    Customers as decision-makers: strategic environmental assessment in the private sector

    Despite its diversification and global spread, strategic environmental assessment (SEA) remains limited mainly to activities characterised by well-defined planning processes, typically within the public sector. This article explores the possible application of SEA within certain private-sector contexts where higher-level strategy-making itself is inherently weaker and development is often piecemeal and reactive. The possible adaptation of SEA to the preparation of a strategic document by a particular industrial concern in the UK is examined: this draws attention to the multi-actor nature of development processes within the industry. This leads to the suggestion that SEA in this setting should be thought of as a form of environmental advocacy oriented towards industrial customers, who are understood as sharing a decision-making role in infrastructure development.</p

    Pylons in the back yard: local planning and perceived risks to health

    Health fears arising from the presence of high-voltage power lines in residential areas have received recent attention in spatial planning. A study of stances taken by planning authorities in England and Wales shows their willingness to give expression to the concerns of local communities through precautionary measures, and the difficulties encountered in the face of official statements and industry opposition. These attempts to embody local feeling in patterns of development are illustrative of the increasing prevalence of a sense of risk in contemporary society. The spatial patterns of risk are also revealed, which owe much to the presence and distribution of industrial infrastructure in the landscape and to the associated contested use of land.</p

    Geophysical surveys of Bury Walls hill fort, Shropshire

    The hill fort of Bury Walls in Shropshire has been surveyed extensively by topographical and geophysical methods with the aims of recovering evidence for occupation, characterising the use of the hill fort and clarifying the chronological development of the site. Topographic surveys delineated the current extent of the fort and its massive fortifications. Resistance surveys showed several interesting features inside the fort, including extensive use of the geology to make flattened ledges in an otherwise quite uneven fort interior, a possible cross dyke, interior roads and traces of possible dwellings. Magnetic gradient surveys again showed clearly the possible cross dyke. Additional geophysical surveys attempted to define the depths of these features found in the resistance and magnetic gradient maps. This study, although not fully answering the original aims, provides a useful basis for future excavation

    Comparison of geophysical techniques for investigating an in-filled ditch at Bury Walls hill fort, Shropshire

    Five geophysical survey techniques were used to investigate the infilled section of the outer ditch at the Iron Age hill fort of Bury Walls, Shropshire. The techniques were resistance mapping and four profiling methods: resistivity sounding, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), P-wave seismic refraction and S-wave seismic refraction. The ditch was clearly visible on the resistance map and on GPR profiles, but no depth estimate was obtainable from these surveys. The most successful survey technique was S-wave seismic refraction, both for determining whether the ditch was present on a profile and for obtaining an estimate of its depth. A key factor for the success of S-wave seismic refraction profiling was that the ditch had been excavated into the sandstone bedrock

    The monoaminergic system is a bilaterian innovation

    Monoamines like serotonin, dopamine, and adrenaline/noradrenaline (epinephrine/norepinephrine) act as neuromodulators in the nervous system. They play a role in complex behaviours, cognitive functions such as learning and memory formation, as well as fundamental homeostatic processes such as sleep and feeding. However, the evolutionary origin of the genes required for monoaminergic modulation is uncertain. Using a phylogenomic approach, in this study, we show that most of the genes involved in monoamine production, modulation, and reception originated in the bilaterian stem group. This suggests that the monoaminergic system is a bilaterian novelty and that its evolution may have contributed to the Cambrian diversification

    Tectonic structure of Central-Western Attica (Greece)based on geophysical invesigations - preliminary results

    In an effort to investigate the deep geological structure in the broader area of central-western Attica, that suffered severe damage during the destructive Athens earthquake of September 7th, 1999, the Department of Geophysics-Geothermics of the Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment of Athens University, in collaboration with the Geodynamic Institute of National Observatory of Athens and the Department of Geological Sciences of Durham University, carried out a combined geophysical survey. For the first time in Attica, seismic and gravity geophysical methods were applied along profiles, in such an extensive scale. Within the framework of this investigation the following tasks were accomplished: a) Three (3) seismic lines of about 30 kilometres of total length, two (2) in the area of Thriassion plain and one (1) along the Parnitha-Krioneri-Drosia-Ekali-Dionysos axis (Attica plain) and b) 338 gravity measurements distributed along eight (8) gravity profiles, four (4) of which in Thriassion plain, three (3) in Petroupoli-Aharnes-Thrakomakedones region (Attica plain) and one (1) along Parnitha-Krioneri-Drosia-Ekali-Dionysos axis (Attica plain). Preliminary results of the geophysical investigation combined with existing geological and tectonic data are presented in this paper. Significant variation in the elevation of the alpine basement has been detected, expressed by manifestation of low and high subsurface areas which are well correlated with existing fault zones. In the area of Thriassion plain the thickness of post-alpine sediments is estimated of a few hundred meters (<500 meters) and huge thickness of several hundred meters (~800 meters) of post-alpine sediments were detected in Thrakemakedones and Krioneri areas. The relief of alpine basement is more intense in fault zones areas, such as Thriassion plain (WNW-ESE), Pathitha and Kifissos (NE-SW) as well as along the fault zone outline the Fili and Aharnes graben and is covered by postalpine formations
