Time perception, phonological skills and executive function in children with dyslexia and/or ADHD symptoms

Background:  Deficits in time perception (the ability to judge the duration of time intervals) have been found in children with both attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia. This paper investigates time perception, phonological skills and executive functions in children with dyslexia and/or ADHD symptoms (AS). Method:  Children with dyslexia-only (n = 17), AS-only (n = 17), comorbid dyslexia+AS (n = 25), and typically developing controls (n = 42), matched for age and non-verbal ability, were assessed on measures of phonological skills, executive function and time perception (duration discrimination and time reproduction). Results:  Children with dyslexia were impaired on measures of phonological skill and duration discrimination compared to children without dyslexia (though problems on duration discrimination appeared to be attributable to mild symptoms of inattention in this group). In contrast, children with AS exhibited impairments on measures of both time perception and executive function compared to children without AS. Children with dyslexia+AS showed an additive combination of the deficits associated with dyslexia-only and AS-only. Conclusions:  Dyslexia and AS appear to be associated with distinct patterns of cognitive deficit, which are present in combination in children with dyslexia+AS.</p

As a social, industrial, and political hub of the American colonies, New England’s need for centers providing structured medicine led to the creation of Albany Medical College in1839, one of the earliest such institutions in the young nation.1 Rapid progress in nearly every other realm of life required medical advancements as well, prompting subspecialization and the development of neurosurgery in the region

Maintaining the health and safety of the crews of spacecraft remain the highest priorities. Health monitoring requires at least two overlapping activities: (1) frequent or continuous monitoring of bodily functions to determine normalcy or deviation from normalcy, and (2) specific diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Thus, with a broad mandate and limited resources, the spacecraft must provide the diagnostic capabilities for quickly and accurately diagnosing a wide range of diseases. Optical devices, though still in the early developmental stages, diagnose diseases by analyzing and quantitating the spectra of metabolites and other substances non-invasively and without using chemical reagents. Once commercially available, optical devices will replace many clinical tests that use chemical reagents for diagnostics

Assessment and monitoring of the human dimensions within the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program: final report of the Human Dimensions Expert Group

[Extract] The National Environmental Science Programme (NESP) Project 3.2.2 and funds provided through the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program (RIMReP) have provided a methodology for assessing and monitoring the Great Barrier Reef (Reef)’s human dimensions as a key mechanism to support governance and management of the World Heritage Area. The work has used a conceptual framework to identify appropriate sets of indicators for characterising the desired state of the Reef’s human dimensions at the whole-of-Reef and regional scales. Using this framework, 25 indicator attributes that describe people’s relationship with the Reef were grouped into five key attribute clusters which align with the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan (Reef 2050 Plan) Outcomes. These are: (i) human aspirations, capacities and stewardship associated with the Reef; (ii) community vitality related to Great Barrier Reef outcomes; (iii) economic values related to Great Barrier Reef outcomes; (iv) culture and heritage related to the Reef; and (v) the health of governance systems affecting Reef outcomes. This work was undertaken with collaboration and input from the Reef-wide (RIMReP) Human Dimensions Expert Group and six Regional Discussion Panels in the Reef catchment. Populating this framework to determine the state of the human dimensions associated with the Reef requires a rich evidence base. As a result of this work, alignment of the human dimensions framework with Reef 2050 Plan targets, objectives and outcomes has revealed several significant gaps for monitoring implementation of the Reef 2050 Plan.An accessible copy of this report is not yet available from this repository, please contact [email protected] for more information

Mean value coordinates–based caricature and expression synthesis

We present a novel method for caricature synthesis based on mean value coordinates (MVC). Our method can be applied to any single frontal face image to learn a specified caricature face pair for frontal and 3D caricature synthesis. This technique only requires one or a small number of exemplar pairs and a natural frontal face image training set, while the system can transfer the style of the exemplar pair across individuals. Further exaggeration can be fulfilled in a controllable way. Our method is further applied to facial expression transfer, interpolation, and exaggeration, which are applications of expression editing. Additionally, we have extended our approach to 3D caricature synthesis based on the 3D version of MVC. With experiments we demonstrate that the transferred expressions are credible and the resulting caricatures can be characterized and recognized

Pressure shift of the superconducting T_c of LiFeAs

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the superconductivity in LiFeAs is investigated up to 1.8 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature, T_c, decreases linearly with pressure at a rate of 1.5 K/GPa. The negative pressure coefficient of T_c and the high ambient pressure T_c indicate that LiFeAs is the high-pressure analogue of the isoelectronic SrFe_2As_2 and BaFe_2As_2.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure
