Pancreaticoduodenal transplantation in humans
Whole cadaveric pancreata were transplanted to the pelvic extraperitoneal location in four patients with diabetes who previously had undergone successful cadaveric renal transplantation. One graft was lost within a few hours from venous thrombosis but with patient survival. The other three are providing normal endocrine function after two and a half, 11 and 12 months. The exocrine pancreatic secretions were drained into the recipient jejunum through enteric anastomoses. Because mucosal slough of the graft and duodenum and jejunum in two patients caused a protein losing enteropathy and necessitated reoperations, we now do the pancreatic transplantation with only a blister of graft duodenum large enough for side-to-side enteroenterostomy. The spleen has been transplanted with the pancreas mainly for technical reasons, and this technique should have further trials in spite of the fact that delayed graft splenectomy became necessary in two recipients to treat graft induced hematologic complications
Biases in Virial Black Hole Masses: An SDSS Perspective
We compile black hole (BH) masses for quasars in the redshift
range included in the Fifth Data Release of the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), using virial BH mass estimators based on the
\hbeta, \MgII, and \CIV emission lines. We find that: (1) within our sample,
the widths of the three lines follow log-normal distributions, with means and
dispersions that do not depend strongly on luminosity or redshift;(2) the
\MgII- and \hbeta-estimated BH masses are consistent with one another; and (3)
the \CIV BH mass estimator may be more severely affected by a disk wind
component than the \MgII and \hbeta estimators, giving a positive bias in mass
correlated with the \CIV-\MgII blueshift. Most SDSS quasars have virial BH
masses in the range . There is a clear upper mass limit of
for active BHs at , decreasing at lower
redshifts. Making the reasonable assumptions that the underlying BH mass
distribution decreases with mass and that the Eddington ratio distribution at
fixed BH mass has non-zero width, we show that the measured virial BH mass
distribution and Eddington ratio distribution are subject to Malmquist bias. A
radio quasar subsample (with ) has mean virial BH
mass larger by dex than the whole sample. A broad absorption line
(BAL) quasar subsample (with ) has identical virial

Near-infrared spectroscopy in NGC 7538
The characterisation of the stellar population toward young high-mass
star-forming regions allows to constrain fundamental cluster properties like
distance and age. These are essential when using high-mass clusters as probes
to conduct Galactic studies. NGC 7538 is a star-forming region with an embedded
stellar population only unearthed in the near-infrared. We present the first
near-infrared spectro-photometric study of the candidate high-mass stellar
content in NGC 7538. We obtained H and K spectra of 21 sources with both the
multi-object and long-slit modes of LIRIS at the WHT, and complement these data
with sub-arcsecond JHKs photometry of the region using the imaging mode of the
same instrument. We find a wide variety of objects within the studied stellar
population of NGC 7538. Our results discriminate between a stellar population
associated to the HII region, but not contained within its extent, and several
pockets of more recent star formation. We report the detection of CO bandhead
emission toward several sources as well as other features indicative of a young
stellar nature. We infer a spectro-photometric distance of 2.7+-0.5 kpc, an age
spread in the range 0.5-2.2 Myr and a total mass ~1.7x10^3 Msun for the older

Doping dependent charge order correlations in electron-doped cuprates
Understanding the interplay between charge order (CO) and other phenomena
(e.g. pseudogap, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity) is one of the
central questions in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The
discovery that similar forms of CO exist in both hole- and electron-doped
cuprates opened a path to determine what subset of the CO phenomenology is
universal to all the cuprates. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to
measure the charge order correlations in electron-doped cuprates (La2-xCexCuO4
and Nd2-xCexCuO4) and their relationship to antiferromagnetism, pseudogap, and
superconductivity. Detailed measurements of Nd2-xCexCuO4 show that CO is
present in the x = 0.059 to 0.166 range, and that its doping dependent
wavevector is consistent with the separation between straight segments of the
Fermi surface. The CO onset temperature is highest between x = 0.106 and 0.166,
but decreases at lower doping levels, indicating that it is not tied to the
appearance of antiferromagnetic correlations or the pseudogap. Near optimal
doping, where the CO wavevector is also consistent with a previously observed
phonon anomaly, measurements of the CO below and above the superconducting
transition temperature, or in a magnetic field, show that the CO is insensitive
to superconductivity. Overall these findings indicate that, while verified in
the electron-doped cuprates, material-dependent details determine whether the
CO correlations acquire sufficient strength to compete for the ground state of

