also prove illuminating.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; scheduled for the 2004 December 10 issue

Cost-Effective Use of Silver Dressings for the Treatment of Hard-to-Heal Chronic Venous Leg Ulcers
Aim
To estimate the cost-effectiveness of silver dressings using a health economic model based on time-to-wound-healing in hard-to-heal chronic venous leg ulcers (VLUs).
Background
Chronic venous ulceration affects 1–3% of the adult population and typically has a protracted course of healing, resulting in considerable costs to the healthcare system. The pathogenesis of VLUs includes excessive and prolonged inflammation which is often related to critical colonisation and early infection. The use of silver dressings to control this bioburden and improve wound healing rates remains controversial.
Methods
A decision tree was constructed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of treatment with silver compared with non-silver dressings for four weeks in a primary care setting. The outcomes: ‘Healed ulcer’, ‘Healing ulcer’ or ‘No improvement’ were developed, reflecting the relative reduction in ulcer area from baseline to four weeks of treatment. A data set from a recent meta-analysis, based on four RCTs, was applied to the model.
Results
Treatment with silver dressings for an initial four weeks was found to give a total cost saving (£141.57) compared with treatment with non-silver dressings. In addition, patients treated with silver dressings had a faster wound closure compared with those who had been treated with non-silver dressings.
Conclusion
The use of silver dressings improves healing time and can lead to overall cost savings. These results can be used to guide healthcare decision makers in evaluating the economic aspects of treatment with silver dressings in hard-to-heal chronic VLUs
Limit on suppression of ionization in metastable neon traps due to long-range anisotropy
This paper investigates the possibility of suppressing the ionization rate in
a magnetostatic trap of metastable neon atoms by spin-polarizing the atoms.
Suppression of the ionization is critical for the possibility of reaching
Bose-Einstein condensation with such atoms. We estimate the relevant long-range
interactions for the system, consisting of electric quadrupole-quadrupole and
dipole-induced dipole terms, and develop short-range potentials based on the
Na_2 singlet and triplet potentials. The auto-ionization widths of the system
are also calculated. With these ingredients we calculate the ionization rate
for spin-polarized and for spin-isotropic samples, caused by anisotropy of the
long-range interactions. We find that spin-polarization may allow for four
orders of magnitude suppression of the ionization rate for Ne. The results
depend sensitively on a precise knowledge of the interaction potentials,
however, pointing out the need for experimental input. The same model gives a
suppression ratio close to unity for metastable xenon in accordance with
experimental results, due to a much increased anisotropy in this case.Comment: 15 pages including figures, LaTex/RevTex, uses epsfig.st
Probabilistic instantaneous quantum computation
The principle of teleportation can be used to perform a quantum computation
even before its quantum input is defined. The basic idea is to perform the
quantum computation at some earlier time with qubits which are part of an
entangled state. At a later time a generalized Bell state measurement is
performed jointly on the then defined actual input qubits and the rest of the
entangled state. This projects the output state onto the correct one with a
certain exponentially small probability. The sufficient conditions are found
under which the scheme is of benefit.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Violations of Bell Inequalities for Measurements with Macroscopic Uncertainties: What does it Mean to Violate Macroscopic Local Realism?
We suggest to test the premise of ``macroscopic local realism'' which is
sufficient to derive Bell inequalities when measurements of photon number are
only accurate to an uncertainty of order photons, where is macroscopic.
Macroscopic local realism is only sufficient to imply, in the context of the
original Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen argument, fuzzy ``elements of reality'' which
have a macroscopic indeterminacy. We show therefore how the violation of local
realism in the presence of macroscopic uncertainties implies the failure of
``macroscopic local realism''. Quantum states violating this macroscopic local
realism are presented.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures- new version is unchanged but tightened-20 pages,
