We introduce the notion of weak commensurabilty of arithmetic subgroups and relate it to the length equivalence and isospectrality of locally symmetric spaces. We prove many strong consequences of weak commensurabilty and derive from these many interesting results about isolength and isospectral locally symmetric spaces.Comment: 62 page

    Evolution of crystalline electric field effects, superconductivity, and heavy fermion behavior in the specific heat of Pr(Os1x_{1-x}Rux_x)4_4Sb12_{12}

Specific heat C(T)C(T) measurements were made on single crystals of the superconducting filled skutterudite series Pr(Os1x_{1-x}Rux_x)4_4Sb12_{12} down to 0.6 K. Crystalline electric field fits in the normal state produced parameters which were in agreement with previous measurements. Bulk superconductivity was observed for all values of the Ru concentration xx with transition temperatures consistent with previous experiments, confirming a minimum in TcT_{c} at x=0.6x=0.6. The C(T)C(T) data below TcT_{c} appear to be more consistent with power law behavior for x=0x=0 (PrOs4_4Sb12_{12}), and with exponential behavior for 0.05x0.20.05 \leq x \leq 0.2. An enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient γ\gamma was observed for x0.4x \leq 0.4, further supporting x0.6x \simeq 0.6 as a critical concentration where the physical properties abruptly change. Significant enhancement of ΔC/Tc\Delta C/T_{c} above the weak coupling value was only observed for x=0x=0 and x=0.05x=0.05.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Physical Review B. v2: text added and figures modifie

Was the Cosmic Web of Protogalactic Material Permeated by Lobes of Radio Galaxies During the Quasar Era?

    Get PDF
Evidence for extended active lifetimes (> 10^8 yr) for radio galaxies implies that many large radio lobes were produced during the `quasar era', 1.5 < z < 3, when the comoving density of radio sources was 2 -- 3 dex higher than the present level. However, inverse Compton losses against the intense microwave background substantially reduce the ages and numbers of sources that are detected in flux-limited surveys. The realization that the galaxy forming material in those epochs was concentrated in filaments occupying a small fraction of the total volume then leads to the conclusion that radio lobes permeated much of the volume occupied by the protogalactic material during that era. The sustained overpressure in these extended lobes is likely to have played an important role in triggering the high inferred rate of galaxy formation at z > 1.5 and in the magnetization of the cosmic network of filaments.Comment: 5 pages, 0 figures, submitted to ApJ Letters; uses emulateapj

Chemical Stabilisation of Sand Part IX: Orthophthalate type Unsaturated Polyester Resin for Inducing Fast setting Behaviour and High Strength

    Get PDF
Polymer concrete composites have been made from orthophthalate-type unsaturated polyester resin, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide as initiator, cobalt naphthenate as accelerator and desert sand as filler. Composites preferred using resin (10-25 per cent), initiator (4 per cent) and accelerator (2 per cent) with representative desert sand samples of different particle sizes (0.2-0.02 mm, 2-0.2 mm and 4-2 mm) as filler recorded unconfined compression strength ranging from 4 to 442 kg/cm/sup 2/ after curing at 50 degree centigrade in an oven for 0.5-24 h. Using coarse and fine sand samples with 10 and 15 per cent resin systems the maximum strength of 391 and 326 kg/cm/sup 2/ respectively was attained after 2 h of curing at 50 degree centigrade. The fast setting resin system with strength in this range is quite adequate for the construction of chemically stabilised surfaces, which withstand trafficability of vehicles, operation of helicopters and aircraft's requiring a maximum strength up to 275 kg/cm/sup 2/. These composites may prove useful for rapid repair of roads, helipads and runways damaged during operational activities. A mathematical model has been developed for predicting resin percentage needed for obtaining composite material of requisite strength. The observed and model predicted values have been found to show close agreement

Effectiveness of evidence based regimen for medical abortion over conventional methods

    Get PDF
Background: Medical abortion is a means of medical termination of pregnancy by drugs alone. This can be done upto 63 days using mifepristone and misoprostol tablets. For the conventional method, patient has to come to the hospital 3 times. In our study we reduced the interval between the drugs there by reducing the number of hospital visits. The objectives were to study the reduction of induction abortion interval following administration of evidence based regimen and to compare the proportion of patients developing complications in both the groups. Methods: It was a comparative study conducted at Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Govermnent MedicalCollege Kottayam, Kerala, India from May 2015 to November 2015.Results: The mean induction abortion interval in experimental group was 14.3 hours and in control group, it was 60.4 hours which was found to be statistically significant. Only 3 patients (7%) of experimental group had side effects whereas 12 patients. (17.4%) had side effects in the control group. Major side effects encountered were severe abdominal pain and severe bleeding per vaginum. Evidence based  regimen consist of administration of mifepristone 200mg and vaginal misoprostol 600µg 6 hours later for termination of pregnancy up to 63 days could reduce the induction abortion interval by 46 hours and had less side effects. Conclusions: As it reduces the induction abortion Interval and complications we feel that the evidence based regimen for Medical Termination of Pregnancy is superior to the FDA approved regimen

Scattering of polarized laser light by an atomic gas in free space: a QSDE approach

    Get PDF
We propose a model, based on a quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE), to describe the scattering of polarized laser light by an atomic gas. The gauge terms in the QSDE account for the direct scattering of the laser light into different field channels. Once the model has been set, we can rigorously derive quantum filtering equations for balanced polarimetry and homodyne detection experiments, study the statistics of output processes and investigate a strong driving, weak coupling limit.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

Understanding BL Lac objects Structural & kinematic mode changes in the BL Lac object PKS 0735+178

Context. We present evidence that parsec-scale jets in BL Lac objects may be significantly distinct in kinematics from their counterparts in quasars. We argued this previously for the BL lac sources 1803+784 and 0716+714, report here a similar pattern for another well-known BL Lac object, PKS 0735+178, whose nuclear jet is found to exhibit kinematics atypical of quasars. Aims. A detailed study of the jet components' motion reveals that the standard AGN paradigm of apparent superluminal motion does not always describe the kinematics in BL Lac objects. We study 0735+178 here to augment and improve the understanding of the peculiar motions in the jets of BL Lac objects as a class. Methods. We analyzed 15 GHz VLBA (Very Long Baseline Array) observations (2cm/MOJAVE survey) performed at 23 epochs between 1995.27 and 2008.91. Results. We found a drastic structural mode change in the VLBI jet of 0735+178, between 2000.4 and 2001.8 when its twice sharply bent trajectory turned into a linear shape. We further found that this jet had undergone a similar transition sometime between December 1981 and June 1983. A mode change, occurring in the reverse direction (between mid-1992 and mid-1995) has already been reported in the literature. These structural mode changes are found to be reflected in changed kinematical behavior of the nuclear jet, manifested as an apparent superluminal motion and stationarity of the radio knots. In addition, we found the individual mode changes to correlate in time with the maxima in the optical light curve. The last two transitions occurred before a (modest) radio flare. The behavior of this pc-scale jet appears to favor a scenario involving non-ballistic motions of the radio knots, produced by the precession of a continuous jet within the ambient medium.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (Abstract reduced for astro-ph

Industrial fisheries off Saurashtra coast based on exploratory survey during 1985-'88

    Get PDF
In Saurashtra waters, where fishery resource is currently being well exploited by private sector, exploratory survey programmes are being conducted by Government of India. The analysis, based on 4 year survey (1985-'88), with a view to provide information and to extend our knowledge about the spatial and seasonal distribution of various industrially important fishes along the Saurashtra coast. Ribbon fish and sciaenids which constituted the bulk of the catch together formed more than 60% of the total catch and catch rate were 14.7 and 14.5 kg/hr respectively. Area-wise analysis of data revealed that maximum effort was expended in 21° 69 0 and the effort was very low in 21° 70° and 23° 68° Depth wise analysis revealed that the maximum catch rate of ribbon fish and other sciaenids was obtained at 21-30 m depth. The catch rate of elasmobranch, carangid and Lactarius lactarius was maximum at 41-50 m, cat fish, pomfret and perch at 51-60 m and carangid and cephalopod at 61-70 m depth

Superconductivity mediated by a soft phonon mode: specific heat, resistivity, thermal expansion and magnetization of YB6

The superconductor YB6 has the second highest critical temperature Tc among the boride family MBn. We report measurements of the specific heat, resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and thermal expansion from 2 to 300 K, using a single crystal with Tc = 7.2 K. The superconducting gap is characteristic of medium-strong coupling. The specific heat, resistivity and expansivity curves are deconvolved to yield approximations of the phonon density of states, the spectral electron-phonon scattering function and the phonon density of states weighted by the frequency-dependent Grueneisen parameter respectively. Lattice vibrations extend to high frequencies >100 meV, but a dominant Einstein-like mode at ~8 meV, associated with the vibrations of yttrium ions in oversized boron cages, appears to provide most of the superconducting coupling and gives rise to an unusual temperature behavior of several observable quantities. A surface critical field Hc3 is also observed.Comment: 29 pages, 5 tables, 17 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
