    An iterative approach to enhance the clinical learning experience in Macao nursing education

    © 2019 Chinese Nursing Association Objective: The aim of this study was to reduce or eliminate the stressors to enhance nursing students’ clinical learning experience through implementation of an iterative approach that developed a personalised response to student stress. Methods: A prospective cohort research design was applied to collect data from a sample of undergraduate nursing students across the four study years. An iterative approach was employed to improve students’ learning experience and the Stressors in Nursing Students Scale-Chinese Version (SINS-CN) was used to measure student stress. Key problems encountered by students were identified, refined and the responding solutions were worked out and implemented among this group of students through their first year to fourth year. Results: The overall SINS-CN mean score (2.17–2.82) of students was declined to a moderate level. Conclusions: Having implemented iterative approach to address factors that led to stressful environments encountered by the nursing students, the overall stress score and each sub-dimension score decreased significantly. Therefore, it is recommended that this approach could be adopted by other colleagues in the nursing arena around the world

DOI: 10.1080/01411920701609406., which has been published in final form at http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/01411920701609406.This article explores the value systems which inform assessment practices in higher education, specifically how particular forms of knowledge valued in the curriculum shape and constrain assessment practices. The data for this article is drawn from two courses which participated in a service learning research and development project at the University of Cape Town. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu and Basil Bernstein, the article argues that the location of these courses—within the field of higher education and a particular kind of institution, faculty and department—shapes their assessment systems, practices and outcomes in certain ways. What is valued in this field (Bourdieu) is a form of knowledge production which requires students 'to step out of the particularities'. This form of knowledge operates as a regulative discourse, constituting what counts as legitimate. Using the assessment system as a 'window', this article explores how these service learning courses constitute and are constituted by the regulative discourse of the field. While the constraints of the field are powerful, this project offers some hopeful signs of forms of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment that, at the very least, name and challenge these underlying value systems

    Abstract: Orientation: In accordance with global trends, South Africa is striving for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Discourses of employees’ employment equity (EE) perceptions within the 4IR context are studied 25 years after apartheid. Research purpose: The purpose of the study was to understand the systems psychodynamics underneath the surface of employees’ perceptions of EE in South Africa within the context of the 4IR. Motivation for the study: South African workplaces are debated nationally and urged to compete with 4IR changes on a global level. This research focuses on employees’ perceptions of EE underneath the surface and aims at understanding employees’ perceptions through the conflict, identity, boundaries, authority, roles, task (CIBART) model..

    Appraising infrastructure for new towns in Ireland

Any other use of these PDF files is subject to reprint fees.Over a 20 year period 1996–2016, a new 223 ha town is being developed 10 miles west of Dublin's city centre on the south side of Lucan, County Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland (ROI). This €4 billion ‘Adamstown’ development is the first of four planning schemes in ROI to be approved as a strategic development zone – an integrated planning framework deemed suitable for creating sustainable neighbourhoods in sites of strategic economic or social importance to the state. The creation of sustainable neighbourhoods in ROI is facilitated through the implementation of a checklist of 60 indicators. This paper critically examines the attempts being made to consider sustainability within the development's overall infrastructure plan, specifically: transport, energy and water services, information technology and waste. Inadequacies in the existing development are linked to shortfalls in the sustainability checklist, by way of a comparison of infrastructure-related indicators from the ROI checklist with those derived for the UK and exemplar European projects (i.e. Bedzed, UK and Freiberg, Germany). The subsequent legacy for future residents of Adamstown is then considered in the context of ‘what if’ scenarios
