    Solomonoff Induction Violates Nicod's Criterion

Nicod's criterion states that observing a black raven is evidence for the hypothesis H that all ravens are black. We show that Solomonoff induction does not satisfy Nicod's criterion: there are time steps in which observing black ravens decreases the belief in H. Moreover, while observing any computable infinite string compatible with H, the belief in H decreases infinitely often when using the unnormalized Solomonoff prior, but only finitely often when using the normalized Solomonoff prior. We argue that the fault is not with Solomonoff induction; instead we should reject Nicod's criterion.Comment: ALT 201

    Degree of explanation

    Get PDF
Partial explanations are everywhere. That is, explanations citing causes that explain some but not all of an effect are ubiquitous across science, and these in turn rely on the notion of degree of explanation. I argue that current accounts are seriously deficient. In particular, they do not incorporate adequately the way in which a cause’s explanatory importance varies with choice of explanandum. Using influential recent contrastive theories, I develop quantitative definitions that remedy this lacuna, and relate it to existing measures of degree of causation. Among other things, this reveals the precise role here of chance, as well as bearing on the relation between causal explanation and causation itself

Two Qubits in the Dirac Representation

A general two qubit system expressed in terms of the complete set of unit and fifteen traceless, Hermitian Dirac matrices, is shown to exhibit novel features of this system. The well-known physical interpretations associated with the relativistic Dirac equation involving the symmetry operations of time-reversal T, charge conjugation C, parity P, and their products are reinterpreted here by examining their action on the basic Bell states. The transformation properties of the Bell basis states under these symmetry operations also reveal that C is the only operator that does not mix the Bell states whereas all others do. In a similar fashion, expressing the various logic gates introduced in the subject of quantum computers in terms of the Dirac matrices shows for example, that the NOT gate is related to the product of time-reversal and parity operators.Comment: 11 page

Group A streptococcal vaccine delivery by immunization with a self-adjuvanting M protein-based lipid core peptide construct

Background & objectives: To develop a broad strain coverage GAS vaccine, several strategies have been investigated which included multi-epitope approaches as well as targeting the M protein conserved C-region. These approaches, however, have relied on the use of adjuvants that are toxic for human application. The development of safe and effective adjuvants for human use is a key issue in the development of effective vaccines. In this study, we investigated the lipid polylysine core peptide (LCP) system as a self-adjuvanting GAS vaccine delivery approach. Methods: An LCP-GAS construct was synthesised incorporating multiple copies of a protective peptide epitope (J8) from the conserved carboxy terminal C-repeat region of the M protein. B10.BR mice were immunized parenterally with the LCP-J8 construct, with or without conventional adjuvant, prior to the assessment of immunogenicity and the induction of serum opsonic antibodies. Results: Our data demonstrated immunogenicity of LCP-J8 when coadministered in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), or administered in the absence of conventional adjuvant. In both cases, immunization led to the induction of high-titre J8 peptide-specific serum IgG antibody responses, and the induction of heterologous opsonic antibodies that did not cross-react with human heart tissue proteins. Interpretation & conclusion: These data indicated the potential of a novel self-adjuvanting LCP vaccine delivery system incorporating a synthetic GAS M protein C-region peptide immunogen in the induction of broadly protective immune responses, and pointed to the potential application of this system in human vaccine development against infectious diseases

Matter effects in the D0-D0bar system

We discuss the impact of matter effects in the D0-D0bar system. We show that such effects could, in principle, be measured, but that they cannot be used to probe the mass difference x_D or the lifetime difference y_D. This occurs because the mixing effects and the matter effects decouple at short times. We also comment briefly on the B systems.Comment: 6 pages, RevTe

Experimental study of direct photon emission in K- --> pi- pi0 gamma decay using ISTRA+ detector

The branching ratio in the charged-pion kinetic energy region of 55 to 90 MeV for the direct photon emission in the K- --> pi- pi0 gamma decay has been measured using in-flight decays detected with the ISTRA+ setup operating in the 25 GeV/c negative secondary beam of the U-70 PS. The value Br(DE)=[0.37+-0.39(stat)+-0.10(syst)]*10^(-5) obtained from the analysis of 930 completely reconstructed events is consistent with the average value of two stopped-kaon experiments, but it differs by 2.5 standard deviations from the average value of three in-flight-kaon experiments. The result is also compared with recent theoretical predictions.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

    Dynamical derivation of Bode's law

In a planetary or satellite system, idealized as n small bodies in initially coplanar, concentric orbits around a large central body, obeying Newtonian point-particle mechanics, resonant perturbations will cause dynamical evolution of the orbital radii except under highly specific mutual relationships, here derived analytically apparently for the first time. In particular, the most stable situation is achieved (in this idealized model) only when each planetary orbit is roughly twice as far from the Sun as the preceding one, as observed empirically already by Titius (1766) and Bode (1778) and used in both the discoveries of Uranus (1781) and the Asteroid Belt (1801).
