Formation of laser plasma channels in a stationary gas
The formation of plasma channels with nonuniformity of about +- 3.5% has been
demonstrated. The channels had a density of 1.2x10^19 cm-3 with a radius of 15
um and with length >= 2.5 mm. The channels were formed by 0.3 J, 100 ps laser
pulses in a nonflowing gas, contained in a cylindrical chamber. The laser beam
passed through the chamber along its axis via pinholes in the chamber walls. A
plasma channel with an electron density on the order of 10^18 - 10^19 cm-3 was
formed in pure He, N2, Ar, and Xe. A uniform channel forms at proper time
delays and in optimal pressure ranges, which depend on the sort of gas. The
influence of the interaction of the laser beam with the gas leaking out of the
chamber through the pinholes was found insignificant. However, the formation of
an ablative plasma on the walls of the pinholes by the wings of the radial
profile of the laser beam plays an important role in the plasma channel
formation and its uniformity. A low current glow discharge initiated in the
chamber slightly improves the uniformity of the plasma channel, while a high
current arc discharge leads to the formation of overdense plasma near the front
pinhole and further refraction of the laser beam. The obtained results show the

Pairwise wave interactions in ideal polytropic gases
We consider the problem of resolving all pairwise interactions of shock
waves, contact waves, and rarefaction waves in 1-dimensional flow of an ideal
polytropic gas. Resolving an interaction means here to determine the types of
the three outgoing (backward, contact, and forward) waves in the Riemann
problem defined by the extreme left and right states of the two incoming waves,
together with possible vacuum formation. This problem has been considered by
several authors and turns out to be surprisingly involved. For each type of
interaction (head-on, involving a contact, or overtaking) the outcome depends
on the strengths of the incoming waves. In the case of overtaking waves the
type of the reflected wave also depends on the value of the adiabatic constant.
Our analysis provides a complete breakdown and gives the exact outcome of each

Strategic Outsourcing: Evidence from the British Companies
Outsourcing has become an increasingly popular option for many organisations. But they vary in terms of activities being outsourced, reasons for and benefits from outsourcing, and how the decision was made. This article presents an empirical research on fourteen companies. It found out, a) in most cases it was the ‘peripheral’ support activity being outsourced with cost reduction as the primary driver; b) outsourcing decision was being made early in the process without active involvement of the in-house provider; and c) there were problems in supplier selection and management. The research identified pre-outsourcing decision process and post-outsourcing management as the two key areas that gave cause for concern, and offered recommendations for improvement
The chameleon groups of Richard J. Thompson: automorphisms and dynamics
The automorphism groups of several of Thompson's countable groups of
piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the line and circle are computed and it is
shown that the outer automorphism groups of these groups are relatively small.
These results can be interpreted as stability results for certain structures of
PL functions on the circle. Machinery is developed to relate the structures on
the circle to corresponding structures on the line
Regional differences in the coupling between resting cerebral blood flow and metabolism may indicate action preparedness as a default state.
Although most functional neuroimaging studies examine task effects, interest intensifies in the "default" resting brain. Resting conditions show consistent regional activity, yet oxygen extraction fraction constancy across regions. We compared resting cerebral metabolic rates of glucose (CMRgl) measured with 18F-labeled 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose to cerebral blood flow (CBF) 15O-H2O measures, using the same positron emission tomography scanner in 2 samples (n = 60 and 30) of healthy right-handed adults. Region to whole-brain ratios were calculated for 35 standard regions of interest, and compared between CBF and CMRgl to determine perfusion relative to metabolism. Primary visual and auditory areas showed coupling between CBF and CMRgl, limbic and subcortical regions--basal ganglia, thalamus and posterior fossa structures--were hyperperfused, whereas association cortices were hypoperfused. Hyperperfusion was higher in left than right hemisphere for most cortical and subcallosal limbic regions, but symmetric in cingulate, basal ganglia and somatomotor regions. Hyperperfused regions are perhaps those where activation is anticipated at short notice, whereas downstream cortical modulatory regions have longer "lead times" for deployment. The novel observation of systematic uncoupling of CBF and CMRgl may help elucidate the potential biological significance of the "default" resting state. Whether greater left hemispheric hyperperfusion reflects lateral dominance needs further examination
Denominators of Eisenstein cohomology classes for GL_2 over imaginary quadratic fields
We study the arithmetic of Eisenstein cohomology classes (in the sense of G.
Harder) for symmetric spaces associated to GL_2 over imaginary quadratic
fields. We prove in many cases a lower bound on their denominator in terms of a
special L-value of a Hecke character providing evidence for a conjecture of
Harder that the denominator is given by this L-value. We also prove under some
additional assumptions that the restriction of the classes to the boundary of
the Borel-Serre compactification of the spaces is integral. Such classes are
interesting for their use in congruences with cuspidal classes to prove
connections between the special L-value and the size of the Selmer group of the

Search for exchange-antisymmetric two-photon states
Atomic two-photon J=0 J'=1 transitions are forbidden for
photons of the same energy. This selection rule is related to the fact that
photons obey Bose-Einstein statistics. We have searched for small violations of
this selection rule by studying transitions in atomic Ba. We set a limit on the
probability that photons are in exchange-antisymmetric states:

Medicaid spending burden among beneficiaries with treatment-resistant depression.
AIM: To evaluate Medicaid spending and healthcare resource utilization (HRU) in treatment-resistant depression (TRD).
MATERIALS & METHODS: TRD beneficiaries were identified from Medicaid claims databases (January 2010-March 2017) and matched 1:1 with major depressive disorder (MDD) beneficiaries without TRD (non-TRD-MDD) and randomly selected patients without MDD (non-MDD). Differences in HRU and per-patient-per-year costs were reported in incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and cost differences (CDs), respectively.
RESULTS: TRD beneficiaries had higher HRU than 1:1 matched non-TRD-MDD (e.g., inpatient visits: IRR = 1.41) and non-MDD beneficiaries (N = 14,710 per cohort; e.g., inpatient visits: IRR = 3.42, p \u3c 0.01). TRD beneficiaries incurred greater costs versus non-TRD-MDD (CD = US8294; p \u3c 0.05).
CONCLUSION: TRD is associated with higher HRU and costs versus non-TRD-MDD and non-MDD. TRD poses a significant burden to Medicaid
Multi-Scan Correlation to Separate Radar Tracks from False Alarms
An algorithm and computer software have been developed to filter out clutter in radar displays in order to clarify real tracks. Detections are generally declared valid when found to be part of a reasonable pattern of three or four detections in an eight scan history. The filtering process reduces the number of spurious reports by several orders of magnitude, providing significant improvement in distinguishing ships from waves and other sources of undesired radar reflections. The algorithm is being incorporated into radar system hardware in order to improve tracking of ships as signals are received. The method also shows promise for air tracking
