An infra-red finger tracking system used in the assessment and remediation of “graph-as-picture” misconceptions

    Get PDF
The workshop presentation will describe a specialized ap- plication of Lee’s “Wiimote Whiteboard” [7] an infra-red camera based tracking system which uses the Nintendo Wii wireless remote control unit and Bluetooth. Young students wear a very small infra-red LED on their index finger with a forefinger/thumb operated micro-switch for produ- cing “mouse clicks”. This system is combined with a vertically mounted data projector or a horizontally mounted regular computer LCD display, creating a cost-effective large interactive touch surface. The system has a fast response time and has been used with primary school students in diagrammatic knowledge (graphicacy) assessment [4] and in interactive dynalinked diagrammatic applications [5]. These applications were de- signed to investigate the “graph-as-picture” misconception and they will be described and demonstrated at the workshop

These aesthetics are not new: Post-Internet conditions and their effect on contemporary ideas of representation in Painting

These Aesthetics Are Not New draws inspiration from the effect of digital technological progress on a consumer society. The Internet as a source of ubiquitous imagery reaffirms the idea that in a Post-Internet age there is nothing new, only conditions affected by a networked way of life. In this thesis I attempt to question contemporary ideas of representation and art making, specifically within the medium of oil paint, in a digitally consumed culture of instantaneous access. I interrogate the repetitive imagery that pervades our online experiences, and I speak about how I use my grasp of painterly knowledge and lexicon to replicate digital conditions in the real world to further cement my position that contemporary aesthetics, (digital, physical or both) are not new. I first introduce the reader to the idea of the Post-Internet, exploring the digital’s encroachment on our physical spaces and it’s relation to the politics of the medium of Oil Paint. I then address the concept of the Image-Object, and unpack this idea by comparing and contrasting emoji’s in relation to gestural mark making and the ascription of meaning through iconographic methods in Oil Painting. This culminates in an analysis of my physical practice in relation to these ideas, and concludes with my observations on the future of our ways of seeing, as affected by the Internet and technological progression

How to Get a Job in Book Publishing

    Get PDF
There are many different doorways into the world of book publishing and it can be challenging, but there are choices that can make it easier. Aspiring publishers often have a hard time breaking into this world because they have no guide. This thesis will be a guide to traversing the different avenues into the world of publishing. Prospective publishers, editors, and writers will be provided with a landscape of what it’s like to work in book publishing. It will also cover the two different ways that people become publishers, an overview of the basic requirements that publishing houses look for in potential employees, and the basic process of what publishers do

Interleukin-6 Levels are Associated with Sleep Quality in Young Females

    Get PDF
Obesity and overweight have been associated with sleep restriction and sleep quality in previous studies. However, mechanisms through which sleep loss or poor sleep quality influence weight gain remain unknown. The aim of this study is to determine the association of levels of inflammatory markers and stress-response hormones with sleep restriction, poor sleep quality, and body weight in young adults. Thirty-one female participants between the ages of 18 and 35 were included. Participants completed the PSQI questionnaire that explores sleep quality and self-reported their average sleep hours during the previous month. Saliva samples were obtained to measure interleukin-6 (IL-6), cortisol, leptin, and ÎČ-estradiol levels by using specific ELISA assays. The group of participants with BMI ≄ 25 that self-reported chronic sleep restriction had significantly higher PSQI scores (poor sleepers). Poor sleep was more frequently present in overweight and obese young female students. Individuals with detectable saliva IL-6 levels had significantly higher PSQI scores. Leptin levels were lower for participants with detectable IL-6 levels. Cortisol levels were higher in poor sleepers in comparison with good sleepers. These results suggest a link of poor sleep quality with low-grade inflammation and stress response stimulation. Further research is required to define a possible role in weight gain of deregulated inflammation and stress-related pathways for poor sleepers

