Data exploration systems for databases
Data exploration systems apply machine learning techniques, multivariate statistical methods, information theory, and database theory to databases to identify significant relationships among the data and summarize information. The result of applying data exploration systems should be a better understanding of the structure of the data and a perspective of the data enabling an analyst to form hypotheses for interpreting the data. This paper argues that data exploration systems need a minimum amount of domain knowledge to guide both the statistical strategy and the interpretation of the resulting patterns discovered by these systems
Core Stability and Athletic Performance in Male and Female Lacrosse Players
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1138-1148, 2019. This study determined the relationship of core stability with power production, agility, and dynamic stability of collegiate lacrosse players and whether core stability is more evident in these performance variables in either males or females. Twenty male and female collegiate lacrosse players (20.3 ± 1.0 years, 173.2 ± 11.8 cm, 72.6 ± 13.0 kg) performed the pro-agility shuttle, the countermovement jump (CMJ), the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), and prone, right lateral, and left lateral planks on two sessions- familiarization and testing. Independent T-tests were used to compare sexes. SPSS 24.0 was used; significance was accepted at p\u3c 0.05. Pearson correlations were used to compare the relationship of core stability to the performance variables in participants. There was a significant relationship found between the prone plank and pro-agility shuttle in all participants (r = -0.50). No significant relationships were found between core stability and performance variables. A significant difference was found in the pro-agility shuttle (p= 0.001) and the CMJ (p= 0.001) but not in core stability or dynamic stability. Agility, power production, and dynamic stability were not related to core stability in neither male or female lacrosse players. There were no significant differences in core stability and dynamic stability between males and females. A significant difference was found in dynamic stability in the SEBT right leg and left leg composite scores between sexes. From these results, it is suggested that core stability may not directly influence the performance variables in collegiate male and female lacrosse players
Prediction of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection using comprehensive electronic medical records in an integrated healthcare delivery system
BACKGROUNDPredicting recurrentClostridium difficileinfection (rCDI) remains difficult. METHODS. We employed a retrospective cohort design. Granular electronic medical record (EMR) data had been collected from patients hospitalized at 21 Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals. The derivation dataset (2007–2013) included data from 9,386 patients who experienced incident CDI (iCDI) and 1,311 who experienced their first CDI recurrences (rCDI). The validation dataset (2014) included data from 1,865 patients who experienced incident CDI and 144 who experienced rCDI. Using multiple techniques, including machine learning, we evaluated more than 150 potential predictors. Our final analyses evaluated 3 models with varying degrees of complexity and 1 previously published model.RESULTSDespite having a large multicenter cohort and access to granular EMR data (eg, vital signs, and laboratory test results), none of the models discriminated well (c statistics, 0.591–0.605), had good calibration, or had good explanatory power.CONCLUSIONSOur ability to predict rCDI remains limited. Valuing Transgenic Cotton Technologies Using a Risk/Return Framework
Stochastic Efficiency with Respect to a Function (SERF) is used to rank transgenic cotton technology groups and place an upper and lower bound on their value. Yield and production data from replicated plot experiments are used to build cumulative distribution functions of returns for nontransgenic, Roundup Ready, Bollgard, and stacked gene cotton cultivars. The Shape of an Accretion Disc in a Misaligned Black Hole Binary
We model the overall shape of an accretion disc in a semi-detached binary
system in which mass is transfered on to a spinning black hole the spin axis of
which is misaligned with the orbital rotation axis. We assume the disc is in a
steady state. Its outer regions are subject to differential precession caused
by tidal torques of the companion star. These tend to align the outer parts of
the disc with the orbital plane. Its inner regions are subject to differential
precession caused by the Lense-Thirring effect. These tend to align the inner
parts of the disc with the spin of the black hole. We give full numerical
solutions for the shape of the disc for some particular disc parameters. We
