How Demographic and Social Factors Correlate With the Perception of Gluten and Gluten Sensitivity (GS)

Learning Objective: To determine which of the presented demographic and social factors correlate with GS or gluten misconceptions to discover potential contributors of GS. Background: With an increase in GS cases, an exploration and understanding of how demographic and social factors such as gender, ethnicity, economic status, family/friend behavior, and social media correlate with GS and the perception of gluten was sought after. Method: The researcher constructed a survey that was reviewed by 13 individuals for content, clarity, and internal consistency. The survey was sent out to the student body (2,658) at a small Midwestern university. The final number of participants was 176. Questions covering demographics, social backgrounds, GS, social media, and perception of gluten were included. Differences between groups (those with GS and those without) were analyzed using independent samples t-tests. The relationship and association between variables were analyzed using the two-way chi square test and phi coefficient, respectively. Results: Participants were more likely to report GS if they grew up with someone who had GS, X2 (1, N=172) = 34.8, p = \u3c .001. A strong positive association between the variables was determined (φ = 0.45). People with GS reported following more GS/gluten-free diet promoting celebrities and influencers on social media (M=3.44, SD=9.8) than people who did not report having GS (M=0.78, SD=1.73); t (165) = -2.99, p =.003; d = 0.59. Conclusion: Results suggest that social factors such as the incidence of GS within the family and the number of GS/gluten-free diet promoting celebrities and influencers followed on social media do correlate with GS. The findings support the need for additional research to explore the relationship between these social factors and GS. Resiliency Factors Among Transgender People of Color

    Get PDF
Much of the research on transgender individuals has been geared towards identifying risk factors including suicide, HIV, and poverty. Little to no research has been conducted on resiliency factors within the transgender community. The few research studies that have focused on transgender individuals have made little or no reference to transgender people of color. This study utilized the Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) approach to examine resiliency factors among eleven transgender people of color. The data analysis process yielded a total of eleven domains including: (1) Adverse Conditions, (2) Coping Mechanisms, (3) Support, (4) Community Resources, (5) Perceptions of the LGBT Community, (6) Intimate Relationships, (7) Mental Health Counseling, (8) Transitioning Processes, (9) Family Reactions to Gender Identity, (10) Family Systems/Beliefs, and (11) Personal Beliefs. All participants showed resiliency by overcoming one of more of the following adverse conditions: death of a loved one, unemployment, lack of health insurance, experiences of racism, experiences of transphobia, violence/bullying, employment discrimination, negative public responses, negative interpersonal responses, and within group discrimination. All participants reported using one or more of the following coping mechanisms: assertive/communication/self-advocacy, spiritual coping, honesty/integrity, avoidance, verbal/physical aggression, and help-seeking. Areas of support for participants came from the following sources: friends, peers, significant others, and LGBT community programs. One major area of support for participants came from family members who accepted their transgender identity. The majority of individuals reported being future oriented with personal goals. Other findings include participants sharing the following personality characteristics: outspoken/strong, independent, friendly/outgoing, private, leader/role model, and determination. Participants also challenged beliefs about the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity often using labels for both interchangeably. This study showed evidence for the complexity within the transgender community. The results in this study argue that the transgender community is more than a group of people who face hardships, but rather they are a community who show tremendous strength and resiliency in living their day to day lives

Where Does it Hurt? A Cultivation Theory’s Perspective on Domestic Violence

    Get PDF
This study investigated Cultivation Theory and its role in the issue of domestic violence. I hypothesized that people who are exposed to larger quantities of pop culture mediums will have less negative attitudes towards the issue of domestic violence. My study also posed research questions about the relationship between the attitudes towards domestic violence with both basic domestic violence knowledge and personal experience with the issue. I gathered my data through a thirty-question survey and distributed it online, using convenience and snowball samples. My results did not support my hypothesis; however, I did find statistical significance for a negative correlation between reading celebrity gossip magazines and knowledge of basic domestic violence facts. I conclude with a discussion highlighting the implications and limitations

Improving the system capacity of broadband services using multiple high-altitude platforms

    Get PDF
A method of significantly improving the capacity of high-altitude platform (HAP) communications networks operating in the millimeter-wave bands is presented. It is shown how constellations of HAPs can share a common frequency allocation by exploiting the directionality of the user antenna. The system capacity of such constellations is critically affected by the minimum angular separation of the HAPs and the sidelobe level of the user antenna. For typical antenna beamwidths of approximately 5/spl deg/ an inter-HAP spacing of 4 km is sufficient to deliver optimum performance. The aggregate bandwidth efficiency is evaluated, both theoretically using the Shannon equation, and using practical modulation and coding schemes, for multiple HAP configurations delivering either single or multiple cells. For the user antenna beamwidths used, it is shown that capacity increases are commensurate with the increase in the number of platforms, up to 10 HAPs. For increases beyond this the choice of constellation strategy becomes increasingly important
