The origins of nuclear astrophysics at Caltech

    Get PDF
Shortly before the start of World War II, several theoretical physicists, including Hans Bethe and Carl von Weizsacker, advanced the idea that the sun derives it energy from nuclear reactions within its core. C. C. Lauritsen and William Fowler, nuclear physicists at Caltech's Kellogg Laboratory, were among the first experimentalists to appreciate the application of nuclear physics to stellar interiors. Post-war strategies for studying nuclear processes in the stars included an innovative series of unofficial, weekly seminars with Mt. Wilson astronomers at director Ira Bowen's house, the testing of Bethe's carbon cycle in Kellogg, and the collaboration with a diverse group of scientists ranging from cosmologist Fred Hoyle to astronomers Margaret and Geoffrey Burbidge. The events leading up to the publication of the 1957 paper by Fowler, Hoyle, Burbidge, and Burbidge, in The Reviews of Modern Physics, now regarded as a watershed in the history of nuclear astrophysics, are discussed. For his work in low-energy nuclear astrophysics, Fowler won the 1983 Nobel Prize in physics

Query Expansion of Zero-Hit Subject Searches: Using a Thesaurus in Conjunction with NLP Techniques

    Get PDF
The focus of our study is zero-hit queries in keyword subject searches and the effort of increasing recall in these cases by reformulating and, then, expanding the initial queries using an external source of knowledge, namely a thesaurus. To this end, the objectives of this study are twofold. First, we perform the mapping of query terms to the thesaurus terms. Second, we use the matched terms to expand the user’s initial query by taking advantage of the thesaurus relations and implementing natural language processing (NLP) techniques. We report on the overall procedure and elaborate on key points and considerations of each step of the process

Entanglement and statistics in Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry

    Get PDF
Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry allows one to detect the presence of entanglement in two-photon input states. The same result holds for two-particles input states which obey to Fermionic statistics. In the latter case however anti-bouncing introduces qualitative differences in the interferometer response. This effect is analyzed in a Gedankenexperiment where the particles entering the interferometer are assumed to belong to a one-parameter family of quons which continuously interpolate between the Bosonic and Fermionic statistics.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; minor editorial changes and new references adde

The size and polydispersity of silica nanoparticles under simulated hot spring conditions

    Get PDF
The nucleation and growth of silica nanoparticles in supersaturated geothermal waters was simulated using a flow-through geothermal simulator system. The effect of silica concentration ([SiO2]), ionic strength (IS), temperature (T) and organic additives on the size and polydispersity of the forming silica nanoparticles was quantified. A decrease in temperature (58 to 33°C) and the addition of glucose restricted particle growth to sizes <20 nm, while varying [SiO2] or ISdid not affect the size (30-35 nm) and polydispersity (±9 nm) observed at 58°C. Conversely, the addition of xanthan gum induced the development of thin films that enhanced silica aggregation

Notes on a New Dialectology of Montenegrin

The paper presents some observations on the first post-Yugoslav handbook of dialectology focusing on Montenegrin (Čirgić 2017), which sets criteria for identifying the diacritic features of Montenegrin Štokavian. In contrast to Yugoslav-era treatments of the Štokavian dialect (e.g. Ivić 1958, Peco 1985), the new handbook individuates Montenegrin and presents it as an organic whole, rather than examining its relationship to the broader South Slavic dialectological context. The task is challenging, given that there are two distinct dialect areas of Montenegrin. The trend towards describing former-Yugoslav dialect areas in alignment with the new state formations has been noted for Lisac’s handbook (Lisac 2003; Greenberg 2004). Greenberg, Marc L. 2004.
