This article is organized around three groups of 'citations' from architectural forms, texts, images, which generate three options of imagination, representation and reading of space: ruins, circular constructions, and rhetoric (in particular figures of repetition). I discuss the story of Borges "Las ruinas circulares" and examples from Iain Sinclair, London orbital (2002), Gianni Biondillo and Michele Monina, Tangenziali. The circularity generates a repetitive and disparate look allowing the observation of a complementary rhythm of destruction and construction characteristic of progress in the world
Reality beckons: metamodernist depthiness beyond panfictionality
It is often argued that postmodernism has been succeeded by a new dominant cultural logic. We conceive of this new logic as metamodernism. Whilst some twenty-first century texts still engage with and utilise postmodernist practices, they put these practices to new use. In this article, we investigate the metamodern usage of the typically postmodernist devices of metatextuality and ontological slippage in two genres: autofiction and true crime documentary. Specifically, we analyse Ruth Ozekiâs A Tale for the Time Being and the Netflix mini-series The Keepers, demonstrating that forms of fictionalisation, metafictionality and ontological blurring between fiction and reality have been repurposed. We argue that, rather than expand the scope of fiction, overriding reality, the metamodernist repurposing of postmodernist textual strategies generates a kind of âreality-effectâ
From « Hunting Lord » to « Hunted Lord » : a reading of a Barthesian fragment.
A paragraph, fragment of Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes, collection of fragments, describes how his rendition of a Persian painting, « Hunting Lord » â title echoed by another,
« Hunted Woman » â came out as fragments. The anecdote synthĂ©tises different Barthesian concepts.Gratton Johnnie. In: LittĂ©rature, n°97, 1995.
In 2001, Sophie Calle had herself tailed for one day by a private detective. Her objective was to acquire the detective's report and photographs in order to supplement these with her own report and thereby compile a hybrid documentation of the project, a body of evidence based on mixed media and mixed authorship. The version of the project presented and discussed here is approached in terms of this hybridity-fostering setup. In recognition of this setup, the newly published version is characterized as a âdocumontageâ, an assemblage of disparate elements that, within the bounds of a documentary exercise, constantly challenges the protocols and truth regime of the documentary ethic
