    Spheroidisation of metal powder by pulsed electron beam irradiation

    A new powder spheroidisation process has been demonstrated using a large-area, pulsed electron beam technique. This was used to dramatically improve the surface morphology of Stellite 6 metal powder. Powder surface asperities up to 20 μm size can be eliminated by melting and incorporation into the near-surface of the particle. Surface finish is significantly improved. Agitation and rotation of particles due to a beam-induced stress wave enables the irradiation of multiples sides of particles, resulting in uniformly smoothed particles after sufficient pulses. Elemental analysis revealed no measurable contamination as a result of the process. Transmission electron microscopy showed a dense layer is produced within a zone up to 3 μm beneath the surface, with a substantially reduced grain size from ca. 2 μm diameter in the bulk to ca. 40 nm. Elemental homogenisation also was accompanied by grain refinement. The irradiated Stellite 6 showed a reduced basic flowability energy (583 mJ compared to 627 mJ for the untreated), explained by reduced particle-particle cohesion and interlocking, and an increased conditioned bulk density of 4.57 g/ml compared to 4.33 g/ml due to satellite/asperity reduction

    Changes in epidemiological patterns of sea lice infestation on farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in Scotland between 1996 and 2006

    Analyses of a unique database containing sea lice records over an 11 year period provide evidence of changing infestation patterns in Scotland. The data, collected from more than 50 commercial Atlantic salmon farms, indicate that both species of sea lice commonly found in Scotland, Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus, have declined on farms over the past decade. Reductions for both species have been particularly marked since 2001 when more effective veterinary medicines became available. Treatment data were also available in the database and these show a growing trend towards the use of the in feed medication emamectin benzoate (Slice), particularly in the first year of the salmon production cycle. However, this trend to wards single product use has not been sustained in 2006, the latest year for which data are available. There is some evidence of region to region variation within Scotland with the Western Isles experiencing higher levels of infestation. However, compared to the levels observed between 1996 and 2000, all regions have benefited from reduced lice infestation, with the overall pattern showing a particular reduction in the second and third quarters of the second year of production

    Planning an integrated agriculture and health program and designing its evaluation: Experience from Western Kenya.

    AbstractMulti-sectoral programs that involve stakeholders in agriculture, nutrition and health care are essential for responding to nutrition problems such as vitamin A deficiency among pregnant and lactating women and their infants in many poor areas of lower income countries. Yet planning such multi-sectoral programs and designing appropriate evaluations, to respond to different disciplinary cultures of evidence, remain a challenge. We describe the context, program development process, and evaluation design of the Mama SASHA project (Sweetpotato Action for Security and Health in Africa) which promoted production and consumption of a bio-fortified, orange-fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP). In planning the program we drew upon information from needs assessments, stakeholder consultations, and a first round of the implementation evaluation of a pilot project. The multi-disciplinary team worked with partner organizations to develop a program theory of change and an impact pathway which identified aspects of the program that would be monitored and established evaluation methods. Responding to the growing demand for greater rigour in impact evaluations, we carried out quasi-experimental allocation by health facility catchment area, repeat village surveys for assessment of change in intervention and control areas, and longitudinal tracking of individual mother-child pairs. Mid-course corrections in program implementation were informed by program monitoring, regular feedback from implementers and partners’ meetings. To assess economic efficiency and provide evidence for scaling we collected data on resources used and project expenses. Managing the multi-sectoral program and the mixed methods evaluation involved bargaining and trade-offs that were deemed essential to respond to the array of stakeholders, program funders and disciplines involved

    Early stage scaling in phase ordering kinetics

    A global analysis of the scaling behaviour of a system with a scalar order parameter quenched to zero temperature is obtained by numerical simulation of the Ginzburg-Landau equation with conserved and non conserved order parameter. A rich structure emerges, characterized by early and asymptotic scaling regimes, separated by a crossover. The interplay among different dynamical behaviours is investigated by varying the parameters of the quench and can be interpreted as due to the competition of different dynamical fixed points.Comment: 21 pages, latex, 7 figures available upon request from [email protected]

    Suspension high velocity oxy-fuel (SHVOF) spray of delta-theta alumina suspension: phase transformation and tribology

    Suspension high-velocity oxy-fuel (SHVOF) thermal spray is an emerging spray technology that enables the processing of nanometric feedstock. Although SHVOF thermal sprayed alumina coatings prepared from alpha alumina feedstock have been widely reported, a metastable δ-θ Al2O3 feedstock has yet to be investigated despite its low cost and commercial availability. In this study, an aqueous δ-θ Al2O3 suspension was sprayed on to a stainless steel (SS 304) substrate via SHVOF thermal spraying using an internal injection UTP TopGun. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the as-sprayed coating showed δ-θ Al2O3 to γ-Al2O3 transformation upon spraying, along with amorphous/nanocrystalline phase formation. Furthermore, post-spray heat treatment of the coatings was performed at 600–750 °C for 6 and 48 h. The microhardness and indentation fracture toughness of the heat treated coatings increased by a factor of two compared to the as-sprayed coatings: due to grain refinement, pore consolidation and phase transformation of amorphous and γ-Al2O3 to δ-Al2O3. Unlubricated sliding wear tests were conducted at room temperature (~25 °C, relative humidity ~60%) using α-Al2O3 balls (Ø 9.5 mm) as the counter body at a normal load of 16.8 N to study the wear performance of the coatings. The wear rate of the as-sprayed coating and the coating heat treated at 600 °C for 6 h is of the order of 10−9 mm3 (Nm)−1, a noticeable improvement over conventional alumina coatings. The coatings heat treated at 750 °C for both 6 and 48 h failed abruptly by severe wear due to their pre-cracked surface

