High resolution space-time analysis by an active array

We present in this paper a high resolution method for the joint estimation of direction and time of arrival . This algorithm applies to active antenna for wich the emitted signal of some sources is known . After a brief recall of high resolution methods used in passive localization, we show how to introduce the knowledge of the signal in the MUSIC method . The proposed method is commented, particularly versus passive processing and active analysis of the signal received on one sensor. Performances of the method are then illustrated by simulation results .Nous présentons dans cet article une méthode haute résolution d'estimation conjointe de directions et de temps d'arrivée. Cet algorithme s'applique aux antennes actives pour lesquelles le signal émis par certaines sources est connu. Après un rappel des méthodes haute résolution utilisées en passif, nous montrons comment introduire la connaissance du signal dans la méthode MUSIC. La méthode proposée est commentée, notamment dans ses relations avec le traitement passif et avec l'analyse en actif du signal reçu sur un capteur unique. Décorrélation de sources large bande en traitement d'antenne actif à haute résolution

Les méthodes de localisation à haute résolution basées sur l'exploitation de la matrice spectrale des signaux reçus sont mises en défaut lorsque les sources observées sont trop fortement corrélées. Les traitements actifs y sont d'autant plus sensibles que, dans ce cas précis, le signal reçu est constitué de copies atténuées et retardées d'un unique signal, celui qui est émis. Son comportement est illustré sur plusieurs simulations . Glycogen Synthesis is Induced in Hypoxia by the Hypoxia-Inducible Factor and Promotes Cancer Cell Survival

The hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), in addition to genetic and epigenetic changes, is largely responsible for alterations in cell metabolism in hypoxic tumor cells. This transcription factor not only favors cell proliferation through the metabolic shift from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis and lactic acid production but also stimulates nutrient supply by mediating adaptive survival mechanisms. In this study we showed that glycogen synthesis is enhanced in non-cancer and cancer cells when exposed to hypoxia, resulting in a large increase in glycogen stores. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the mRNA and protein levels of the first enzyme of glycogenesis, phosphoglucomutase1 (PGM1), were increased in hypoxia. We showed that induction of glycogen storage as well as PGM1 expression were dependent on HIF-1 and HIF-2. We established that hypoxia-induced glycogen stores are rapidly mobilized in cells that are starved of glucose. Glycogenolysis allows these “hypoxia-preconditioned” cells to confront and survive glucose deprivation. In contrast normoxic control cells exhibit a high rate of cell death following glucose removal. These findings point to the important role of hypoxia and HIF in inducing mechanisms of rapid adaptation and survival in response to a decrease in oxygen tension. We propose that a decrease in pO2 acts as an “alarm” that prepares the cells to face subsequent nutrient depletion and to survive

Angular localisation for non circular signals

We present in this article an angular location algorithm of non circular sources . We show how to take into account non circularit y of signals in array processing and develop an extension of the MUSIC algorithm . This extension offers, for a relatively simple implementation, performance appreciably superior the classic algorithm . The main improvement linked to the non circularit y concern the resolution, the variance of estimation and the number of localizable sources . These characteristics are illustrated b y simulations .Nous présentons dans cet article un algorithme de localisation angulaire de sources non circulaires. Nous montrons comment prendre en compte la nature non circulaire des signaux en traitement d'antenne et développons une extension de l'algorithme MUSIC. Cette extension offre, pour une mise en oeuvre relativement simple, des performances sensiblement supérieures à l'algorithme classique. Les principaux avantages liés à la non circularité concernent la résolution, la variance d'estimation et le nombre de sources localisables. Ces caractéristiques sont illustrées par des simulations

Memory CD8+ T cells mediate antibacterial immunity via CCL3 activation of TNF/ROI+ phagocytes

Cytolysis, interferon γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α secretion are major effector mechanisms of memory CD8+ T cells that are believed to be required for immunological protection in vivo. By using mutants of the intracellular bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, we found that none of these effector activities is sufficient to protect against secondary infection with wild-type (WT) bacteria. We demonstrated that CCL3 derived from reactivated memory CD8+ T cells is required for efficient killing of WT bacteria. CCL3 induces a rapid TNF-α secretion by innate inflammatory mononuclear phagocytic cells (MPCs), which further promotes the production of radical oxygen intermediates (ROIs) by both MPCs and neutrophils. ROI generation is the final bactericidal mechanism involved in L. monocytogenes clearance. These results therefore uncover two levels of regulation of the antibacterial secondary protective response: (a) an antigen-dependent phase in which memory CD8+ T cells are reactivated and control the activation of the innate immune system, and (b) an antigen-independent phase in which the MPCs coordinate innate immunity and promote the bactericidal effector activities. In this context, CCL3-secreting memory CD8+ T cells are able to mediate “bystander” killing of an unrelated pathogen upon antigen-specific reactivation, a mechanism that may be important for the design of therapeutic vaccines