then show how an analytic approximation to these solutions can be obtained for
the case when the disc surface density varies as a power law with radius. These
analytic solutions for the shape of the disc are reasonably accurate even for
large misalignments and can be simply applied for general disc parameters. They
are particularly useful when the numerical solutions would be slow.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
IgG4 antibodies to the recombinant filarial antigen Wb-Bhp-1 decrease dramatically following treatment of lymphatic filariasis
BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease and a major cause of chronic disability. Improved diagnostic tests are needed because of long-term persistence of anti-filarial antibodies or circulating filarial antigenemia after treatments that clear microfilaremia. Here, we assess changes in levels of antibodies to the recombinant filarial antigens Wb-Bhp-1, Wb123, and Bm14 after anti-filarial treatment.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: IgG4 antibodies to recombinant filarial antigens were assessed by ELISA. We tested serial plasma samples from a clinical trial in Papua New Guinea. Before treatment, 90%, 71% and 99% of participants had antibodies to Wb-Bhp-1, Wb123, and Bm14, respectively. Antibodies to Wb-Bhp-1 and Wb123, but not Bm14, were significantly higher in participants with persistent microfilaremia 24 months after treatment. Antibodies to all three antigens declined significantly by 60 months after treatment with ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine and albendazole despite circulating filarial antigen in 76% of participants. By 60 months follow up, antibodies to Wb-Bhp-1, Wb123, and Bm14 were detected in 17%, 7% and 90% of participants, respectively. Antibodies to Wb-Bhp-1 also declined more rapidly after treatment than antibodies to Bm14 in samples from a clinical trial conducted in Sri Lanka. We also tested archived serum samples from people living in filariasis-endemic communities in Egypt with different infection profiles. Antibodies to Wb-Bhp-1 were detected in 73% of microfilaremic people, 53% of amicrofilaremic people with circulating filarial antigen, and 17.5% of endemic individuals without microfilaria or circulating filarial antigen. Tests performed with legacy samples from India showed that few people with filarial lymphedema had antibodies to these recombinant antigens.
CONCLUSIONS: Antibodies to Wb-Bhp-1 and Wb123 are more closely correlated with persistent microfilaremia than circulating filarial antigenemia or antibodies to Bm14, and they clear more rapidly after anti-filarial treatment. Additional studies are needed to assess the value of Wb-Bhp-1 serology as a tool for determining the success of LF elimination efforts

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a human-specific pathogen that evades the host immune response through the elaboration of multiple virulence factors. Although many of these factors have been studied, numerous proteins encoded by the GAS genome are of unknown function. Herein, we characterize a biomimetic red blood cell (RBC)-captured protein of unknown function-annotated subsequently as S protein-in GAS pathophysiology. S protein maintains the hydrophobic properties of GAS, and its absence reduces survival in human blood. S protein facilitates GAS coating with lysed RBCs to promote molecular mimicry, which increases virulence in vitro and in vivo. Proteomic profiling reveals that the removal of S protein from GAS alters cellular and extracellular protein landscapes and is accompanied by a decrease in the abundance of several key GAS virulence determinants. In vivo, the absence of S protein results in a striking attenuation of virulence and promotes a robust immune response and immunological memory
Supernova Kicks and Misaligned Microquasars
The low-mass X-ray binary microquasar GRO J1655-40 is observed to have a
misalignment between the jets and the binary orbital plane. Since the current
black hole spin axis is likely to be parallel to the jets, this implies a
misalignment between the spin axis of the black hole and the binary orbital
plane. It is likely the black holes formed with an asymmetric supernova which
caused the orbital axis to misalign with the spin of the stars. We ask whether
the null hypothesis that the supernova explosion did not affect the spin axis
of the black hole can be ruled out by what can be deduced about the properties
of the explosion from the known system parameters. We find that this null
hypothesis cannot be disproved but we find that the most likely requirements to
form the system include a small natal black hole kick (of a few tens of km/s)
and a relatively wide pre-supernova binary. In such cases the observed close
binary system could have formed by tidal circularisation without a common
