A Multifaceted Device for Discreetly Acquiring Natural Behaviors of Children with Autism

    Get PDF
Autism is a multifaceted neurological disorder that affects the four fundamental areas of sensory processing, communication mechanisms, social interaction skills, and whole child/self-esteem. The underlying mechanisms and symptoms of the disorder have been shown to largely vary from patient to patient, and therefore, a durable, effective therapy is best achieved through multifaceted, multidisciplinary approaches that allow a direct assessment of each individual’s behavior, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The aim of this project was to simulate, design, manufacture, and assess a device that can help cultivate sensory, social, communication, and motor skills in autistic children while being able to extract data of the child’s behavior that could be used by the therapist. Critical components of the toy involve auditory and visual stimulation, as well as interactive mechanisms to promote development. The most important features of the toy are hidden cameras that discreetly monitor the child’s reactions in order to provide analytical feedback mechanisms, allowing parents, caregivers, or therapists to monitor and evaluate the child’s learning and therapy. The performance of the toy was examined on 17 children with autism at two specialized centers for child with developmental disorders. The results showed that the device was found satisfactory by the majority of children as assessed by their willingness to spend time accomplishing the tasks on the device, as well as by captured videos of their natural reactions throughout. Furthermore, improved performance was observed on the same population of children who were tested multiple times, indicating the potential use of the toy for therapeutic and learning purposes.Faculty Sponsor: Danial Shahmirzad

Walter Miles and His 1920 Grand Tour of European Physiology and Psychology Laboratories: A Reproduction of the Original Typescript

Walter R. Miles (1885-1978) was an American experimental psychologist very much interested in laboratory apparatus and procedures and their applications to human behavior. Early in his career, Miles received an appointment as a research scientist at the Carnegie Nutrition Laboratory in Boston, Massachusetts. When Miles arrived at the Carnegie Nutrition Laboratory in 1914, work was well underway on the physiological effects of various nutrients on the human body. Miles began studies on the effects of alcohol on physiological and psychological functioning. The First World War severed many of the relationships that the Carnegie Laboratory had with research counterparts in Europe. After the war, efforts were made to reestablish these ties. From April through August of 1920, Miles visited 57 laboratories and institutes in 9 different countries throughout Europe. A fastidious observer and note taker, Miles documented his journey in exquisite detail. At every stop, he observed, recorded, and interacted with key figures in European physiology and psychology. He gathered all this information together into a highly-detailed report of more than 300 pages. The report, part of the Walter Miles Papers available at the Archives of the History of American Psychology at the University of Akron, was never formally published. Now available in print, this title provides unique information about the workings of major centers of physiological and psychological research in early 20th century Europe. The book is introduced by C. James Goodwin, a renowned Miles\u27 scholar.https://ideaexchange.uakron.edu/uapress_publications/1137/thumbnail.jp

SleepXAI: An explainable deep learning approach for multi-class sleep stage identification

    Get PDF
Extensive research has been conducted on the automatic classification of sleep stages utilizing deep neural networks and other neurophysiological markers. However, for sleep specialists to employ models as an assistive solution, it is necessary to comprehend how the models arrive at a particular outcome, necessitating the explainability of these models. This work proposes an explainable unified CNN-CRF approach (SleepXAI) for multi-class sleep stage classification designed explicitly for univariate time-series signals using modified gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM). The proposed approach significantly increases the overall accuracy of sleep stage classification while demonstrating the explainability of the multi-class labeling of univariate EEG signals, highlighting the parts of the signals emphasized most in predicting sleep stages. We extensively evaluated our approach to the sleep-EDF dataset, and it demonstrates the highest overall accuracy of 86.8% in identifying five sleep stage classes. More importantly, we achieved the highest accuracy when classifying the crucial sleep stage N1 with the lowest number of instances, outperforming the state-of-the-art machine learning approaches by 16.3%. These results motivate us to adopt the proposed approach in clinical practice as an aid to sleep experts.publishedVersionPaid Open Acces
