Hydrostatic pressure study of single-crystalline UNi0.5Sb2

    Get PDF
We studied single-crystals of the antiferromagnetic compound UNi0.5Sb2 (TN ~ 161 K) by means of measurements of magnetic susceptibility (chi), specific heat (Cp), and electrical resistivity (rho) at ambient pressure, and resistivity under hydrostatic pressures up to 20 kbar, in the temperature range from 1.9 to 300 K. The thermal coefficient of the electrical resistivity (drho/dT) changes drastically from positive below TN to negative above, reflecting the loss of spin-disorder scattering in the ordered phase. Two small features in the rho vs T data centered near 40 and 85 K correlate well in temperature with features in the magnetic susceptibility and are consistent with other data in the literature. These features are quite hysteretic in temperature, i.e., the difference between the warming and cooling cycles are about 10 and 6 K, respectively. The effect of pressure is to raise TN at the approximate rate of 0.76 K/kbar, while progressively suppressing the amplitude of the small features in rho vs T at lower temperatures and increasing the thermal hysteresis.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figues, 2007-mmm conferenc

Supersonic Flow past a Family of Blunt Axisymmetric Bodies

Some 100 numerical computations have been carried out for unyawed bodies of revolution with detached bow waves. The gas is assumed perfect with gamma = 5/3, 7/5, or 1. Free-stream Mach numbers are taken as 1.2, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10, and infinity. The results are summarized with emphasis on the sphere and paraboloid

What Constitutes Intermarriage for Multiracial People in Britain?

Intermarriage is of great interest to analysts because a group’s tendency to partner across ethnic boundaries is usually seen as a key indicator of the social distance between groups in a multiethnic society. Theories of intermarriage as a key indicator of integration are, however, typically premised upon the union of white and nonwhite individuals, and we know very little about what happens in the unions of multiracial people, who are the children of intermarried couples. What constitutes intermarriage for multiracial people? Do multiracial individuals think that ethnic or racial ancestries are a defining aspect of their relationships with their partners? In this article, I argue that there are no conventions for how we characterize endogamous or exogamous relationships for multiracial people. I then draw on examples of how multiracial people and their partners in Britain regard their relationships with their partners and the significance of their and their partners’ ethnic and racial backgrounds. I argue that partners’ specific ancestries do not necessarily predict the ways in which multiracial individuals regard their partners’ ethnic and racial backgrounds as constituting difference or commonality within their relationships

Regulation of lipid absorption by enterocytes can influence metabolic status in humans and contribute to obesity and related complications. The intracellular steps of chylomicron biogenesis and transport from the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) to the Golgi complex have been described, but the mechanisms for post-Golgi transport and secretion of chylomicrons have not been identified. Using a newly generated Dennd5b−/− mouse, we demonstrate an essential role for this gene in Golgi to plasma membrane transport of chylomicron secretory vesicles. In mice, loss of Dennd5b results in resistance to western diet induced obesity, changes in plasma lipids, and reduced aortic atherosclerosis. In humans, two independent exome sequencing studies reveal that a common DENND5B variant, p.(R52K), is correlated with body mass index. These studies establish an important role for DENND5B in post-Golgi chylomicron secretion and a subsequent influence on body composition and peripheral lipoprotein metabolism

Evidence and Ideology in Macroeconomics: The Case of Investment Cycles

The paper reports the principal findings of a long term research project on the description and explanation of business cycles. The research strongly confirmed the older view that business cycles have large systematic components that take the form of investment cycles. These quasi-periodic movements can be represented as low order, stochastic, dynamic processes with complex eigenvalues. Specifically, there is a fixed investment cycle of about 8 years and an inventory cycle of about 4 years. Maximum entropy spectral analysis was employed for the description of the cycles and continuous time econometrics for the explanatory models. The central explanatory mechanism is the second order accelerator, which incorporates adjustment costs both in relation to the capital stock and the rate of investment. By means of parametric resonance it was possible to show, both theoretically and empirically how cycles aggregate from the micro to the macro level. The same mathematical tool was also used to explain the international convergence of cycles. I argue that the theory of investment cycles was abandoned for ideological, not for evidential reasons. Methodological issues are also discussed

    Notes on Conformal Invisibility Devices

As a consequence of the wave nature of light, invisibility devices based on isotropic media cannot be perfect. The principal distortions of invisibility are due to reflections and time delays. Reflections can be made exponentially small for devices that are large in comparison with the wavelength of light. Time delays are unavoidable and will result in wave-front dislocations. This paper considers invisibility devices based on optical conformal mapping. The paper shows that the time delays do not depend on the directions and impact parameters of incident light rays, although the refractive-index profile of any conformal invisibility device is necessarily asymmetric. The distortions of images are thus uniform, which reduces the risk of detection. The paper also shows how the ideas of invisibility devices are connected to the transmutation of force, the stereographic projection and Escheresque tilings of the plane

Can there be a truly systematic and comprehensive theory of race?

In this ambitious new book, Mustafa Emirbayer and Matthew Desmond contend that there has never been a truly comprehensive and systematic theory of race. They go on to argue that ‘Much of our best work no longer tells us how to understand or reconstruct racial dynamics but simply gives us concrete proof of their continuing significance’ (3). To what extent does The Racial Order theoretically advance existing theorizing of race? An important contribution – and a central plank in the book – is the way in which a wide variety of cultural and social phenomena is discussed and interwoven into the analysis. The authors draw most heavily on Bourdieu, Dewey, and Durkheim, in their elaboration of the racial orde
