    Residual Stress Analysis of Overspeeded Disk with Central Hole by X-ray Diffraction

    An X-ray - diffraction analysis of residual surface stresses after plastic strain was introduced in a parallel-sided 3S-O aluminum disk with a central hole by two types of centrifugal overspeed is reported. Both tangential and radial stresses were generally tensile with large local variations near the hole where surface stresses may have been partly superficial. These stresses were both tensile and compressive dependent on the distance from the disk center when mass compression was effected near the hole

    Analysis of the parallel seismic method for foundation reuse

    The focus of this thesis is the application of the Parallel Seismic method to determine the depths of unknown foundations. The method involves exciting stress waves in the pile foundations from impacts on the superstructure and recording waves radiating from the foundation in an adjacent borehole or seismic cone penetrometer (SCPT) sounding at different depths. The primary objective of this thesis is to determine the most effective procedures for collecting and analyzing Parallel Seismic data under real world conditions. The specific topics covered in this thesis include: (1) detectability of P-wave and S-wave arrivals under different field and measurement conditions, (2) comparisons of wave recordings using a 3-component borehole sensor with readings obtained using the Missouri Department of Transportation's (MoDOT's) SCPT sensor which lacks a vertical-oriented component, (3) comparing the accuracy of depth estimates using three data interpretation methods, and (4) using simulated wave arrival data to study the effects of battered piles and pile taper on the accuracy of Parallel Seismic measurements. Data were collected from two bridge sites in Southeast Missouri (Route WW and Route U) for four piles at each site using two boreholes and two SCPT soundings at each site. Unfortunately, the depth of penetration of the boreholes and SCPT was not sufficient at one of the sites (Route WW) so most of the observations are from data collected at the Route U site. The interpretation methods applied to the data were a simple intersection method performed by eye, the intersection method with a depth correction applied, and a curve fitting method using a model of wave arrivals.by Levi James GoodIncludes bibliographical reference

    Residential Broadband Access for Students at a Tennessee Community College

    The purpose of this study was to determine the availability of internet access for students attending a community college in east Tennessee during the spring semester 2010. In particular, it is unknown to what degree broadband internet access is available in the counties that the college considers its service area. The research was conducted during the spring semester 2010 including the months February, March, and April of 2010. Data were gathered by surveying currently enrolled students of the college. Twelve percent of the population responded to the study. The survey instrument covered the areas of demographics, internet connection type from home, and usage of that internet service for coursework. The results of the data analysis gave insight into what degree‐seeking students of the college had access to highspeed internet from their homes. For example, over 20% of the respondents did not have an internet connection at all or have only dial‐up available at their home. Thirty percent were dissatisfied with their current high‐speed internet service. Approximately 64% thought high‐speed internet was very important in completing coursework. The study provided an increase in the body of knowledge on internet access for students and increased the body of knowledge for internet availability in the surrounding counties of the institution

    Patterns of local and nonlocal water resource use across the western U.S. determined via stable isotope intercomparisons

    pre-printIn the western U.S., the mismatch between public water demands and natural water availability necessitates large interbasin transfers of water as well as groundwater mining of fossil aquifers. Here we identify probable situations of nonlocal water use in both space and time based on isotopic comparisons between tap waters and potential water resources within hydrologic basins. Our approach, which considers evaporative enrichment of heavy isotopes during storage and distribution, is used to determine the likeli-hood of local origin for 612 tap water samples collected from across the western U.S. We find that 64% of samples are isotopically distinct from precipitation falling within the local hydrologic basin, a proxy for groundwater with modern recharge, and 31% of samples are isotopically distinct from estimated surface water found within the local basin. Those samples inconsistent with local water sources, which we suggest are likely derived from water imported from other basins or extracted from fossil aquifers, are primarily clus- tered in southern California, the San Francisco Bay area, and central Arizona. Our isotope-based estimates of nonlocal water use are correlated with both hydrogeomorphic and socioeconomic properties of basins, suggesting that these factors exert a predictable influence on the likelihood that nonlocal waters are used to supply tap water. We use these basin properties to develop a regional model of nonlocal water resource use that predicts (r2=0.64) isotopically inferred patterns and allows assessment of total interbasin transfer and/or fossil aquifer extraction volumes across the western U.S

    Response to Teladorsagia circumcincta infection in Scottish Blackface lambs with divergent phenotypes for nematode resistance

    peer-reviewedThe objective of this study was to identify Scottish Blackface lambs that were at the extremes of the spectrum of resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes and characterise their response to an experimental nematode challenge. Lambs (n = 90) were monitored for faecal egg count (FEC) (2 samples from each of 2 independent natural infections). The most resistant (n = 10) and susceptible (n = 10) individuals were selected and challenged with 30,000 Teladorsagia circumcincta larvae (L3) at 9 months of age. Response to infection was monitored by measuring FEC, plasma pepsinogen, serum antibodies against nematode larval antigens and haematology profile, until necropsy at 71 days post infection. Worm burden, worm fecundity and the level of anti-nematode antibodies in abomasal mucosa were determined at necropsy. FEC was consistently higher in susceptible animals (P < 0.05), validating the selection method. Worm fecundity was significantly reduced in resistant animals (P = 0.03). There was also a significant correlation (r = 0.88; P < 0.001) between the number of adult worms and FEC at slaughter. There was no effect of phenotype (resistance/susceptibility) on plasma pepsinogen or on haematology profile. Phenotype had a significant effect on the level of anti-nematode IgA antibodies in serum (P < 0.01), reflecting a higher peak in resistant animals at day 7 post infection. It is concluded that significant variation in the response to gastrointestinal nematode challenge exists within the Scottish Blackface population with resistant animals displaying significantly lower FEC, lower worm fecundity and higher concentration of anti-nematode IgA antibodies in serum.Kathryn McRae was supported by a Teagasc Walsh fellowship and the Allan and Grace Kay Overseas Scholarship

    Shared Governance: A Comparison of Perceptions and Implementation between American and Chinese Higher Education Institutions

    The purpose of this study was to assess the status of institutional stakeholders’ perceptions and application of shared governance on an American higher education campus and a counterpart in China and determine if there were differences among the groups of stakeholders both within and between the institutions. Significant differences were found among the four categories of participants at the Chinese institution. For the General Acceptance dimension of the Perceptions of Shared Governance Inventory (PSGI) the Chinese staff members reported significantly higher scores than all the other three categories. For the Implementation dimension, staff members and the students scored significantly higher than the administrators and the faculty members. For the two dimensions of the Application of Shared Governance Inventory (ASGI), administrators reported significantly higher scores than the other categories. At the participating American university, a significant difference was found between the students and the administrators in the General Acceptance dimension. Comparisons between the American institution and the Chinese institution found that the Chinese faculty members scored significantly higher than Americans in the General Acceptance dimension, but the American faculty members scored significantly higher in both the General Acceptance and the Implementation dimensions. Chinese staff members and the Chinese students scored significantly higher than Americans in both the General Acceptance and the Implementation dimensions, but the American staff members and the American students scored significantly higher in both the General Acceptance and the Implementation dimensions. Also, years of service plays a significant role in two Chinese groups
