A Renormalization Group Analysis of the NCG constraints m_{top} = 2\,m_W},
We study the evolution under the renormalization group of the restrictions on
the parameters of the standard model coming from Non-Commutative Geometry,
namely and . We adopt the point of
view that these relations are to be interpreted as {\it tree level} constraints
and, as such, can be implemented in a mass independent renormalization scheme
only at a given energy scale . We show that the physical predictions on
the top and Higgs masses depend weakly on .Comment: 7 pages, FTUAM-94/2, uses harvma
Bath Assisted Cooling of Spins
A suitable sequence of sharp pulses applied to a spin coupled to a bosonic
bath can cool its state, i.e., increase its polarization or ground state
occupation probability. Starting from an unpolarized state of the spin in
equilibrium with the bath, one can reach very low temperatures or sizeable
polarizations within a time shorter than the decoherence time. Both the bath
and external fields are necessary for the effect which comes from the
backreaction of the spin on the bath. This method can be applied to cool at
once a disordered ensemble of spins. Since the bath is crucial for this
mechanism, the cooling limits are set by the strength of its interaction with
the spin(s).Comment: 4 pages. Accepted in PR
Aventurescence
Aventurescence explores ideas of comfort and identity through glass and the body. I am interested in the material qualities and limitations of glass, including luminosity, flexibility, and fragility; and the ways in which these can be expressed and communicated through the body. To expand the material’s flexibility I used a combination of multiple glass bodies and silicones to create glass textiles and objects with flexible surfaces. I also used traditional fusing methods and alternative glasses (reflective glass beads) to create sheets and screens. These objects and textiles parallel skin, and communicate with the body through object, performance, and the consequent documentation of performance. The culmination of my research was a cohesive body of work, utilizing the body, silicones, and glass, to create objects, performance, and installation

QED in external fields from the spin representation
Systematic use of the infinite-dimensional spin representation simplifies and
rigorizes several questions in Quantum Field Theory. This representation
permutes ``Gaussian'' elements in the fermion Fock space, and is necessarily
projective: we compute its cocycle at the group level, and obtain Schwinger
terms and anomalies from infinitesimal versions of this cocycle. Quantization,
in this framework, depends on the choice of the ``right'' complex structure on
the space of solutions of the Dirac equation. We show how the spin
representation allows one to compute exactly the S-matrix for fermions in an
external field; the cocycle yields a causality condition needed to determine
the phase.Comment: 32 pages, Plain TeX, UCR-FM-01-9
Web-Based Measure of Semantic Relatedness
Semantic relatedness measures quantify the degree in which
some words or concepts are related, considering not only similarity but any possible semantic relationship among them. Relatedness computation is of great interest in different areas, such as Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, or the Semantic Web. Different methods have been proposed in the past; however, current relatedness measures lack some desirable properties for a new generation of Semantic Web applications: maximum coverage, domain independence, and universality.
In this paper, we explore the use of a semantic relatedness measure between words, that uses the Web as knowledge source. This measure exploits the information about frequencies of use provided by existing search engines. Furthermore, taking this measure as basis, we define a new semantic relatedness measure among ontology terms. The proposed measure fulfils the above mentioned desirable properties to be used on the Semantic Web. We have tested extensively this semantic measure to show that it correlates well with human judgment, and helps solving some particular tasks, as word sense disambiguation or ontology matching
Metallic Coaxial Nanolasers
The last two decades have witnessed tremendous advancements in the area of
nanophotonics and plasmonics. Undoubtedly, the introduction of metallic
structures has opened a path towards light confinement and manipulation at the
subwavelength scale { a regime that was previously thought to be out of reach
in optics. Of central importance is to devise efficient light sources to power
up the future nanoscale optical circuits. Coaxial resonators can provide a
platform to implement such subwavelength sources. They support ultrasmall
cavity modes and offer large mode-emitter overlap as well as multifold
scalability. Given their large modulation bandwidth, they hold promise for high
speed optical interconnects { where they can be used for light generation and
modulation simultaneously. In addition, the possibility of thresholdless
operation in such devices may have implications in developing the next
generation of efficient lighting systems. In this review article, the physics
and applications of coaxial nanolasers will be discussed
Numerical approximations to a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem with a discontinuous initial condition
A singularly perturbed parabolic problem of convection-diffusion type with a discontinuous initial condition is examined. An analytic function is identified which matches the discontinuity in the initial condition and also satisfies the homogenous parabolic differential equation associated with the problem. The difference between this analytical function and the solution of the parabolic problem is approximated numerically, using an upwind finite difference operator combined with an appropriate layer-adapted mesh. The numerical method is shown to be parameter-uniform. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the theoretical error bounds established in the paper. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature
