    Orientation of Demagnetized Bees

    Get PDF
The orientation of honey bee dances is affected by the earth's magnetic field. Honey bees possess localized, well-oriented, stable and superparamagnetic domains of magnetite. Four lines of evidence suggest that the superparamagnetic domains of bees are more likely to be involved in magnetic field detectors than the stable domains. (1) Although the stable domains vary widely in size and number between bees, approximately 2×10^8 superparamagnetic domains are found reliably in all bees, and are restricted to there latively narrow size range of 300–350 Å. This suggests that the superparamagnetic domains are more likely to have a biological function. (2) Behavioural observations of dances in null fields are difficult to reconcile with astable-domain detector but are clearly predicted by many superparamagnetic detector models. (3) When honey bees are demagnetized, their ability to orient to the earth's field is unaffected. This suggests that the detector either utilizes the super paramagnetic domains or depends on aligned anisotropic stable domains processed without regard to magneticpolarity. (4) Bees that have only superparamagnetic domains are able nevertheless to orient to the earth's magnetic field, a phenomenon which indicates that permanent domains may not be required for detection

Managing Credit Union Capital: A Strategic Planning Tool for the New Millennium

This study provides a statistical tool for assisting credit union managers in planning capital/asset ratio strategies for optimum operating efficiency. Focus groups, personal interviews, and survey data from more than 165 randomly selected responses form the basis of our model. The survey solicited information concerning the relationship between nine independent variables and expected optimum gross and net capital/asset ratios. The most statistically significant variables were total loan/assets, real estate loans/total loans, unsecured and credit card loans, the operating expense ratio, and the delinquency ratio. Two multiple regression equations were derived from these data. They allow operating managers to enter their specific credit union data into the equations and generate target goals for optimizing their gross and net capital/asset ratios over the next two years

The Credit Union Industry in the Financial Services Marketplace of the 21st Century

The credit union industry has been consolidating for more than a quarter century, as well as broadening and diversifying its product and service offerings. In this period the operating performance and internal structure of the industry has been evolving in a number of ways. This study examines the changing chartering patterns of credit unions between state and federal. The number of credit unions, the number of members, and the assets held by credit unions in each of these categories have been growing at different rates. We examine these patterns of development and project the expected changes in structure through the year 2010

The financial services industry has been consolidating for more than two decades. This study examines the extent and affects of the deregulation movement on the credit union industry. It identifies a number of operational factors that have contributed to growth of the average size credit union in the 1990s and benefits to members that have resulted from this consolidation trend

Beringer Wine Estates Holdings, Inc. 1997

The Beringer Wine Estates Company has been expanding its market share in the premium segment of the wine industry through the decade of the 1990s. After operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of the giant Nestle Food Company for about a quarter of a century, the firm was sold in 1996 to new owners in a leveraged buyout. Students are presented with a number of corporate decisions covering management\u27s decision to go public in the late 1990s. Timing issues are critical, as is the pricing of the issue, and the impact of this decision on the firm\u27s cost of capital. Financial strategies, financial forecasting, and the valuation of a private vs. a public firm flow from the case data as well as the use of publicly-traded common stock that could be used as currency for enhancing the firm\u27s growth rate and business opportunities
