Influence of design parameters on occurence of oil whirl
Oil whirl instability is a serious problem in oil lubricated journal bearings. The phenomenon is characterized by a subsynchronous vibration of the journal within the bush and is particularly apparent in turbogenerators, aeroengines and electric motors. A review is presented of previous papers on the subject of oil whirl, and a simple theory is described which was used to aid the design of an oil whirl test rig. Predictions of the onset of oil whirl made by the theory presented were found to agree with those of previous researchers. They showed that increasing the shaft flexibility, or the lubricant viscosity, and decreasing the bearing radial clearance tended to reduce the oil whirl onset speed thus making the system more unstable
A robust method for measuring the Hubble parameter
We obtain a robust, non-parametric, estimate of the Hubble constant from
galaxy linear diameters calibrated using HST Cepheid distances. Our method is
independent of the parametric form of the diameter function and the spatial
distribution of galaxies and is insensitive to Malmquist bias. We include
information on the galaxy rotation velocities; unlike Tully-Fisher, however, we
retain a fully non-parametric treatment. We find km/s/Mpc,

Classical Nuclear Motion in Quantum Transport
An ab initio quantum-classical mixed scheme for the time evolution of
electrode-device-electrode systems is introduced to study nuclear dynamics in
quantum transport. Two model systems are discussed to illustrate the method.
Our results provide the first example of current-induced molecular desorption
as obtained from a full time-dependent approach and suggest the use of ac
biases as a way to tailor electromigration. They also show the importance of
non-adiabatic effects for ultrafast phenomena in nanodevices.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

The normalization of sibling violence: Does gender and personal experience of violence influence perceptions of physical assault against siblings?
Despite its pervasive and detrimental nature, sibling violence (SV) remains marginalized as a harmless and inconsequential form of familial aggression. The present study investigates the extent to which perceptions of SV differ from those of other types of interpersonal violence. A total of 605 respondents (197 males, 408 females) read one of four hypothetical physical assault scenarios that varied according to perpetrator–victim relationship type (i.e., sibling vs. dating partner vs. peer vs. stranger) before completing a series of 24 attribution items. Respondents also reported on their own experiences of interpersonal violence during childhood. Exploratory factor analysis reduced 23 attribution items to three internally reliable factors reflecting perceived assault severity, victim culpability, and victim resistance ratings. A 4 × 2 MANCOVA—controlling for respondent age—revealed several significant effects. Overall, males deemed the assault less severe and the victim more culpable than did females. In addition, the sibling assault was deemed less severe compared to assault on either a dating partner or a stranger, with the victim of SV rated just as culpable as the victim of dating, peer, or stranger-perpetrated violence. Finally, respondents with more (frequent) experiences of childhood SV victimization perceived the hypothetical SV assault as being less severe, and victim more culpable, than respondents with no SV victimization. Results are discussed in the context of SV normalization. Methodological limitations and applications for current findings are also outlined
A Comparative Assessment of the Broiler:Corn Ratio and Its Impact on Broiler Processors' Profitability
Input prices for broiler production, particularly corn, are becoming increasingly volatile due to increasing competition for corn from ethanol and biofuels production suggesting volatility in poultry profits will follow indicator of profits relating feed input prices and broiler meat output prices, such as a Broiler:corn ratios. Total chicken exports, total chicken ready-to-cook production, number of eggs set, number of chicks placed, and cold storage chicken inventory are used to estimate. Utilizing a distributed lag model, seventeen years of data for three Broiler:corn ratios, broiler exports, egg set, chick placements, cold storage stocks, and ready-to-cook broiler production were utilized to estimate stock share price for four major broiler producers.Demand and Price Analysis, Livestock Production/Industries,
The origin of very wide binary systems
The majority of stars in the Galactic field and halo are part of binary or
multiple systems. A significant fraction of these systems have orbital
separations in excess of thousands of astronomical units, and systems wider
than a parsec have been identified in the Galactic halo. These binary systems
cannot have formed through the 'normal' star-formation process, nor by capture
processes in the Galactic field. We propose that these wide systems were formed
during the dissolution phase of young star clusters. We test this hypothesis
using N-body simulations of evolving star clusters and find wide binary
fractions of 1-30%, depending on initial conditions. Moreover, given that most
stars form as part of a binary system, our theory predicts that a large

Modeling Elementary Heterogeneous Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Solid-Oxide Fuel Cells
This paper presents a new computational framework for modeling chemically reacting flow in anode-supported solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Depending on materials and operating conditions, SOFC anodes afford a possibility for internal reforming or catalytic partial oxidation of hydrocarbon fuels. An important new element of the model is the capability to represent elementary heterogeneous chemical kinetics in the form of multistep reaction mechanisms. Porous-media transport in the electrodes is represented with a dusty-gas model. Charge-transfer chemistry is represented in a modified Butler-Volmer setting that is derived from elementary reactions, but assuming a single rate-limiting step. The model is discussed in terms of systems with defined flow channels and planar membrane-electrode assemblies. However, the underlying theory is independent of the particular geometry.