Establishing comprehensive oral assessments for children with safeguarding concerns.
The dental profession is well placed to contribute important information in child protection cases but no previous research has been reported that assesses the volume or impact of this information. Comprehensive oral assessment clinics were introduced and established as an integral part of comprehensive medical assessments for children with welfare concerns in Greater Glasgow and Clyde. An assessment protocol and standardised paperwork for comprehensive oral assessments were developed to enhance information sharing and patient access to appropriate care. Two cases are presented and discussed to demonstrate the value of dental input
Liver transplantation for type I and type IV glycogen storage disease
Progressive liver failure or hepatic complications of the primary disease led to orthotopic liver transplantation in eight children with glycogen storage disease over a 9-year period. One patient had glycogen storage disease (GSD) type I (von Gierke disease) and seven patients had type IV GSD (Andersen disease). As previously reported [19], a 16.5-year-old-girl with GSD type I was successfully treated in 1982 by orthotopic liver transplantation under cyclosporine and steroid immunosuppression. The metabolic consequences of the disease have been eliminated, the renal function and size have remained normal, and the patient has lived a normal young adult life. A late portal venous thrombosis was treated successfully with a distal splenorenal shunt. Orthotopic liver transplantation was performed in seven children with type N GSD who had progressive hepatic failure. Two patients died early from technical complications. The other five have no evidence of recurrent hepatic amylopectinosis after 1.1–5.8 postoperative years. They have had good physical and intellectual maturation. Amylopectin was found in many extrahepatic tissues prior to surgery, but cardiopathy and skeletal myopathy have not developed after transplantation. Postoperative heart biopsies from patients showed either minimal amylopectin deposits as long as 4.5 years following transplantation or a dramatic reduction in sequential biopsies from one patient who initially had dense myocardial deposits. Serious hepatic derangement is seen most commonly in types T and IV GSD. Liver transplantation cures the hepatic manifestations of both types. The extrahepatic deposition of abnormal glycogen appears not to be problematic in type I disease, and while potentially more threatening in type IV disease, may actually exhibit signs of regression after hepatic allografting
Nonexistence of self-similar singularities for the 3D incompressible Euler equations
We prove that there exists no self-similar finite time blowing up solution to
the 3D incompressible Euler equations. By similar method we also show
nonexistence of self-similar blowing up solutions to the divergence-free
transport equation in . This result has direct applications to the
density dependent Euler equations, the Boussinesq system, and the
quasi-geostrophic equations, for which we also show nonexistence of

Iron, silicate, and light co-limitation of three Southern Ocean diatom species
The effect of combined iron, silicate, and light co-limitation was investigated in the three diatom species Actinocyclus sp. Ehrenberg, Chaetoceros dichaeta Ehrenberg, and Chaetoceros debilis Cleve, isolated from the Southern Ocean (SO). Growth of all species was co-limited by iron and silicate, reflected in a significant increase in the number of cell divisions compared to the control. Lowest relative Si uptake and drastic frustule malformation was found under iron and silicate co-limitation in C. dichaeta, while Si limitation in general caused cell elongation in both Chaetoceros species. Higher light intensities similar to SO surface conditions showed a negative impact on growth of C. dichaeta and Actinocyclus sp. and no effect on C. debilis. This is in contrast to the assumed light limitation of SO diatoms due to deep wind driven mixing.
