The First Larval Stage of Microprosthema semilaeve (von Martens, 1872) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Stenopodidea) Obtained in the Laboratory

    Get PDF
The first larval stage of Microprosthema semilaeve (von Martens, 1872) is described from ovigerous females collected off Sombrero Key, Florida Keys, USA, and Guana Island, British Virgin Islands, Caribbean. The larvae are characterized by a broad, triangular telson bearing posterolateral spines and an “anomuran seta,” a first maxilliped that differs markedly from the very similar (to each other) second and third maxillipeds, and the presence of the first pereiopod as a swimming appendage upon hatching, as is apparently true of all stenopodidean first stage larvae. Characters of the larvae are compared to those described from the Indian Ocean by Raje and Ranade (1978) and mistakenly attributed to this same species, and to those of stenopodidean larvae described by Lebour (1941) from Bermuda plankton. Problems in identifying adult specimens of Microprosthema from the Caribbean are discussed

Single spontaneous photon as a coherent beamsplitter for an atomic matterwave

In spontaneous emission an atom in an excited state undergoes a transition to the ground state and emits a single photon. Associated with the emission is a change of the atomic momentum due to photon recoil. Photon emission can be modified close to surfaces and in cavities. For an ion, localized in front of a mirror, coherence of the emitted resonance fluorescence has been reported. In free space experiments demonstrated that spontaneous emission destroys motional coherence. Here we report on motional coherence created by a single spontaneous emission event close to a mirror surface. The coherence in the free atomic motion is verified by atom interferometry. The photon can be regarded as a beamsplitter for an atomic matterwave and consequently our experiment extends the original recoiling slit Gedanken experiment by Einstein to the case where the slit is in a robust coherent superposition of the two recoils associated with the two paths of the quanta.Comment: main text: 5 pages, 4 figure; supplementary information: 8 pages, 1 figur

(DIPF/Orig.)This paper provides an overview over half a century of international large-scale assessments from the viewpoint of the German participation in such studies. Since the Pilot Twelve Country Study was launched in the late 1950s, the international interest in large-scale assessments has constantly grown so that these studies now form an integral part of educational research and policy in many countries worldwide. In Germany and its Federal States, however, this kind of research does not have such a continuous tradition. Despite participating in a number of early studies, Germany refrained from participation for most of the 1970s and 1980s. The rekindled interest since the mid-1990s reveals a change in educational approaches and reflects a certain backlog in view of empirical research. This review of five decades of international large-scale assessments retraces the German involvement in such studies and points out a number of relevant assessment results in international comparison. Further, this paper reveals how the studies have grown over time, not only in numbers of participating countries but also in terms of the subject areas they cover as well as the target groups they assess. The paper also reflects on the development of some major lines of argument that prevail in current discussions among and between educational researchers and practitioners, politicians, and the general public. The paper\u27s summary attempts to mediate this discussion and includes a cautious outlook on a number of possible future areas of research in international large-scale assessments. (DIPF/Orig.

Data Enabled Failure Management Process (DEFMP) across the Product Value Chain

    Get PDF
The continuously increasing amount of production data and the advancing development of digitization solutions promote advanced data analytics as a promising approach for failure management. Beyond the consideration of single units, examining the end-to-end value chain, including development, production, and usage, offers potential for failure in management-related investigations. Nonetheless, challenges regarding data integration from different entities along the value creation process, data volume and formats handling, effective analytics, and decision support arise. The CRISP-DM approach has become a widely established reference as a conceptual framework for data-driven solutions. However, the linkage between existing failure management procedures and the subsequent development of data-driven solutions needs to be specified. Accordingly, this paper presents a cross-value chain Data Enabled Failure Management Process (DEFMP). The central element is a process model to implement a cross-value chain data-enabled failure management, considering established quality management and data analytics approaches. Based on available failure, product, and process knowledge along the value chain, a path towards developing a comprehensive decision support system is shown. DEFMP combines a reactive failure process with a data-driven approach to incorporate data analytics for proactive improvements. Using DEFMP, the failure management process of a commercial vehicle manufacturer is adapted. With this, partial automation of failure management is made possible. In addition, the potential for improvements is identified and prioritized

Long-term follow-up of MCL patients treated with single-agent ibrutinib: updated safety and efficacy results

Ibrutinib, an oral inhibitor of Bruton tyrosine kinase, is approved for patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) who have received one prior therapy. We report the updated safety and efficacy results from the multicenter, open-label phase 2 registration trial of Ibrutinib (median 26.7-month follow-up). Patients (N = 111) received oral ibrutinib 560 mg once daily, and those with stable disease or better could enter a long-term extension study. The primary end point was overall response rate (ORR). The median patient age was 68 years (range, 40-84), with a median of 3 prior therapies (range, 1-5). The median treatment duration was 8.3 months; 46% of patients were treated for \u3e12 months, and 22% were treated for \u3e= 2 years. The ORR was 67% (23% complete response), with a median duration of response of 17.5 months. The 24-month progression-free survival and overall survival rates were 31% (95% confidence interval [Cl], 22.3-40.4) and 47% (95% Cl, 37.1-56.9), respectively. The most common adverse events (AEs) in \u3e30% of patients included diarrhea (54%), fatigue (50%), nausea (33%), and dyspnea (32%). The most frequent grade \u3e= 3 infections included pneumonia (8%), urinary tract infection (4%), and cell ulitis (3%). Grade bleeding events in \u3e= 2% of patients were hematuria (2%) and subdural hematoma (2%). Common all-grade hematologic AEs were thrombocytopenia (22%), neutropenia (19%), and anemia (18%). The prevalence of infection, diarrhea, and bleeding was highest for the first 6 months of therapy and less thereafter. With longer follow-up, ibrutinib continues to demonstrate durable responses and favorable safety in relapsed/refractory MCL. The trial is registered to www.ClinicalTrials.gov as #NCT01236391

Questioning the rise of gelatinous zooplankton in the World's oceans

    Get PDF
During the past several decades, high numbers of gelatinous zooplankton species have been reported in many estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Coupled with media-driven public perception, a paradigm has evolved in which the global ocean ecosystems are thought to be heading toward being dominated by “nuisance” jellyfish. We question this current paradigm by presenting a broad overview of gelatinous zooplankton in a historicalcontext to develop the hypothesis that population changes reflect the human-mediated alteration of global ocean ecosystems. To this end, we synthesize information related to the evolutionary context of contemporary gelatinous zooplankton blooms, the human frame of reference forchanges in gelatinous zooplankton populations, and whether sufficient data are available to have established the paradigm. We conclude that the current paradigm in which it is believed that there has been a global increase in gelatinous zooplankton is unsubstantiated, and we develop a strategy for addressing the critical questions about long-term, human-related changes in the sea as they relate to gelatinous zooplankton blooms
