    A Surprising Lack of LGRB Metallicity Evolution with Redshift

    Recent additions to the population of Long-duration Gamma Ray Burst (LGRB) host galaxies with measured metallicities and host masses allow us to investigate how the distributions of both these properties change with redshift. We form a sample out to z of 2.5 which we show does not have strong redshift dependent populations biases in mass and metallicity measurements. Using this sample, we find a surprising lack of evolution in the LGRB metallicity distribution across different redshifts and in particular the fraction of LGRB hosts with relatively high-metallicity, that is those with 12+log(O/H) > 8.4, remains essentially constant out to z = 2.5. This result is at odds with the evolution in the mass metallicity relation of typical galaxies, which become progressively more metal poor with increasing redshift. By converting the measured LGRB host masses and redshifts to expected metallicities using redshift appropriate mass-metallicity relations, we further find that the increase in LGRB host galaxy mass distribution with redshift seen in the Perley et al. (2016) SHOALS sample is consistent with that needed to preserve a non-evolving LGRB metallicity distribution. However, the estimated LGRB host metallicity distribution is at least a quarter dex higher at all redshifts than the measured metallicity distribution. This corresponds to about a factor of two in raw metallicity and resolves much of the difference between the LGRB host metallicity cutoffs determined by Graham & Fruchter (2017) and Perley et al. (2016). As LGRB hosts do not follow the general mass metallicity relations, there is no substitute for actually measuring their metallicities.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 10 table

    Cow, farm, and herd management factors in the dry period associated with raised somatic cell counts in early lactation

    This study investigated cow characteristics, farm facilities, and herd management strategies during the dry period to examine their joint influence on somatic cell counts (SCC) in early lactation. Data from 52 commercial dairy farms throughout England and Wales were collected over a 2-yr period. For the purpose of analysis, cows were separated into those housed for the dry period (6,419 cow-dry periods) and those at pasture (7,425 cow-dry periods). Bayesian multilevel models were specified with 2 response variables: ln SCC (continuous) and SCC >199,000 cells/mL (binary), both within 30 d of calving. Cow factors associated with an increased SCC after calving were parity, an SCC >199,000 cells/mL in the 60 d before drying off, increasing milk yield 0 to 30 d before drying off, and reduced DIM after calving at the time of SCC estimation. Herd management factors associated with an increased SCC after calving included procedures at drying off, aspects of bedding management, stocking density, and method of pasture grazing. Posterior predictions were used for model assessment, and these indicated that model fit was generally good.     Psychosocial mediators of change in physical activity in the Welsh national exercise referral scheme: secondary analysis of a randomised controlled trial

    Objective: While an increasing number of randomised controlled trials report impacts of exercise referral schemes (ERS) on physical activity, few have investigated the mechanisms through which increases in physical activity are produced. This study examines whether a National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS) in Wales is associated with improvements in autonomous motivation, self-efficacy and social support, and whether change in physical activity is mediated by change in these psychosocial processes.<p></p> Methods: A pragmatic randomised controlled trial of NERS across 12 LHBs in Wales. Questionnaires measured demographic data and physical activity at baseline. Participants (N = 2160) with depression, anxiety or CHD risk factors were referred by health professionals and randomly assigned to control or intervention. At six months psychological process measures were collected by questionnaire. At 12 months physical activity was assessed by 7 Day PAR telephone interview. Regressions tested intervention effects on psychosocial variables, physical activity before and after adjusting for mediators and socio demographic patterning.<p></p> Results: Significant intervention effects were found for autonomous motivation and social support for exercise at 6 months. No intervention effect was observed for self-efficacy. The data are consistent with a hypothesis of partial mediation of the intervention effect by autonomous motivation. Analysis of moderators showed significant improvements in relative autonomy in all subgroups. The greatest improvements in autonomous motivation were observed among patients who were least active at baseline.<p></p> Discussion: The present study offered key insights into psychosocial processes of change in an exercise referral scheme, with effects on physical activity mediated by autonomous motivation. Findings support the use of self-determination theory as a framework for ERS. Further research is required to explain socio-demographic patterning in responses to ERS, with changes in motivation occurring among all sub-groups of participants, though not always leading to higher adherence or behavioural change. This highlights the importance of socio-ecological approaches to developing and evaluating behaviour change interventions, which consider factors beyond the individual, including conditions in which improved motivation does or does not produce behavioural change

    A Universe Without Weak Interactions

    A universe without weak interactions is constructed that undergoes big-bang nucleosynthesis, matter domination, structure formation, and star formation. The stars in this universe are able to burn for billions of years, synthesize elements up to iron, and undergo supernova explosions, dispersing heavy elements into the interstellar medium. These definitive claims are supported by a detailed analysis where this hypothetical "Weakless Universe" is matched to our Universe by simultaneously adjusting Standard Model and cosmological parameters. For instance, chemistry and nuclear physics are essentially unchanged. The apparent habitability of the Weakless Universe suggests that the anthropic principle does not determine the scale of electroweak breaking, or even require that it be smaller than the Planck scale, so long as technically natural parameters may be suitably adjusted. Whether the multi-parameter adjustment is realized or probable is dependent on the ultraviolet completion, such as the string landscape. Considering a similar analysis for the cosmological constant, however, we argue that no adjustments of other parameters are able to allow the cosmological constant to raise up even remotely close to the Planck scale while obtaining macroscopic structure. The fine-tuning problems associated with the electroweak breaking scale and the cosmological constant therefore appear to be qualitatively different from the perspective of obtaining a habitable universe.Comment: 27 pages; 4 figure