    Scaling in Late Stage Spinodal Decomposition with Quenched Disorder

    We study the late stages of spinodal decomposition in a Ginzburg-Landau mean field model with quenched disorder. Random spatial dependence in the coupling constants is introduced to model the quenched disorder. The effect of the disorder on the scaling of the structure factor and on the domain growth is investigated in both the zero temperature limit and at finite temperature. In particular, we find that at zero temperature the domain size, R(t)R(t), scales with the amplitude, AA, of the quenched disorder as R(t)=Aβf(t/Aγ)R(t) = A^{-\beta} f(t/A^{-\gamma}) with β1.0\beta \simeq 1.0 and γ3.0\gamma \simeq 3.0 in two dimensions. We show that β/γ=α\beta/\gamma = \alpha, where α\alpha is the Lifshitz-Slyosov exponent. At finite temperature, this simple scaling is not observed and we suggest that the scaling also depends on temperature and AA. We discuss these results in the context of Monte Carlo and cell dynamical models for phase separation in systems with quenched disorder, and propose that in a Monte Carlo simulation the concentration of impurities, cc, is related to AA by Ac1/dA \sim c^{1/d}.Comment: RevTex manuscript 5 pages and 5 figures (obtained upon request via email [email protected]

    Unravelling plant responses to stress—the importance of targeted and untargeted metabolomics

    Climate change and an increasing population, present a massive global challenge with respect to environmentally sustainable nutritious food production. Crop yield enhancements, through breeding, are decreasing, whilst agricultural intensification is constrained by emerging, re-emerging, and endemic pests and pathogens, accounting for ~30% of global crop losses, as well as mounting abiotic stress pressures, due to climate change. Metabolomics approaches have previously contributed to our knowledge within the fields of molecular plant pathology and plant–insect interactions. However, these remain incredibly challenging targets, due to the vast diversity in metabolite volatility and polarity, heterogeneous mixtures of pathogen and plant cells, as well as rapid rates of metabolite turn-over. Unravelling the systematic biochemical responses of plants to various individual and combined stresses, involves monitoring signaling compounds, secondary messengers, phytohormones, and defensive and protective chemicals. This demands both targeted and untargeted metabolomics approaches, as well as a range of enzymatic assays, protein assays, and proteomic and transcriptomic technologies. In this review, we focus upon the technical and biological challenges of measuring the metabolome associated with plant stress. We illustrate the challenges, with relevant examples from bacterial and fungal molecular pathologies, plant–insect interactions, and abiotic and combined stress in the environment. We also discuss future prospects from both the perspective of key innovative metabolomic technologies and their deployment in breeding for stress resistance

    A Global Portrait of Counselling Psychologists’ Characteristics, Perspectives, and Professional Behaviors

    Counselling psychologists in eight countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States) responded to survey questions that focused on their demographics as well as their professional identities, roles, settings and activities. As well, they were asked about satisfaction with the specialty and the extent to which they endorsed 10 core counselling psychology values. This article reports those results, focusing both on areas in which there were between-country similarities as well as on those for which there were differences. These data provide is a snapshot of counselling psychology globally and establish a foundation for the other articles in this special issue of the journal

    Quality of Recovery After Rotator Cuff Repair With Interscalene Liposomal Bupivacaine Versus Interscalene Nerve Catheter

    Background: Interscalene nerve catheters have been proven to be effective in managing pain after rotator cuff repair (RCR) surgery. Liposomal bupivacaine is a newer approved therapy for use around the interscalene brachial plexus, but its analgesic efficacy has limited supporting data in various patient populations. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of recovery after arthroscopic RCR in patients who received either single-injection interscalene liposomal bupivacaine or an interscalene peripheral nerve catheter. It was hypothesized that interscalene peripheral nerve catheters would provide more reliable analgesia and improved patient satisfaction 48 hours after surgery. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2.Methods:Enrolled were 93 consecutive patients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery at a single ambulatory surgery center between October 2020 and June 2021. Of these patients, 13 were lost to follow-up; thus, 80 patients were included in statistical analysis. One group of patients (n = 48) received a preoperative interscalene nerve block placed with 10 mL 0.5% bupivacaine and 10 mL 1.3% liposomal bupivacaine. The second group (n = 32) received a preoperative interscalene catheter with an initial bolus of 20 mL 0.25% bupivacaine and a 0.2% ropivacaine infusion by an elastomeric pump set at 10 mL/hr for 48 hours. The primary outcome was the difference between preoperative and 48-hour postoperative quality of recovery-15 (QoR-15) scores. Secondary outcomes included visual analog pain scores, opioid use, and patient satisfaction. Complications and adverse effects were also noted. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to analyze means and standard deviations for continuous endpoints; Fisher exact test was used to analyze counts and proportions for categorical endpoints. Results: The liposomal bupivacaine group had a mean reduction of 3.9 in their postoperative QoR-15 scores, and the catheter group had a mean reduction of 25.1 in their postoperative QoR-15 scores, indicating a significantly worse functional recovery period compared with liposomal bupivacaine within the first 48 hours (P < .001). Patients who received liposomal bupivacaine also had significantly lower pain scores on the second postoperative day, improved quality of sleep, and improved satisfaction with analgesia (P < .05 for all).
