    A two-dimensional model of the quasi biennial oscillation of ozone

    The largest amplitudes of the observed Quasi Biennial Oscillation (QBO) in column ozone are found in high latitudes and this must be taken into account in any explanation of the increased depletion of ozone in the southern polar spring during the 1980's. A QBO in zonal wind, temperature and column ozone has been successfully modelled in a two-dimensional dynamical/chemical model by the introduction of a parameterization scheme to model the transfer of momentum to the zonal flow associated with the damping of vertically propagating Kelvin and Rossby-Gravity waves. The largest anomalies in column ozone of approximately 20 DU are present at high latitudes. The equatorial ozone QBO is out of phase with the mid- and high-latitude ozone QBO, in good agreement with observations

    Inversion of polarimetric data from eclipsing binaries

    We describe a method for determining the limb polarization and limb darkening of stars in eclipsing binary systems, by inverting photometric and polarimetric light curves. Because of the ill-conditioning of the problem, we use the Backus-Gilbert method to control the resolution and stability of the recovered solution, and to make quantitative estimates of the maximum accuracy possible. Using this method we confirm that the limb polarization can indeed be recovered, and demonstrate this with simulated data, thus determining the level of observational accuracy required to achieve a given accuracy of reconstruction. This allows us to set out an optimal observational strategy, and to critcally assess the claimed detection of limb polarization in the Algol system. The use of polarization in stars has been proposed as a diagnostic tool in microlensing surveys by Simmons et al.     A quantum mechanical approach to establishing the magnetic field orientation from a maser Zeeman profile

    Recent comparisons of magnetic field directions derived from maser Zeeman splitting with those derived from continuum source rotation measures have prompted new analysis of the propagation of the Zeeman split components, and the inferred field orientation. In order to do this, we first review differing electric field polarization conventions used in past studies. With these clearly and consistently defined, we then show that for a given Zeeman splitting spectrum, the magnetic field direction is fully determined and predictable on theoretical grounds: when a magnetic field is oriented away from the observer, the left-hand circular polarization is observed at higher frequency and the right-hand polarization at lower frequency. This is consistent with classical Lorentzian derivations. The consequent interpretation of recent measurements then raises the possibility of a reversal between the large-scale field (traced by rotation measures) and the small-scale field (traced by maser Zeeman splitting).Comment: 10 pages, 5 Figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    The shuttle external tank thermal design presents many challenges in meeting the stringent requirements established by the structures, main propulsion systems, and Orbiter elements. The selected thermal protection design had to meet these requirements, and ease of application, suitability for mass production considering low weight, cost, and high reliability. This development led to a spray-on-foam (SOFI) which covers the entire tank. The need and design for a SOFI material with a dual role of cryogenic insulation and ablator, and the development of the SOFI over SLA concept for high heating areas are discussed. Further issuses of minimum surface ice/frost, no debris, and the development of the TPS spray process considering the required quality and process control are examined

    DAP2D: A Two-Dimensional Device Simulation Tool for Silicon Bipolar Transistors

    The purpose of this document is to serve as the final report for work performed for Delco Electronics for the period January 1, 1986 through May 15, 1989. A computer program, SCAP2D (Solar Cell Analysis Program in 2- Dimensions) has been successfully converted to enable the simulation of bipolar transistors, including Delco’s thin-epi transistor. This code will be referred to as DAP 2D (Device Analysis Program in 2-Dimensions). Complete source code of DAP 2D is being released to Delco Electronics. This report is organized as follows. Chapter 2 provides a review of the numerical device modeling and discusses code enhancements completed during the last contract year. Chapter 3 shows results obtained by simulating generic bipolar transistors, including polysilicon contacted emitter bipolar transistors. Chapter 4 shows results obtained from simulations of Delco’s thin-epi bipolar transistor. These chapters are intended to show the usefulness of DAP2D in analyzing and designing bipolar transistors. The appendices contain a user’s guide, as well as a complete simulation example
