Spatio-temporal pattern of viral meningitis in Michigan, 1993-2001
To characterize Michiganâs high viral meningitis incidence rates, 8,803 cases from 1993â2001 were analyzed for standard epidemiological indices, geographic distribution, and spatio-temporal clusters. Blacks and infants were found to be high-risk groups. Annual seasonality and interannual variability in epidemic magnitude were apparent. Cases were concentrated in southern Michigan, and cumulative incidence was correlated with population density at the county level (r=0.45, p<0.001). Kulldorffâs Scan test identified the occurrence of spatio-temporal clusters in Lower Michigan during JulyâOctober 1998 and 2001 (p=0.01). More extensive data on cases, laboratory isolates, sociodemographics, and environmental exposures should improve detection and enhance the effectiveness of a Space-Time Information System aimed at prevention.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47932/1/10109_2005_Article_151.pd
The Physical Conditions of a Lensed Star-forming Galaxy at z=1.7
We report rest-frame optical Keck/NIRSPEC spectroscopy of the bright lensed
galaxy RCSGA 032727-132609 at z=1.7037. From precise measurements of the
nebular lines, we infer a number of physical properties: redshift, extinction,
star formation rate, ionization parameter, electron density, electron
temperature, oxygen abundance, and N/O, Ne/O, and Ar/O abundance ratios. The
limit on [O III]~4363 A tightly constrains the oxygen abundance via the
"direct" or electron temperature method, for the first time in an
average-metallicity galaxy at z~2. We compare this result to several standard
"bright-line" O abundance diagnostics, thereby testing these
empirically-calibrated diagnostics in situ. Finally, we explore the positions
of lensed and unlensed galaxies in standard diagnostic diagrams, and explore
the diversity of ionization conditions and mass--metallicity ratios at z=2.Comment: ApJ in press. 15 pages, 7 figure

Guillain-BarrĂ© Syndrome, Influenza Vaccination, and Antecedent Respiratory and Gastrointestinal Infections: A Case-Centered Analysis in the Vaccine Safety Datalink, 2009â2011
Background: Guillain-BarrĂ© Syndrome (GBS) can be triggered by gastrointestinal or respiratory infections, including influenza. During the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in the United States, monovalent inactivated influenza vaccine (MIV) availability coincided with high rates of wildtype influenza infections. Several prior studies suggested an elevated GBS risk following MIV, but adjustment for antecedent infection was limited. Methods: We identified patients enrolled in health plans participating in the Vaccine Safety Datalink and diagnosed with GBS from July 2009 through June 2011. Medical records of GBS cases with 2009â10 MIV, 2010â11 trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV), and/or a medically-attended respiratory or gastrointestinal infection in the 1 through 141 days prior to GBS diagnosis were reviewed and classified according to Brighton Collaboration criteria for diagnostic certainty. Using a case-centered design, logistic regression models adjusted for patient-level time-varying sources of confounding, including seasonal vaccinations and infections in GBS cases and population-level controls. Results: Eighteen confirmed GBS cases received vaccination in the 6 weeks preceding onset, among 1.27 million 2009â10 MIV recipients and 2.80 million 2010â11 TIV recipients. Forty-four confirmed GBS cases had infection in the 6 weeks preceding onset, among 3.77 million patients diagnosed with medically-attended infection. The observed-versus-expected odds that 2009â10 MIV/2010â11 TIV was received in the 6 weeks preceding GBS onset was odds ratio = 1.54, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.59â3.99; risk difference = 0.93 per million doses, 95% CI, â0.71â5.16. The association between GBS and medically-attended infection was: odds ratio = 7.73, 95% CI, 3.60â16.61; risk difference = 11.62 per million infected patients, 95% CI, 4.49â26.94. These findings were consistent in sensitivity analyses using alternative infection definitions and risk intervals for prior vaccination shorter than 6 weeks. Conclusions: After adjusting for antecedent infections, we found no evidence for an elevated GBS risk following 2009â10 MIV/2010â11 TIV influenza vaccines. However, the association between GBS and antecedent infection was strongly elevated

Genomic Profiling of Childhood Tumor Patient-Derived Xenograft Models to Enable Rational Clinical Trial Design.