Measuring K-shell Transitions in L-shell Ions of Aluminum Using LLNL EBIT

    Get PDF
We measured the transition energies of the 1s-2p Kα transitions in Al4+ through Al11+. The aluminum ions were created and trapped using the LLNL’s Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT). Once created and trapped, upper levels were collisionally excited by electrons in EBIT\u27s electron beam. X-ray emission following radiative decay of excited levels was detected using the EBIT Calorimeter Spectrometer (ECS). We have measured the centroids of the strongest lines to an accuracy of less than 1 eV. These results will be used to properly identify line emission from celestial x-ray sources, such as elliptical galaxy NGC 4472 and black hole candidate Cyg X1, where x-ray emission from aluminum has been hypothesized. These results will be especially useful after the upcoming launch of the AstroH X-ray observatory in late 2015. Owing to its large collection area and relatively high resolving power, the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) calorimeter instrument on board Astro-H will, for the first time

After the occupation of western Sahara by the Kingdom of Morocco and Mauritania, and the disengagement of Spain, the Saharan were forced to flee to Argelia where they found shelter. For more than 40 years, entire generations live in these refugee camps in the area of Tindouf. The Vacaciones en Paz program enables by law that every kid from 7 to 12 years old may stay in a foster home in all the Spanish territory during the months of summer, when life in these camps becomes harder due to high temperatures. This program enable kids to have health care and to spend the summer months with families that provide them affection and protection.Departamento de Historia Moderna, Contemporånea y de América, Periodismo y Comunicación Audiovisual y PublicidadGrado en Periodism

Treball Final de Grau en AdministraciĂł d'Empreses. Codi: AE1049. Curs 2018-2019In recent years following the bursting of the bubble and followed crisis companies in the gaming industry are in the spotlight because, unlike most companies, has grown after the crisis due to the need solvency has the vast majority of the population. For all this, a company in this sector has been chosen to analyse and carry out a marketing plan. Luckia Gaming Group began his career in 1972, began in the gaming sector leading the management of recreational and jukeboxes machines in different locations in the hospitality sector and was gradually growing and expanding its business and currently has playrooms spread throughout the national territory, casinos in different countries, bingos and was one of the first to operate via online licensed, but besides all this, the group also has complementary to its core business as the marketing of equipment gambling activities, hotel management and catering. This marketing plan starts showing a detailed plan to learn more about the company and the resources with which account, followed by an external analysis where all factors that can influence business development will be shown internal analysis, the consumer and the sector will also be analysed, as well as showing, through Porter's five forces, the specific environment. With all this, an analysis of the situation is carried out using the tool called SWOT in order to minimize weaknesses, face threats, enhance the strengths and opportunities. Finally, it proposes the objectives to be achieved in a year, the strategies and actions to achieve them, and also shows the budget, control of objectives and a schedule of actions

Improving and assessing students’ line graph interpretations: the case of the graph-as-picture interpretation

    Get PDF
The “graph-as-picture misconception” (GAPM) occurs when an abstract representation (e.g., a line graph) is interpreted as a picture of an object (e.g., a mountain). Previous research on students’ line graph interpretations has focused on secondary school level and above, thus this research extends the investigation of the GAPM to primary school level. Particularly, it investigates: which type of environment is more effective for improving young students’ line graph interpretations; and how can be assessed their interpretations. A pilot study involved an improved version of Janvier’s (1978) paper-and-pencil tasks (to create an interactive learning environment) and it investigated how to incorporate a card-sort task (to assess students’ interpretations). Different touch-screen technologies were considered too. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment one, 37 participants (third to sixth year) were assessed in their graphical knowledge through a picture/diagram card-sort task and a “pictorial group” was formed using participants’ interpretations. During the intervention, students performed an active or passive mode of a Racing Car activity in which they moved or watched a car along a track while its speed/distance graph was plotted concurrently alongside. The results suggested that a wide variety of pictorial interpretations exist and students seemed to benefit from the active modality. In experiment two, 38 fifth-year students performed different assessment tests. Extending experiment one, a “drawing the graph” mode and its passive modality were included. In that mode, students modified a plotted line of a speed/distance graph, which was used by the system to race a car along a track. Previous results were not confirmed: only students under the “drawing the graph” modality (including the “pictorial group”) significantly improved their interpretations; and different assessment tests seemed better to observe students’ various interpretations. In conclusion, a learning environment that allows interaction with the representation could potentially improve students’ interpretations, which might be better assessed through a rich set of tests
