The Dynamics of Brazilian Rock Art Landscape: An Agent-Based Modelling Approach to Theories

The first attempts at synthetizing the diversity of Brazilian rock art sites and the spread of graphic similarities envolved a certain amount of environmental determinism and traditionalism. We propose an agent-based model able to verify the possible effects of theoretical perspectives on the landscape. Our model uses a number of hunters moving randomly and a set of shelters where they can make new paintings according to simples rules. Three different mechanisms can be modified: exogenous (by nature, some shelters are fit for painting and not others), endogenous (by culture, some shelters are preferred by each hunter, and not others) and cumulative (shelters with paintings are more attractive). Compared to the archaeological context, only exogenous and cumulative constraints seem able to result in a landscape where a few shelters are concentrating most of the paintings. Endogenous constraints alone seem unable to produce the same results without another mechanism for transmission

Cartografia do interior bahiano.

The colonial cartography of the territory of Bahia is limited by the availability of sources. Too few documents allow us to present the space of the Captaincy, and the reports of the period lack information about distances. In this paper, we analyze three documents broadly dated from the XVIIIth century. We show how it is possible to point their origin to a more precise timeframe. Based on this, we then realize a complete spatial analysis, revealing a peopling process more complex than what has generally been depicted in the literature. These maps indicate a movement beyond the main classical communication axes, the first to Minas Gerais and the second to the State of Maranhão-Grão-Pará

Early prehistory of South America and population dynamics: Issues and hypotheses

International audiencePeople were in the Americas before, during, and immediately after the Last Glacial Maximum. Multiple data converge toward a deep chronology model for Homo genre exploration, dispersal, occupation, and settlement across the continent. South America is not an exception. This paper is an attempt to think of South America record in terms of population dynamics within a Paleolithic reflection: What are the anthropological implications of a longer and therefore slower peopling process? What modes of expansion, rhythms, adaptations, routes could be traced base especially in lithic records? What kind of archaeological manifestations should we expect in the different environments that make up an immense and highly diverse geography? What modes of technological continuity and change could be linked to these manifestations? Although further research is still needed to address these questions, our goal is to contribute to posing the problem in the most holistic way possible, linking climate, environment, and techno-cultural data within and beyond South America, in order to model how populations might have expanded and contracted at different periods throughout this subcontinent.L’Homme était présent dans les Amériques avant, pendant et après le Dernier Maximum Glaciaire.

Interactions and network analysis of a rock art site in Morro do Chapéu, Bahia, Brazil

<p>We present a network analysis of human representations painted in a prehistoric rock shelter located in the municipality of Morro do Chapéu, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. This particular set of rock art was classified according to common attributes shared by all the figures. The network created from these criteria allows us to study the behaviour of specific patterned elements considered as salient identity markers.</p> <p>The region of the Chapada Diamantina is located in the central part of the state of Bahia. Mostly above 1000 meters, it shows a rich vegetation in the middle of a semiarid zone. The municipality of Morro do Chapéu lies in the north, on a sandstone belt separating the two most important hydrographic basins of Bahia, São Francisco and Paraguaçu rivers.</p> <p>In order to analyze the diversity of human representations, we developed a classification based on shared binary morphological and technical attributes. A 2-mode network was then mounted to<br>visualize the relations existing between all the elements and their variables. This method allowed us to identify clusters of similar figures and outliers, with original combinations of attributes.<br>Furthermore, we wanted to verify this method, still new in rock art studies, against another statistical test. MCA, or Multiple Correspondence Analysis, offered us a geometric analysis of the same data. It resulted in fairly similar results.</p> <p> </p