Accelerating cures for children with cancer remains an immediate challenge as a result of extensive oncogenic heterogeneity between and within histologies, distinct molecular mechanisms evolving between diagnosis and relapsed disease, and limited therapeutic options. To systematically prioritize and rationally test novel agents in preclinical murine models, researchers within the Pediatric Preclinical Testing Consortium are continuously developing patient-derived xenografts (PDXs)-many of which are refractory to current standard-of-care treatments-from high-risk childhood cancers. Here, we genomically characterize 261 PDX models from 37 unique pediatric cancers; demonstrate faithful recapitulation of histologies and subtypes; and refine our understanding of relapsed disease. In addition, we use expression signatures to classify tumors for TP53 and NF1 pathway inactivation. We anticipate that these data will serve as a resource for pediatric oncology drug development and will guide rational clinical trial design for children with cancer
Test of octupole coupled 5- state in 146Nd using proton inelastic scattering
The inelastic scattering of 35 MeV protons has been used to excite seven states below 2.1 MeV in 146Nd. A comparison between a coupled-channels calculation that assumes an octupole coupled structure for the 5- state at 1.517 MeV and the observed cross section suggests that the wave function of this state includes only a small two-quasiparticle component. In addition, the present results indicate that the level at 2.073 MeV, previously assigned JÏ=4-, actually has JÏ=3-
Habits of Mind: Designing Courses for Student Success
Although content knowledge remains at the heart of college teaching and learning, forward-thinking instructors recognize that we must also provide 21st-century college students with transferable skills (sometimes called portable intellectual abilities) to prepare them for their futures (Vazquez, 2020; Ritchhart, 2015; Venezia & Jaeger, 2013; Hazard, 2012). To âgrow their capacity as efficacious thinkers to navigate and thrive in the face of unprecedented changeâ (Costa et al., 2023), students must learn and improve important study skills and academic dispositions throughout their educational careers. If we do not focus on skills-building in college courses, students will not be prepared for the challenges that await them after they leave institutions of higher education. If students are not prepared for these postsecondary education challenges, then it is fair to say that college faculty have failed them
National Outbreak of Salmonella Serotype Saintpaul Infections: Importance of Texas Restaurant Investigations in Implicating Jalapeño Peppers
BACKGROUND: In May 2008, PulseNet detected a multistate outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Saintpaul infections. Initial investigations identified an epidemiologic association between illness and consumption of raw tomatoes, yet cases continued. In mid-June, we investigated two clusters of outbreak strain infections in Texas among patrons of Restaurant A and two establishments of Restaurant Chain B to determine the outbreak's source. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted independent case-control studies of Restaurant A and B patrons. Patients were matched to well controls by meal date. We conducted restaurant environmental investigations and traced the origin of implicated products. Forty-seven case-patients and 40 controls were enrolled in the Restaurant A study. Thirty case-patients and 31 controls were enrolled in the Restaurant Chain B study. In both studies, illness was independently associated with only one menu item, fresh salsa (Restaurant A: matched odds ratio [mOR], 37; 95% confidence interval [CI], 7.2-386; Restaurant B: mOR, 13; 95% CI 1.3-infinity). The only ingredient in common between the two salsas was raw jalapeño peppers. Cultures of jalapeño peppers collected from an importer that supplied Restaurant Chain B and serrano peppers and irrigation water from a Mexican farm that supplied that importer with jalapeño and serrano peppers grew the outbreak strain. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Jalapeño peppers, contaminated before arrival at the restaurants and served in uncooked fresh salsas, were the source of these infections. Our investigations, critical in understanding the broader multistate outbreak, exemplify an effective approach to investigating large foodborne outbreaks.
